Not really a big compliment considering that other than Corey Gault (pick 65, 2011) WA haven't produced an U18 ruck that has got drafted onto a clubs primary list since Naitanui.
Good catch, it's quite a misleading compliment.

I'm not suggesting Cameron isn't talented, EH seems to like him, but it's worthwhile tempering the comments on players when most here are going off little else.

I'm not even convinced he'll be the first ruckman drafted from WA this year let alone being the best since Nic.

I reckon Rory Lobb will get drafted before him.
Completely agree. The upside of Lobby, having played about 10 games of footy, is very high IMO.

And Gault was a real speculator IMO. I rate Lobb higher than I rated Gault.

Lobb looks like a good tap ruckman. Outside of that he doesn't do much. Taking him with a high pick would be risky IMO. There is no guarantee he will develop the other parts of his game.

Disagree entirely. He averaged about 23 hitouts and 12 disposals a game which is more than respectable. This is a kid who made a switch from basketball and in his first year managed to perform well enough that he was promoted from reserves and became the Swans #1 ruckman displacing Wes Lammie. His performance was nothing short of amazing. He still has a lot to learn about the game because he's new to it but the athleticism and raw talent are obvious. Whoever drafts him is getting an exciting package.

Simpson says that despite public opinion the club isn't limiting it's draft picks to local talent #goeagles

Good to see, neither we should be. Go home risk always a factor, but we have a fairly good retention rate of interstate players, we need to draft whoever the coaching staff and recruiting staff deem to be the best fit/skilled player for our game structure going forward

They are always going to trot out that line from now until the end of time. That being said I have no issue with where we draft our players from.

I also genuinely think WA has produced quite a few kids with skill sets and attributes that WC need more of. Acres, Cripps, Robertson and to a lesser extent Sheed. Even Jansen.

Best available regardless of where they are from.

Makes things interesting.

Let's say Bontempelli, Sheed, Acres, Lennon, Taylor and Salem etc are all available at pick 11 (they won't be but humour me).
Let's assume Boyd, Aish, Kelly, Billings and Scharenberg are already taken.
In what order would you put them for "best available", then what order would you put them for "needs"?

  1. Acres
  2. Bontempelli
  3. Sheed
  4. Lennon
  5. Salem
  6. Taylor

Any others that may be available that you'd like to insert?

You'd likely know better then I.

I think you've named a good bunch that could be there.

Wouldn't mind if we went Lennon. He might not be what we exactly need, but he wouldn't be far off best available.
Still, personally I'm pretty content with whoever we get (just don't want to go left field and pick a KPF (McCarthy).

Our 2nd and 3rd picks are more speculative and interesting.

But realistically I'd be happy with any of them.
And I should confess my vast ignorance in regards to most WA boys.
Most of what I know is based off 2nd hand accounts.
I've seen one game of Sheed and no games of Acres.
Conversely I've seen Bontempelli x 4, Taylor x 3, Salem x 4, Lennon x 3.

Sean Tighe, who is about the same age, had a few games where he got 30 disposals. He needs to work on improving his game around the ground.

Acres is getting more and more hype. May go top 10.
