News Dr Bridie O'Donnell elected to the board

If I posted about the overwhelming number of black players in the NBA you would call me a racist. If any of the white men on the board are not doing a good job or not credentialed then by all means call for their removal. Mentioning their skin colour and gender is ridiculous and hypocritical. Look to the content of their character as Martin used to say.

The committee for 2020, chaired by Suncorp Super Netball CEO Chris Symington will include the following representatives:

  • Catherine Clark (CEO – QLD Firebirds)
  • Nikki Horton (GM – NSW Swifts)
  • Jane Woodlands-Thompson (GM – Collingwood Magpies)
  • Stacey Marinkovich (Head Coach – West Coast Fever)
  • Jo Weston (Player Delegate – Melbourne Vixens)
Any issue with this line up for the Super Netball Competition? Is it diverse enough?

While I have no idea about the setup of Super Netball, I would say that this is simply a committee and not the actual board. There is a difference. This committee seems to be represented by the actual clubs.

If the board was all female, then I would say it is nowhere near as good as it should be without, for example, highly credentialed male representation.

This selection doesn't look good for the Korda ticket. Just shows why he doesn't fill me with much confidence he is the person to get the club through the next phase of rebuilding the confidence and reliability the club has lost over the past few months.
I would like to think a smooth transition of power to the Jeff Browne led ticket can happen and we can get a breath of fresh air into the boardroom, which will hopefully resonate through the club. Right now the club could change its name to Circus Oz....

Yep, comical stuff, the whole existing board needs to go, they paid head hunters with club money and elected an ineligible person.

Agree
What does it say about the headhunters who failed to deliver on the brief.
Assuming of course the 24 mth eligibility criterion was listed on the brief.
This is a bad start for Korda, who is supposed to be a “details” man.

As a paid employee I would really hope being a supporter is not considered when filling a role like CEO. Board members though who aren’t paid and are volunteering their time should really have a strong passion for the club, IMO.

Your overall point is fine, but passion doesn't need to come from a history of supporting the club.

Alex Waislitz sat on the board for a long time, despite not being a Collingwood man at the start, and no one --except Markfs-- questioned his ability to do the job.

It seems that O'Donnell is a latecomer, but that won't preclude her from being passionate, professional and conscientious. Everything I've heard about her bodes well in that regard.

I'm sure Kappa will find something else to whinge about quite quickly.

You can call it whinging , the facts are facts, we are a club that has become a sh!tshow in the last 8 months , from recruiting, overpaying players, unceremoniously telling our players who loved the club and were best 22 that they were not wanted ,then pay these said players to play against us, An ex president (dictator) who believed that our club was his baby alone to drive , a board that is a rabble, factions within factions, appointing people to positions whilst ignoring what the Club constitution states. appeasing the masses , mainly the media and do gooders by placing people within the club to balance the gender ledger , tokenism at it`s best , yeah nothing to whinge about here , you may enjoy been laughed at by the opposition as we wallow in depths of the cellar dwellers for who knows how long, but I don`t.

She sounds qualified. Very odd that we couldn’t find someone who is a Collingwood supporter... maybe it’s less uncommon than I thought to have directors of a football club who barrack for someone else?
I have a mate who was a mad Pies fan growing up who ended up on the board at St Kilda. Just a career move but loves the Saints now.

Is it naive to expect a board member supports the club and is doing everything in their power to help the club they love? Or it doesnt' matter and just limits the field of quality applicants? I guess we feel it doesn't matter. Waislitz was a Carlton supporter when he joined the board wasn't he?
I thought Waislitz was a Collingwood supporter, whereas his ex-wife (Pratt’s daughter) was a Carlton supporter.

Would there be any fuss if Collingwood came out and said they STRONGLY wanted a male elected to the vacant board role?

If we had 5 women and 2 men on the current board, and one of those women was leaving, and the club said they wanted to replace that seat with a man, then no, I don’t think there would be any fuss.

This ain’t about men versus women. It’s about more gender balance on the board given (1) last I looked our membership wasn’t far off 50:50, and (2) If we’re following the general trends of a modern workplace, our staff gender balance would be roughly 50:50 (no, not for reasons of wokeness, but for reasons of effectiveness ) and (3) Our athlete gender count these days wouldn’t be far off 50:50.

Somebody has suggested that a 4-3 male:female board is more representative than a 5-2 male:female board. IMO that’s not unreasonable. You clearly think it is.

It’s quite ironic that O’Donnell allegedly had corporate governance expertise - except when it applies to her!

The Board should resign for this embarrassing appointment, in breach of one of the most straight forward provisions in the Constitution.

They rejected “cooldewd” Vic Nicholas as a prospective board member 15 years ago because he hadn’t been a member for 2 years ...and now this.

What a farce of a Board.

Just proving for the billionth time that the people running the joint are the biggest bunch of clowns the afl has ever seen

The allegiance thing is a big one, as is the speculation that she has publicly shamed our club. I agree with the sentiment that she is well credentialed, but if she is as good as purported why isn’t she on the bulldogs board? Organisations are clambering to get gender balance.

I couldn’t give two hoots about a persons gender, race, or anything. I judge people on merit. 5-10 years ago if they appointed her I wouldn’t have even blinked, I would have known that the right decision was made and for the betterment of the club. Diversity in teams really does give you the best outcome.

In today’s age when a woman or somebody from a minority group is appointed I am sceptical, and rightly so. Today positions are gifted to people that are not necessarily best fit. Sizer fits that category too. They may be great, and the best possible candidates only time will tell. At the moment for me they are the best of the women who make up about 10% of people in the leadership pool. Sizer even less so.

I would much rather we select the best from 100% of the available pool. We already have Christine Holgate committed and very capable.

This isn’t a normal case of the pros and cons of affirmative action, and should we simply hire the best person for the job of footy manager / boot studder / etc / etc irrespective of gender / race / etc.

One of the primary functions of the board is to represent us, the members. And so for good governance it’s helpful that the board is representative of the demographic of the members.

So the reason for the better gender balance on the board has nothing to do with creating board opportunities for women ...

... but rather to better reflect the gender composition of the membership (and other stakeholders such as staff, athletes and sponsors).

If we’d instead had a 5 women and 2 men on our board, then I’d expect that we would have recruited a male instead for exactly the same reason.

The one who checks that the salary cap info in the board report stacks up..
If only.

In actuality I think it's measured by who has the most expensive car in the car park.

life was so much easier when the board went to the urinal and the winner was obvious....

Maybe that's because most of the growth in AFL participation has actually come from females. All this because of AFLW. It's the future whether you like it or not.
Let’s not get carried away. The growth was from females because the room for growth was from females. For seemingly forever there was no pathway for adolescent girls to continue playing football, and now thankfully, there is. That doesn’t mean that the potential for growth in the women’s game is boundless, however.

Need to change thread title to “Dr Bridie O’Donnell NOT elected to the Board”
Or “Dr Bridie O’Donnell NOT elected to the Board, but appointed, and now remains there without voting rights before likely being ousted anyway.”

Not sure you should mention people's names.
