List Mgmt. Draft Discussion 2016

Just looking and listening to some of the info available around about this years crop of players, it just seem so much stronger than last year. I was a little dejected at the choices we had last year at pick 6... I mean, its pick 6! Were are the standout mids???? Francis, are you kidding me, is that the best available?

In the end we traded for a defensive pillar and a young but short half forward that may be the 3rd or 4th best mid in the draft. Gresh has played a lot more games than I expected too, we got SOOOOOO lucky.

This year looks so much better. I know many talk about next year as a great draft, but I think the question for us is: will it be a great midfield draft? this year looks to be a great midfield draft and compared to last year, lots of kids in the state games are getting 25 and 30 possession games, that was rare last year. I wouldn't mind us going hard at a trade that gets us a second first round pick, if it is going to deliver two quality mids like McLug, and say The Berg.

Two guys really stood up at the death in the Vic Country/Vic Metro clash for mine - Daniel Venables and Andrew McGrath. Venables, McCluggage, Brodie and Scharenberg are obviously up for consideration with our top pick now with their form and Petrevski-Seton, Berry and Simpkin are worthy from their previous form.

So I'd like to make the case for McGrath. We need leadership, pace and elite foot-skills. Tick, tick, (possibly) tick.

Whilst he's currently being touted by some as a defender, here's Knightmare's profile ....

"A 44-disposal, 19-tackle, 14-clearance TAC Cup game is the reason for McGrath's rise. Earlier in the year, McGrath showed an ability on the outside but going onto the ball and having this kind of impact was a clear moment that will have made all watchers re-evaluate their views of McGrath. .... (He) is a midfielder with the versatility to play multiple positions who shows a willingness to take on the game with his run and carry but also has the ability to win his own ball. He also displays class and composure with ball in hand and is a reliable ball user who uses the ball particularly well by foot."

Surely if we had some alignment thing up this is the bloke we should pick!

Speaking of which I have actually had a thought about this. I reckon a team should get to make one bid on draft night for their respective TAC side, outside the first round, once that player has been picked by another club. How awesome would the night be?

Say Sydney pick up McGrath with Pick 27 and we were just like, nah mate.. he is ours! And snatched him back (but obviously paying the price in points).

Good system?

One or two on the D&T board said McGrath reminded them a bit of Gav Wanganeen with the way he plays the game and his attributes, which is a fair wrap!

Someone else said they were at the HOF the other night and spoke to a few of the clubs who said Venebles is a top 5 pick that clubs are super-high on.

I like the look of Venables looks like an other De Goey type.

I haven't seen any of him yet but De Goey is exactly the one that comes to my mind when I read anything about Venebles. Not high possession numbers, but really high impact, either up forward or in the midfield.

Against a very very poor Gippsland side...

But he's a good prospect, no doubt.

Keep an eye on Jack Scrimshaw too; 193cm 80kg AFL Academy kid out of the Dragons. Very good in patches on Monday with literally ZERO preseason, and projects as a tall midfielder despite playing as a defacto CHB. His athleticism and agility are insane for a 6'3 bloke, and he's lovely by foot.

guess who got named:

Backs: 29. A. Scotney, 31. A Naughton, 20. J. Levien
H Backs: 19. J. Patmore; 36. G Logue; 23. J. Rotham

H Fwds: 34. B. Starcevich, 27. J. Waterman, 22. C. Zurhaar

Actually a really good comparison, much better than Dusty Martin, which I've been (uncomfortably) running with.

Both the same size (Venables: 186cm 81kg, De Goey: 187cm 82kg), both have had a delayed start due to injuries, neither stood/are standing out as massive possession winners, but both make things happen, both kick goals and both love the big moments; they're both 'give the responsibility to me' types.

Martin is really a mid who is a super dangerous forward. De Goey and Venables both appear to be dangerous forwards who are lethal in on-ball bursts.

Super call. :thumbsu:

Let's put everything into perspective, this is not a super draft and there's no Paddy McCartin or Petracca types, more Brayshaw types.
De Goey was an out and out star, IMO the second best mid in his draft year behind Petracca. To me he is a Michael Voss clone in a couple of years time.

I would seriously consider trading our first pick this year for a first pick next year and then try and get back into the second round.

Barrels, nice Scrimshaw call ;)

Edit: A great year for Essendope to get the first pick! Suck shit cheats!

I don't think anyone's saying they're the same player BS, but for comparison's sake - which is always an awkward exercise - it's a good fit.

Leon Baker? Gus Logue?

This is a GREAT year to finish last! If Bowes ends up one of the top prospects, GC could trade two top ten picks for #1. That would be a great result. And an early second rounder is very good this year, due to there being plenty of good kids up to around 20-25 in this even draft.
And even if there isn't a clear top prospect, I wouldn't be too disappointed adding a Mcluggage, SPS, Brodie or Venables to the list!

I think I want Venables now. Pretty excited about the kid tbh.

Psd pick 1 is the real reward finishing last during trade/draft period IMO. Unless there's an out an out gun at 1 in the nd which doesn't look like the case. I could see you blokes pulling the trigger on a kpp at pick 1 in the nd. Todd Marshell a chance.

Keep telling yourself that.

At this stage one will be in StKilda jumper .

Disagree with comments about talent this year , if you saw the standard of football played between
Vic Metro & Vic Country was top class .
Kids like William Drew ,Tom Jok ,Mitchell McCarthy , Myles Poholke, Josh Battle, Oscar Clavarino,Dylan Clarke,
Talin Duman,Tim Taranto could be anything, not even mentioning the other well known draftees.

Drew & Poholke really impressed me.
