I think we should just go to the draft rather than trying to get big name players. Slower rebuild (not total rebuild, rejuvenation maybe a better word) and then top up with roll players when we are ready to challenge. Hopefully Sheed improves enough to be a vital cog in the midfield. Use our top 10 pick on a midfielder which given the quality of talls in this years draft and the needs for talls for some of the other teams below us, means that even if we have pick 8ish we might get a top 5ish quaility midfielder. Use our second round pick on Waterman.

What would we get for Rosa if we let him go to free agency? End of second round pick? Something like that I would say.

I know that letting a midfielder go when we are short of quality midfielders is crazy but I think that Rosa has reached his ceiling and he is a good player but no more than that.

Already that is the start of a decent midfield rebuild and that is only into the second round without trading out Schofield or Lycett or someone like that which I believe are both options we could explore assuming we would get adequate compensation for losing them.

Trading out draft picks for quality players now, imo is the wrong thing to do.

So time to face facts, we need a midfielder clean out. So the question is, who can we get this year? who is out of contract that we can get? how many cash can we spend?
Do we have the stones to consider shopping around some of our existing players who aren't fulfilling their potential?

On Simpson, I think yesterday presser was the first time he's actually singled out one player for a shafting.

I thought his comments on Shuey were pretty pointed. He was fit. His body was 100%. And he wasn't tagged at all.

I'm sure Shuey will see that as the slap in the face it was meant to be

Was that in the context of a question about Shuey in particular, or a more general question about the lack of effort across the board?

Didn't stay up to watch the pressers last night, TV went off as soon as the siren sounded

It was a gentle slap though, thought it was well handled by Simpson.
IF he's not performing as we would like it's not because of his body. Oh, and he wasn't tagged tonight. (Thought that was a brilliant addition to the statement, so he let's Luke know there were no excuses). ;):thumbsu:
He had a shot at the collective group saying we didn't hunt the ball, the effort, work rate was not there. Thought that was a slap to the whole team.

Did North have any a-grade midfielders out there tonight?

They worked harder and spread better than our midfielders.

Harvey right now is still a better midfielder than any of ours at the moment, and faster than all them too, what a disgrace

Have to tell you, given the rubbish performance we put in - that presser was very impressive. Simpson is 100% the man for this job. He knows what our problems are.
Completely agree bombard. Liked what I heard.

DANGERFIELD - I'll swim the bass straight from victoria to tasmania just for him!

Blind Freddy can see what our problems are. Knowing what they are and being able to fix them are two completely different things. Until he actually fixes them he hasn't proven anything as a coach - and no amount of polished media performances will change that. He'll get his opportunity to do so.

Upgrade:
Sinclair
Maginness

Agree with most of your moves but I don't think we'd bother upgrading Maginness since he's been bouncing between the seniors and the twos for East Perth and isn't close to AFL selection at this point. He can have another year on the rookie list and we can use that spot on another ND pick.

Yeah good point. On the WAFL Watch thread it doesnt seem like many of our draftees are doing that well in the WAFL at the moment. I do know that Maginness has done some good things and should definitely be kept on, the RL is probably the better place. Agreed!

I think that leaves a maximum of 13 players leaving with one upgrade (assuming it all comes off), thats some serious list turnover. Id then be going hard for picks in the second/third round or trading players in.

Without going overboard and sacking our whole team what does everyone think we can do to improve our list by drafting or trading properly?
In reality after the first 3 rounds everyone got hope after Geelong it was injuries that cost us for a few weeks now we are back to full strength we bullied some kids gave Collingwood a good test (and should have won) and in my opinion had our second shocker for the season last night, the other one being the Carlton game. We have improved from last season but there are 3 things we lack badly that the club has been trying to fix but hasn't got it right yet. Speed in the middle and bigger bodies. Also super quick agile crumbing forwards. With that in mind what is the best road for the club to take? There are 3 players who would fit that we could try to trade for 1 Harley Bennell, 2 Nat Fife and 3 Chris Yarran. Bennell we may be able to swap only our firs pick for because he has a history of injury but is an outstanding talent. Fife would cost us our fist pick plus a KPP and half our cap but is the big body we need and is also an awesome link player that kicks goals. Yarran would cost our first pick plus maby a swap of second rounders given our first pick will probably be overs which wont make a difference because waterman will be a lock at pick 2. The other road is the draft and it will be a much longer road which I don't think we have time for with our stars such as Kennedy, Hurn, Leca, and our KPD's getting older.

As we are a successful club that expect to play finals every year we as supporters sometimes lack the same composure some of our players lack, particularly after a performance like last night. As supporters we can only judge and make assumptions on our team by what we see happen on the field and by what information the team puts into the media. We are unfortunately not on the inner sanctum so don’t get to see what the club is and isn't doing to satisfy our desires as supporters to succeed as team.

