2026 early names

Matthew Owen - Bris A - 178cm (def/mid)
Doug Cochrane - Central Dist - 194cm (KPF) (his dad didnt play enough to be FS)
Arki Butler - Sandringham - 180cm (mid/forw) (skill and composure)
Max Downes - Northern - 180cm (mid)
Cody Walker - Bendigo (Carl FS) - 185cm (mid) (early pick 1 favourite)
Harry Van Hattum - Northern - 202cm (ruck) (one of the best young rucks in a few years, could be good enough to go top 10 as a ruck which is rare)

i thought i would try and guess at an early first round, this is early in the process and it varies on the amount of footy i have seen each player play, its more of a guide than a formal list, first rounds of 18 picks usually balloon out to 25 give or take a few picks, so i'll do a first round of 30 in this format and highlight academy/fs players.

2025 AFL Draft Guesstimate - Pre-season

pick 1 - Dyson Sharp - he has impressed since he played u16 champs as an underager, his step up to the SANFL has also been impressive, again as an underager and has been AFL ready since he was 15, he is a bit advanced physically, is the favourite to go pick 1 at this early stage

pick 2 - Riley Onley - another who stood out in last years u18s champs, this time for VC, inside mid that is very tall and won a fair few clearances, was important in getting drive out of the centre for VC, he was also a standout in the u16s a year earlier and has grown to be 194cm (some reports 196cm?) mid

pick 3 - Fred Rodriguez - a player that stood out in last years u18s champs for WA, physically developed, seems like he has a good endurance, good height and aerial ability and seems clean by hand and foot

pick 4 - Oliver Greeves - a player that came on the radar for me in the u16s trials as a KPF, he looked fantastic in the forward line, then switched up and played midfield rivalling Sharp as one of the best at the u16s that year playing midfield now, talented prospect that at times outshone Smillie at Eastern in 2024

pick 5 - Zeke Uwland - Gold Coast Academy Player, i liked the look of him a couple years ago, he was 173cm and very skillful half back, he is 178cm now i believe and stepping up to the midfield and is getting some recent media attention

pick 6 - Cody Curtin - tall defender, a bit more of a KPP than his brother who was KPD then turned into a tall midfielder in his draft year, 197cm and a strong frame with good aerial ability like his brother, he showed promise at the u18s champs and put his name up for a good position in this years draft

pick 7 - Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier - midfielder from SA, who was a standout in the u16s champs as well as averaging 26 disposals in 17 games at sanfl u18s level and debuting with 26 touches at reserves level this year.

pick 8 - Blake Kelly - midfielder who played forward for WA in the u18s champs and played well, even when out of his preferred position in the midfield

pick 9 - Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves - another midfielder to play forward in the u18s champs and play well out of position

pick 10 - Daniel Annable - Brisbane Academy Player, looks to have improved his midfield work, has always been an accumulator even back to his u16s but is adding more grunt and skill to his game

pick 11 - Cooper Duff-Tytler - at 199cm he has impressed at the u16s champs as a tall defender and at Calder Cannons in the ruck this season, a flexible tall, with a lot of potential

pick 12 - Archie Ludowyke - started 2024 on fire and i got a bit caught up in the excitement, but as the season went on his form fizzled out and it ended a bit ordinary, fitness or injury could be an explaination? not sure, but his jump and aerial marking ability gives him value and he is 1 of the better KPF options for this year

pick 13 - Willem Duursma - even though the media have been big on him, i have not liked his poor kicking from defence, he is tall and plays wing well and can have some good double efforts, good athletic build, just needs to tidy up te turnovers and i would be higher on him

pick 14 - Sam Cumming - was OK at the u16s, but had a fantastic futures game last season which shows improvement

pick 15 - Lachlan Dovaston - he was a quality player at the u16s and at Eastern Ranges last year, surprised he didnt get more of a chance for VM only trialling i think? he is a bit short, but highly talented imo

pick 16 - Thomas McGuane - another highly talented player that didnt play VM footy last season, Coll FS, good speed, good decision making, dangerous around goal, talented player who should go first round if he keeps performing like he has

pick 17 - Noah Chamberlain - Sydney Academy Player, another player to have performed very well at u18s level this season

pick 18 - Josh Lindsay - a player that has shown improvement from u16s to this year

pick 19 - Louis Emmett - 198cm ruck, a bit short for a ruck, but is highly talented and could play KPP if he doesnt grow another inch? or 2, should go first round, is too talented to not

pick 20 - Sam Swadling - looks to have quality movement and skill, decision making seems good, not sure on athletic profile and need to see more of, but i like the look of him from a couple games

pick 21 - Basil Hart - clever goal sneak from WA, was the only under ager included in the AFL Academy team, dangerous around goals, was clean and quick at the u16s, need to see more of him

pick 22 - Sam Grlj - noticed him in the trials for u16s, he got injured and didnt play u16s, played for Oakleigh this year and looked good

pick 23 - Jack Dalton - high accumulator, might go early because of his accumulation, needs to fix a few areas like decision making ect to improve imo

pick 24 - Lachlan Carmichael - Sydney Academy, have 2 quality players, i havnt seen enough of King to add him in this list, but i know Chamberlain and Carmichael are quality

pick 25 - Marcus Cassidy - he was an important part in WA being successful in the u16s, a real leader and quality player with good aerial ability, i think he is missing from the WA Squad, so not sure if he gets a shot at the champs this year? i like him as a prospect and will talk about him until its clear he is snubbed or not.

