If we manage to win 5-6 games out of the last 10 & puts us up around 10-11th on the ladder (10-11 wins) - pick 8 or 9 - do we keep the pick or trade or trade down or trade up?

(As a guide, Geelong (11.5 wins - 10th), GWS (11 - 11th) & Collingwood (10 - 12th) had picks 9, 8 & 7 respectively)

What do people think we should do if we do end up with pick 8 or 9?

I think it's worth doing some kind of deal with GWS to upgrade our pick to Collingwoods. Having a look at the draw I think it's almost a definite that pick will be pick 5, where as I think we will end up with about pick 8.

It gives us some kind of chance of getting either Brodie or McLuggage if GC have to use their first on an academy pick and Freo go for SPS.

If not we still get Scharenburg.
I don't think we're in the position to make that trade.
Unless someone wants to go up who we don't really need.
I think we just keep the original selection

Definitely trade up for the right price.

I think it's going to be very tight between 10th and 13th. I had a look the other day and St Kilda, Melbourne, Richmond and Carlton could all end up with about 9 wins give or take.

Or keep our first & trade our 2017 first for GWS's first they received from the Pies? Pick 5 & 7 to grab Brodie/McLuggage & Ainsworth?

They would only do that if there's a kid they know they can't get now and can get with that pick.
When the trade would go through would be a fair while from the draft and a lot can change ie bolters

Why would GWS want that trade?

To spread out first round picks across multiple drafts for their academy selections. Same reason they've done similar in the past trading for future selections. They'll get more first round picks this year for McCarthy & possibly Marchbank, Steele, Tomlinson, etc.

Honestly if 2017 is as good as people say we shouldn't trade out of the first round.

Our problem in the Riewoldt era rebuild was that come 2004 the brakes went on drafting quality and the list suffered for it so we needed top ups like Ray King Mini Eddy to fill in the gaps come our challenge period and didn't get that list balance.

Unless a dynamite trade is available we shouldn't throw away quality picks in a strong draft.

Umm Mini was a first round draft pick.
Taken in between Pattison and Cam Wood LOL. First round ran out of quality ( if that's the word ) after Monfries.

To make things worse that was the year Black inflicted Fiora onto us.
Hindisight suggests we should have said, &*%$ you Richmond, here is a five year contract for Simmonds. Which means the King top-up would not have been necessary and we wouldn't have drafted Hackland. A good touch would also have been drafting a future ruck in Maric at the pick we took Ackland with.

If we had Maric and Simmonds we would have been able to get Dangerfield instead of McEvoy.

How's that for Sliding Doors?

The horrible topping up was already happening. Fiora. Ackland . Ugh.

I propose this:
St Kilda Trade Out: 1st (2016), 1st (2017).
In: GWS 1st (2016), Marchbank and a fringe.

Essentially we upgrade our first from ~8 to 5 this year, whilst pinching a Marchbank (and something else back?) by sacrificing next year's first.

Ideally we rise up the ladder next year with Carlisle, new recruits and continued development- it's not unfathomable that our first pick next year is 10+. We then can look at offloading any one of Hickey/Longer/Pierce and hopefully one of those can nab us a first to get back into the supposed bumper draft.

Would GWS look at this?

Is 2017 being thought of as a bumper draft in the sense that we have a Judd/Ablett top 2 or 3? or that there are 10-12 A-grade draftees? or there are going to be 30+ 150 gamers?

I think unless it's the 10-12 A-grade draftees 'bumper' draft I don't think we should worry about it too much to be honest.

Draft with our 1st in 2016 and trade 2017's for young GWS talent. If it is then it's a question of what our recruiters think of the 2017 potential A-graders as against the talent we can trade in from GWS.

Not sure that the Giants will want to give away first round picks from this year will all of there academy selections

Without being a pro recruiter like rahul n co this sounds like a very good idea. Mclug, Marchbank and a gift sounds good to me. Surely we are then almost ready.

Barrels or anyone else. Thoughts on Myles Poholke? From the weekends gave he looked lively, showed good pace, good evasive movement & strong hands. Strong looking unit too. Reminded me of a Robbie Gray type.

Scharenberg, McBaggage, Brodie or Bowes for me. I know 99% chance GC take Bowes but you never know. Still very much on the Scharenberg train, I think he'll end up being a bigger bodied mid as well, he's 186cm now I think so already 6 foot 1 but could end up a bit taller still, he still hasn't turned 18.

Watch some of his highlights and his kicking technique and the way he reads play and makes good decision. It seems he can play a few positions as well.

WANT.

Huge fan
Could be a very high level player at AFL his hands are a huge weapon
Best case scenario comparison-Luke Parker
but probably won't get to that level but the marking is a huge threat

Big fan all year. Just not quite in the same breath as Brodie, McCluggage, Scharenberg...