From where I sit as a supporter, I never thought we would make the finals in 2014, despite the ‘soft’ draw, countless “expert” opinions and champion data’s analysis of squad. When you look at the significant change to the coaching panel and in particular the inexperience of the new coaching panel, we as supporters should have hoped for the best, but in reality expected a challenging year. Very few teams, bar the cats, in recent times have had immediate success with a new coach, let alone a new coaching panel (Brenton Sanderson and a host of other coaches from the Bomber Thompson era were retained). Before we call for Adam’s head (yes people have started beating the drums on twitter already), and/or criticize his coaching decisions critically, I think we need to look at the coaching panel below, and recognise that Adam (from an outsiders point of view) is still working out the team, his team, and their capabilities. You have to get it right off field before you get it right on field.

· Adam Simpson – Head Coach – 1st year head coach, learning his trade with a coaching panel partially decided prior to his engagement. We all called for a change, and I think we need to be patient as he is in my opinion the right coach for our team.

· Neale Daniher – General Manager Football Operations – Highly regarded and a great mentor for what is a new coaching panel. Workload and/or future at West Coast not understood as he has Motor Neuron disease.

· Don Pyke - Specialist Coach, Game tactics and innovative systems – Joined the coaching team after seven years out of the AFL (admittedly kept his hand in at Claremont) when he ended a two-season stint at Adelaide as an assistant to Neil Craig in 2005-06. Pyke is responsible for Strategy, Stoppages and structure and is effectively Phil Walsh’s replacement. Was a strange decision in my mind, but one that will be judged among many others with Simmo if it has or hasn’t worked.

· Brady Rawlings - Assistant Coach, Midfield – 1st time assistant coaching role, previous experience as North Melbourne’s Senior recruiting and induction coach for 12 months.

· Justin Longmuir - Assistant Coach, Forwards – Only remaining member of the “John Worslfold” coaching panel. Development coach (presumably for Fwd’s and Rucks given his career), for Freo and Eagles up to 2011. Assistant coach since then

· Adrian Hickmott - Assistant Coach, Backline – Most extensive CV of all the coaches, but still a first time assistant coach at AFL level. Background is as head of development for Essendon, before becoming colts coach and league assistant for Swan Districts and then joining West Coast as a development coach in 2012, and his most recent role as assistant coach from the start of this season.

· Dean Cox – Ruck Coach – Player/Coach. Is one of the best ruckman to play the game and has completed the same recognised and reputed coaching course Adam Simpson has completed.

· Daniel Pratt/Jaymie Graham/Adam Selwood (Midfield) – Development Coach

· Mark Niksoki – Player Welfare and Development Coach

· Gavin Bell – Senior Development Coach

· Warren Kofoed – Performance Coach, Strength and Conditioning – Previously Richmond’s Rehab and Conditioning Coach

It would be safe to assume that at the end of the year, Adam would be looking at the team above, and with Daniher hopefully able to mentor him into ‘not doing everything” and adding to the team where he believes the team needs to be added to, potentially bringing in a Dean Laidley, Mark Harvey senior type to be his 2IC.

If we turn our focus to on-field, and may be put a little more credence in ‘expert’ opinions and champion data, along with our own analysis, in my opinion our list with small refinements could go from where we are now, to a true premiership threat. In my analysis of online opinion on this board, the main criticism is with our midfield, a view also shared by many supporters of other teams. Our backline and forward line (I know we are not taking marks) are not the problem, and whatever problems they may have/or that we may of complained about, can be in my opinion rectified by fixing our midfield. As obvious as it is we are lacking an A grade midfielder, a Dangerfield, Watson, Pendlebury etc, it is just as obvious what an A grade midfielder would do to others in the team e.g. Shuey who is down on form, potentially carrying an injury and struggling with a tag would be given freedom to use the skills we know he has and become an A grade midfielder because of this freedom (think how much better he was when Kerr was in the side and playing well sans injury), Wellingham is afforded the luxury of playing his Collingwood role, Disposal efficiency and decision making across the board is increased etc.

So who do we go after and who do we trade? We are likely to finish anywhere between 9th and 14th which will give us a pick between 6-12 (unsure of compensation picks floating around). Be as realistic as possible i.e. Pick 6 to 12 and Callum Sinclair/Schofield for Steve Coniglio. Below is a list Western Australian midfielder footballers that we might be able to entice home, as getting a Dangerfield is going to be nigh on impossible without compromising current and future list management. I realise some of the names do not fit A Grade midfielder (potential), but other do, so intrigued on people’s thoughts as to who should be trying to get, what we would have to realistically give up for them and why.