pick 26 - Noah Roberts-Thomson - played well at the u16s champs for SA, bit of an injury interrupted year in 2024, so 2025 will be important for him

pick 27 - Toby Whan - played well at the u16s champs, good run and carry from half back and good kick at goal when given the chance to run into 50, improved a little this year to play u18s

pick 28 - Thomas Burton - was OK at the u16s champs, but came out and performed well for Western Jets to sneak into the top 30 contention

pick 29 - Beau Addinsall - Gold Coast Academy, improving midfielder, wasnt sure on him at the u16s champs, but since then has improved

pick 30 - Dylan Patterson - Gold Coast Academy, was high on him after the u16s, but didnt have the improvement im looking for in 2024, still just in the top 30

Harry Morphet(Geelong) looked top 30 quality before his injury (broken leg at the u16s champs), came back for the last couple games in 2024, so im curious if he still has the passion to make the AFL.

Wes Walley is a media's wet dream.

He'd just about heard all of the lame quips pertaining to his name.

Seems like we have a Tauru-Oliver-Leake-Ginbey bolter every time.

I wonder who it'll be and where will it come from.

If any of the 2025 names are reading this, good luck, have fun and put yourselves on clubs radars.
It's a pretty crowded area.

Contractually, this'll be the first draft where all of the senior listed draftees are at least at the mercy of the Tassie Devils.

1-20: 2026-28.
21-end: 2026-27.

Oh, and 2025 will see the first trade for a future pick 2 years in advance so 2 years of "death riding" will commence.

hey Davo-27 thanks again for another great year of insights. Quick one for hawks we really need an elite forward half medium size to replace Gunston or Breust. Got any early names to look out for? Cheers
maybe Kobe Williams our father son prospect develops?, its not a deep draft for sml/med forwards, maybe Jamie Gilchrist?, then theres 2 WCE NGA in Wes Walley and Koby Evans or a Frem NGA in Basil Hart, but they are unlikely to be available, maybe a Joe Berry pops up out of nowhere for 2025?

Mentioned him a few times but Husein El-Achkar will end up being drafted. Being 171cm (as of 2024) may be a hindrance but he has a fair bit of Shai Bolton about him.

Watch this space from the Essendon NGA prospect

i looked for him in the Sandy final and El-Achkar had some traits, but im not sold on him yet, i need to see more, i thought Carled El-Khodr from Calder showed something and had pace and skill, but i need to see more of them and they didnt stand out in other games i saw of Calder that they played in, in my lists they are either guys who stood out at u16s Champs or had a good group of games in 2024 that i saw, so theres usually a handful i miss because i dont see every game OR over rate because they fall off after the u16s, a good example was Phoenix Hargraves who looked top tier at the u16s in a strong SA u16s team and was so much more influential in the games, then he put on a bunch of muscle and became less agile and quick, puberty made him stronger but at the cost of athleticism, which might have cost him a shot at AFL...

Hes a little easy to miss, kicked 19 goals from 15 games and still averaged 15 touches and 3 tackles so certainly something o work with.

As I mentioned, his (very) small stature probably works against him. Hes a little less aerial than Shai Bolton but that same explosive, dynamic mid/fwd ability. Did kick 5 (and had 21) versus Western in round 19. Do yourself a favour and wait for noobermensch to put that video out. Kid looks a real likely chance.

I really like the Calder group. Obviously led by Cooper Duff-Tytler, they did also blood a few underagers. Led by Hamish Bird, Will Hannegraf, I believe Cooper Herbert will be invited back as an overager. I think a few of the Essendon NGA cohort should be involved in the Calder squad.

Adam Sweid is a medium fwd, kicked 19 goals from 8 games returning from an ACL in 2023. Tristan Leeds another who was on the cusp but injury curtailed his 2024.

Going to be a fun watch I think

I think the entire 2025 cohort is miles better than 2024. Better still every state has gold.

Really sounds like the Essendon NGA is really starting to work well. Are they doing anything extra special or are they just "lucky" with a good zone or run of kids?

Sam Grij Oakleigh mid/wing would be in the list if he played in the champs.

Vic Metro won with WA coming runners up, with SA and Vic Country competitive
Brisbane dominated div 2 with GCS A coming runners up then the other 4 teams(GWS, Tas, Syd and NT)

so this is a list i compiled after the u16s championships for this years draft pool, im sure there will be movement in terms of maturity and development under the pressure of their draft year, but its information from nearly 1 1/2 years ago.....

