FWIW it still sounds like Lewis lives in Sydney and the age gap between the two is fairly small so I don't think it's his kid. Not saying it's definitely not but haven't heard anything about him as a future F/S.

so i thought i would start my thread for 2024 based on u16's championships, state rep games and u18's leagues and who i think has the ability to perform at the state rep levels and potentially AFL level, i will name a top 90 who i am keen to see more of next year and im sure i will find another dozen or so next year in the early rounds or through-out the year.

An excellent list Davo. Much appreciated. 😍

Personally I don’t see a standout player for the 2024’s draft. Finn O’S is a neat player with upside but IMO not on the level of the super 6 from 2023. Smille has caught my eye but at his relative size, he should stand out.

Christian Moraes has the awareness and skill that could make him an excellent AFL player... and I think will come into top 5 calculations… but the AFL will not let him, as a Hawks NGA player, be available to us.

It is already past time to even out the draft. The Suns are now stacked with talent and jettisoning high quality players for chump change. They have their premiership coach and so it is time to set the boat free to see if it can float. That team is now the Rolls Royce of the comp. They have everything needed to win a premiership.

It is time to bring in pick purchasing.

Minimise the F/S or NGA or Academy matching ability per round to 1 Player. No more 20% discounts. No more Ben McKay’s being worth pick 3 Compo. That is dumb and everyone with an ounce of sense that sees Ben as the highest player in the comp would agree: the AFL’s system has made this absurdity. (Aside : No dispersions on Ben… good on him).

The location of the players that make up the All Australian U16 team is not just a wake up call… it is a barking mad yell from 14 other teams saying, F@rking Fix this now or our fans will become disillusioned with the draft process and the AFL as a fair and reasonable competition will become something not worth caring about.

Be clear, everyone on BigFooty will care. It is what we do. But while the AFL grow their base towards the North with unfair policies, kids in the heartland will turn to other sports.

The time for parity is now.

By parity, you mean return of the VFL.

That u16 AA team with 6 Suns in it was flawed imo, I saw all of division 1 and about half of the division 2 games, the difference in quality of teams between Vic M, Vic C, WA and SA and division 2 teams of Bris, GCS, GWS, Syd, Tas, NT were very obvious, I would say that the 2 qld teams especially Brisbane who won div 2, looked like they could compete with division 1 teams, which confirms what we've seen of late, the growth of AFL within Qld that has been happening and is continuing to provide dividends to the Qld teams, I think there was some favouritism shown to div 2 after the Allies won the u18s champs and so they over represented div 2 teams In the AA team imo, I have made what I think is a more accurate AA team from the u16s in the 3rd post of this thread.

We will miss out on Christian Moraes.

The AFL gave up on equalisation years ago, it's all about TV Deals, growing new audiences, keeping new expansions growing at any cost for TV Deals, I mean they spent 30 years propping up Sydney Swans before they could turn a profit, expect the same for new expansions, the Academy is 1 way they can guarantee that players stay at these clubs, we all saw the mass exodus at Brisbane 5-10 years ago, GCS struggle to retain anyone of value and they also have the history of worst trades within the AFL that doesn't help their cause and GWS continually cycle in draft picks with the amount that leave that club, so these teams do need help keeping talent, success can do this and having Academies will help with their success, as well as locals more likely having a desire to stay, is it optimal? No, but it is what it is, now if the TV Deals no longer gave such incentives for a NSW/QLD audience as it does now, I would think the AFL would change their strategy somewhat, but they need it to work for the TV Deals which are the AFLs main source of income I believe?

Pick 1 candidates

Finn O'Sullivan - has a good height and build, seems to have good endurance and a good kick, likes to kick more than handball, has kicked some good goals on an angle, strong overhead for a mid, was a standout in a weak Vic Country team at the u16s champs, looks very likely to be an AFL level mid

Leonardo Lombard - quick, good disposal, already looks like an AFL player, very sharp movement and decision making, depending on improvement or continued top form he is a chance to push for a high pick.

Tyler Welsh - unfortunately his height might hold him back, he is an awkward 191cm, his game in general is strong like a Darcy Fogarty, but do Adelaide need 2 Darcy Fogartys? Strong, quick and clever Key Forward who dominated at the u16s champs and dominated in the u18s champs as an underager against bigger bodies, he is a quality footballer, it just depends on how you measure his potential height and what role he could play as to his value overall.

Levi Ashcroft - he has impressed in 2 roles, as a small forward with deadly accuracy and an ability to find space to mark, then his 2nd role as an accumulator midfielder where he averages a lot of disposals, he won a heap of footy for Vic Metro and Sandy, he has been very consistent over the last year and a half and with his dual roles has added to his value imo, which has him likely top 5 from my pov.

Sid Draper - I have this guy rated highly for his accumulation and running power through the midfield, im concerned by his disposal a little, there's a couple of question marks on his all round game, but I do think he will go highly on what I have seen so far.

Jagga Smith - highly agile, good kick at goal, loves a handball and a 1-2, accumulator mid, good work rate, had a good season for Oakleigh and had a couple of good games for Vic Metro, he seems to be a leader of sorts, wanting things his way, reminds me of Tom Mitchell's type of personality when he was playing at the Hawks.

Josh Smillie - 194cm midfielder who also plays as a counter attacking defender, wins a lot of poss, clever disposal, small concerns on his athletic ability, but if he has good combine results, he should go high depending on form, has dominated at the u16s champs and was strong as an underager in the u18s champs

Joe Harrison - Syd A player, as a midfielder he seems very strong, I've only seen a small sample, so I need more viewings to be confident, but he looks to be a very good candidate for a high position in the draft, strong physically, good in and under player and contested player, also has good run in his legs, a player that I want to see more of.

