I heard Rowey go on tonight about giving up our first pick for Grundy. As good as he is Ruckmen don’t win games but rather elite midfielders with a turn of pace and nice delivery. We overpaid for Gibbs because we seem obsessed with getting SA players home. We got peanuts for Dangerfield and others we have lost in recent years. If Grundy wants to come home he’ll do so in a year as a free agent and we won’t have to give up anything but dollars. We need elite mids and the only thing I’d do is a pick one for two picks in the top eight. Don’t overreact Adelaide and please remember your getting a 5 to 6 yr player and Collingwood then get one of two future stars for the next 14 years . Hold yr horses

Only the Crows and Rowey would be dumb enough to entertain trading Pick 1 for a guy that we can get for free at the end of next year.

The Crows have to be smart and realise that we're not winning a flag anytime soon so if Grundy is gettable then the best outcome would be using Pick 1 and then getting Grundy as a free agent at the end of 2020.

I would trade pick 1 for 2 picks in the top 10 if offered. I would then use one pick on Luko and with the other get the best mid with some speed. Next year go after Grundy when out of contract. My worry is we go after Anderson with pick 1 and he leaves to hawthorn after 2 years.

You're nuts!

2 and 3 actually. While that might be splitting hairs, pick one is certainly better than 2 and mostly ends up well. Although none of this is guaranteed.

They might be interested as Rankine hasn't worked out yet and might even be a bust. Luko is young and settling in but is way off from what they might have hoped.
Pick one should be a straight up start and Himmer may be something special and in a shorter timeframe than Luko.

I guess what I'm saying is, at this moment, 1 and Himmer for Luko and Rankine is about right.

We actually (effectively) got Milera for Dangerfield so it's not like it was a complete bust, Milera is going to be a jet. Also, he can kick.

I would definitely trade pick 1 if the deal is right.. just because you get picked at 1 rarely does the player become the best. I would trust hamish to make the call.
Considering what some on here were prepared to give up last year to land pick 1, with the shoe now on the other foot, you'd do some of those deals in a heartbeat. But it would need to be massive overs for me to be happy to trade out pick 1. I'm much more inclined to take it to the draft and bring the best u/18 midfielder in the land to our club.

1. You wouldn't get Luko that cheap. 2. You've been extremely critical of the club and demanding that we rebuild and bottom out to get elite talent. We have a chance to get the best of the best of this years crop and you want to downgrade and do more of the same of what the club has always done ?? That makes no sense.

We have shown time and time again over the last couple of years we need another top class elite Midfielder,
One may fall into our laps and we turn it down for a Ruck,

Grundy is not worth a 1st or2nd draft pick to Crows, he may be an improvement but he working with one of the best midfield in the comp.
In this year draft, the top 2/3 will be elite 4/6 very good rest will be hit and miss.

If we want Grundy wait a year. if we want Luko and Rankine wait until their contracts expire. They are not worth paying overs, and pick 1 alone will not be enough.

Yes I want elite talent that stays. The Afl needs to bring in rules similar to the NBA where first round players can't leave for 5 years unless its the clubs choice. I am sick of top end talent walking out the door from interstate clubs. Sometimes pick 5 is better than pick 1. All depends on our recruitment staff getting it right and luck. If we can get a forward and mid with a single pick it's a win win. Either way we are in a good position. When i hear people like brereton arrogantly saying if we take anderson he will definitely come back to hawthorn at some stage it annoys me. I don't like Brereton but he is probably correct in his assessment. I wouldn't be swapping pick 1 for Grundy anyway in our current predicament. If he generally wants to come home we should do this deal when out of contract.

I agree, Adelaide needs mids, we are slow and last night just reinforced that issue, they need to use the 1 pick for a gun mid with high speed, Luko will be fine but we are not giving up 1 for him, I pray that they do not trade Himmelburg as his ability to lead, catch and work are hard to find. We will pay the price for the Gibbs trade as he is finished, too long in a bad club and does not play hard 1 on 1 on the inside, kicks around body etc, they keep tolerating Atkins and that is costing us, he is a frustrating player and I am sure he would be driving them crazy. On the positive Milera is going to be outstanding, Keath is a massive bonus, Brodie Smith is making a huge difference to the quality of our back 6 - in short we need speed in our midfield and front half desperately. We are no orphans in this very average football competition with 6 clubs too many! I am happy if they get rid of the AFL and we go back to having 13000 at Suburban ovals and watching real football, not this manufactured rubbish that looks like an arcade game.

Put a good team around them, pay them what they're worth, and they'll stay. We've had some players leave that are clearly getting pretty big overs in regards to salary from opposition clubs. Which I don't have too much of a problem with. What I do have a problem with and it has clearly affected our overall salary cap in the past, is the money that some of our lower tier and older guys would be getting paid. Reduce that, and direct the dollars where it needs to be going. Be more ruthless, especially with guys extending their careers on 1 year contracts. I would hope Mackay is on an absolute rock bottom contract, but I highly doubt he is.

We only end up paying for pick 10 in a weak draft for Gibbs (Carlton drafted LoB with this pick who isn't developing that well) because luckily Carlton finish last and there were only 2 FA compensation picks that affected this pick.

I still rate Gibbs as better than pick 10 in a weak draft and luckily it doesn't look his body is cooked, he has been durable all his career and I think Pyke is trying to teach him to defend, he has shown he can after his role on Oliver so I think you went to early on Gibbs, he still has at least 2 more years (it wouldn't surprise me if he plays for another 4 years but it up to him).