I wanted to do an AA Team for the u16s champs in 2023

B: Jadd Hill (WA), Cooper Duff-Tytler (VM), Jim Kelly (SA)
HB: Zeke Uwland (GCS), Riley Onley (VC), Xavier Bamert (VM)
C: Lachlan Dovaston (VM), Blake Kelly (WA), Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier (SA)
HF: Jack Harrison (Bris), Louis Emmett (VM), Giuseppe Posterino (VC)
F: Basil Hart (WA), Archie Ludowyke (VM), Dylan Patterson (GCS)
R: Kayle Gerryn (WA), Dyson Sharp (SA), Oliver Greeves (VM)

INT: Tairon Ah-Mu (VC), Jack Dalton (VM), Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (VC), Noah Roberts-Thompson (SA)
Marcus Cassidy (WA), Raphael Geesu (Bris), Charlie Hewitt (Bris - 2024 draft), Jobe Scapin (VC), Toby Whan (WA).

VM - 7 (winners div 1)
WA - 6 (runners up div 1)
SA - 4
VC - 5
Bris - 3 (winners div 2)
GCS - 2 (runners up div 2)
Here is the All Australian Team i made, because i didnt like that the media/afl had too many div 2 players in the AA team lol, which is where i added Duff-Tytler as the best KPD at the time, now he has moved into the ruck, again this was made 1 1/2 years ago so things will change a little.

As a Richmond supporter

These 2 boys would be a dream with the 2 picks we have in the 1st round come draft time

pick 12 - Archie Ludowyke - started 2024 on fire and i got a bit caught up in the excitement, but as the season went on his form fizzled out and it ended a bit ordinary, fitness or injury could be an explaination? not sure, but his jump and aerial marking ability gives him value and he is 1 of the better KPF options for this year

pick 13 - Willem Duursma - even though the media have been big on him, i have not liked his poor kicking from defence, he is tall and plays wing well and can have some good double efforts, good athletic build, just needs to tidy up te turnovers and i would be higher on him

pick 14 - Sam Cumming - was OK at the u16s, but had a fantastic futures game last season which shows improvement

pick 15 - Lachlan Dovaston - he was a quality player at the u16s and at Eastern Ranges last year, surprised he didnt get more of a chance for VM only trialling i think? he is a bit short, but highly talented imo

pick 16 - Thomas McGuane - another highly talented player that didnt play VM footy last season, Coll FS, good speed, good decision making, dangerous around goal, talented player who should go first round if he keeps performing like he has

pick 17 - Noah Chamberlain - Sydney Academy Player, another player to have performed very well at u18s level this season

pick 18 - Josh Lindsay - a player that has shown improvement from u16s to this year

pick 19 - Louis Emmett - 198cm ruck, a bit short for a ruck, but is highly talented and could play KPP if he doesnt grow another inch? or 2, should go first round, is too talented to not

pick 20 - Sam Swadling - looks to have quality movement and skill, decision making seems good, not sure on athletic profile and need to see more of, but i like the look of him from a couple games

pick 21 - Basil Hart - clever goal sneak from WA, was the only under ager included in the AFL Academy team, dangerous around goals, was clean and quick at the u16s, need to see more of him

pick 22 - Sam Grlj - noticed him in the trials for u16s, he got injured and didnt play u16s, played for Oakleigh this year and looked good

pick 23 - Jack Dalton - high accumulator, might go early because of his accumulation, needs to fix a few areas like decision making ect to improve imo

pick 24 - Lachlan Carmichael - Sydney Academy, have 2 quality players, i havnt seen enough of King to add him in this list, but i know Chamberlain and Carmichael are quality

pick 25 - Marcus Cassidy - he was an important part in WA being successful in the u16s, a real leader and quality player with good aerial ability, i think he is missing from the WA Squad, so not sure if he gets a shot at the champs this year? i like him as a prospect and will talk about him until its clear he is snubbed or not.

pick 26 - Noah Roberts-Thomson - played well at the u16s champs for SA, bit of an injury interrupted year in 2024, so 2025 will be important for him

pick 27 - Toby Whan - played well at the u16s champs, good run and carry from half back and good kick at goal when given the chance to run into 50, improved a little this year to play u18s

pick 28 - Thomas Burton - was OK at the u16s champs, but came out and performed well for Western Jets to sneak into the top 30 contention

pick 29 - Beau Addinsall - Gold Coast Academy, improving midfielder, wasnt sure on him at the u16s champs, but since then has improved

pick 30 - Dylan Patterson - Gold Coast Academy, was high on him after the u16s, but didnt have the improvement im looking for in 2024, still just in the top 30

Harry Morphet(Geelong) looked top 30 quality before his injury (broken leg at the u16s champs), came back for the last couple games in 2024, so im curious if he still has the passion to make the AFL.

Toby Whan will be a top ten pick
Has grown has a amazing left foot can kick 60m
Cant wait to see him perform at the champs next year
Freo list is going to be stacked with elite young talent
There premiership window will last 5 to 6 years