Tend to agree the top 6 or 7 are basically as good as each other with O'Sullivan and Draper being my early pick 1 faves. Ashcroft in an open draft would be interesting as he is probably going to be the best player as he's meant to be slightly better than Will or at least pretty much the same player and Will was on track to win the rising star before the ACL.

Also mids from about 10 to 30 are all very even looks a quality midfielders draft. Lots of key defenders too.

I'm unaware of him, so I looked him up and he played 2 games in the CTL last year and is 194cm, if he catches my eye, then I will mention him, if not I probably won't?
He's a chance Davo hopefully he makes it great name for word play old Bucky Bucktooth Bucknaked Joe Buck

so i thought i would start my thread for 2024 based on u16's championships, state rep games and u18's leagues and who i think has the ability to perform at the state rep levels and potentially AFL level, i will name a top 90 who i am keen to see more of next year and im sure i will find another dozen or so next year in the early rounds or through-out the year.

Hay Davo. As far as we know, Benny Barrett is a port NGA prospect. He’s currently training with the team.

Finn O'Sullivan is the early favourite for pick 1 from my PoV, he is going to Xavier College in Melbourne so will probably play for Oakleigh or Sandringham in the NAB League, we'll see how this ages? :p
This was a week before he was named MVP in the u16s championships, in a terrible Vic Country team, he should go in the first couple of picks and starts as pick 1 favourite heading into next year.

my top 30 from the division 1 sides (u16's 2024 draft)

VM - Josh Smillie, Jagga Smith, Levi Ashcroft, Lucas McInerney, Luke Wilson, Ty Kitchell, Zak Johnson, Isaac Kako (8)
VC - Finn O'Sullivan, Sam Lalor, Xavier Lindsay, Xavier Ivisic, Tobie Travaglia (5)
WA - Otis Harvey, Deian Roberts, Chayse Martinson, Hugh Boxshall, Malakai Champion, Harry Jones (6)
SA - Lucas Camporeale, Phoenix Hargrave, Benny Barrett, Sid Draper, Tyler Welsh, Jacob Newton, Ned Atkinson, Louie Montgomery (8)

underager - Dyson Sharp(SA)
overagers - Will McCabe(SA), Xavier Walsh(WA)

This was a top 30 I made at the time, 18 months ago, u16s championships top 30, not much has changed imo

I'm as hard for Sharp as anyone but it's def a close call with Greeves. Sharp I think has more strength and power and big game sense but Greeves is probably slightly quicker and cleaner overall

You were quick to sing the praises of Sharp last year.

There's surely a 2026 prospect you like the most of all from SA.

I've been big on him since he was barely 14 and that doesn't change. He'll be one of the best SA prospects in the last 20 years at least. I know of other ppl with even bigger calls on him (as in best ever but I'll stop well short of there)

2026 I've mentioned but Sharpy's teamate Dougy Cochrane goes alright. He's as versatile as you get, I think he's the first player I've seen play almost every position on the ground over the course of a season, bar maybe full back. Skinny as a rake but boy he can play.

Another year with influential academy and father/son selections Davo-27 ?

15/60 you named in the OP are linked with clubs (obviously not all will go, Essendon have 2 NGA linked inside 40 for example)

6/15 are academy or father/son linked players.. when will it end ??11?!?11?!
I think this has been the norm for awhile now and will likely continue, unless an academy and fs overhaul happens.

When the AFL cans father sons and NGA academies.

It's either a fully uncompromised draft, or teams live with the compromised nature of the draft for the "good of the game".

I expect we'll see quite a few Lions and GC academy player end up at other clubs from the 2025 draft, as both clubs are likely to make finals and will be unable to match on all their academy kids.

AFL can cancel father/son, NGA and Academies in 2024 or 2025 and be done with it. Put a 5 year freeze for all categories and see what happens in the open draft.

We'll end up with Levi Ashcroft playing for North Melbourne, a Hodge playing for Fremantle or say a Logan Daniher (Essendon father son) playing for West Coast etc.

Father/son should absolutely stay. It's the academy system that needs amendment.

Why should it stay? What's the benefit in letting one club get permanent rights to a family line?

For example - Hodge has 4 boys. It's BS Hawks have first dibs on all 4 of them without needing to put any work on any of them. Don't give me the "oh its the romance and sentiment of playing for father's club" crap as usual. Father did it as a job, he was good at it so he got to do it for 100+ games for multiple years. No other job field out there is giving a headstart or preferential selection for a son because the father was an excellent multi-year employee in their company.

It's not an even mechanism for all club to benefit so it needs to go. If Academy and NGA are going, Father Son should absolutely go. Look at the history of where it came from, it was a made up rule to get Ron Barrasi to Melbourne and then it's become a fixture now where some clubs are getting solid returns while others haven't seen anything for years.

Lions got Ashcroft and Fletcher now and in spite of that, I'd gladly vote for that rule to be abolished.

Why shouldn't they? He was a Hawthorn great.

Father/son is a long standing rule that now benefits 16 clubs. Academies benefit 4 clubs.

The only clubs that should have academy access are GWS and Gold Coast. And on a lesser scale Fremantle.

It's an absolute rort that Brisbane and Sydney receive the best of both worlds.

So in effect you're saying that the past players of some clubs are as sterile as the minds that recruited them.
