AFL Autopsy Elimination Final: Loss to the Weagles

Pretty much the standard Essington recipe:

1. Inability to execute skills
2. Panic/lack of composure
3. The good old bomb it into the forward line (with no Awlyn Davey!)
4. Playing unfit/underdone players

Woosha talks about learnings, but not sure we learn too gooderer?

There were some positives last night- Franga, Pidge, Saad, Ambrose, Steve Smith (GOAT), Boomers 3-0.

Same issues.
Poor skills.
Lack of hard edge.
Limited players who can take a contested mark.
Two midfielders short.
B grade KP forwards.

Was expected. And that’s the sad part.
Spot on Max.
Very predictable result. What i didn't expect was how many players did not turn up.
Long off season for those guys but I am sure that after mad Monday they won't give it another thought... and it begins again... and again.
Change something before your career has flashed past. (not necessarily the coach either)

After I felt he had a poor year McGrath was good, Ambrose was solid again and I'm quite comfortable going forward with him in the backline.

Too many underdone players and frankly just not at the level. Which was pretty obvious coming in we were playing a top two team on their home deck, but you have to convince yourself there is hope.

The first 10mins was actually quite good but the dumb decisions just cuts you off at the knees.
I can handle Parish making some skill errors trying to do the right thing and not go long down the line. The decision was there just not the skills. What I can't cop is laverde making repeatedly stupid decisions to bomb it long. Some of that stuff early was absolute horror show stuff. He wasn't alone by any stretch but I can understand mids panicking and just throwing it on the boot but he was in space in dead play and makes those decisions.
Shiel and Merrett for supposedly our two best midfielders played like seconds players.
Mitch brown offering nothing in the way of a contest in the air is frustrating and he should be nothing more than depth next year.

I'm quite happy with the off field stuff going into next year. New fitness department, new ball movement coach in Caracella and I'd like John to be there for the final year with an announced agreement it is his last early in the season.

The main thing is, you put a key forward in this side and I feel we grab 2-3 more wins than we did. You cant run with McKernan as your key target. He has improved but it just doesn't work. Get rid of laverde and brown and bring in Joe and Dev and I think that's our best setup.

The entire off season should be spent with the mids doing skill work, but not just the excecution, the decision making. I'll give them a slight pass of 6 changes every week for 4 weeks the cohesion may have been off and the pressure of a final but it has to improve as it's diabolical at the moment.

It's funny how all year woosha said don't worry about results, we are building a style to stand up in finals, like this imaginary switch would click and we'd be a finals team

From my vantage point we played the exact game we played against wce mid-year.

The rhetoric is old, at some point you have to be accountable for now, not some thing in the future that may or may not even happen.

I think Parish was the most disappointing for us last night, after a pretty solid year he completely wilted under finals pressure, thought he might have gone the other way to be honest, let’s hope he learns from that.

Sick of this ****ing 'team'... Pidge, Hepp, Saady, Redman, Franga and Snelling the only blokes that showed a bit of heart!

Too many ****ing passengers: Langford, Laverde, TBC, Hooker, Smack, Ham (wtf did he get a game for?), Stringer, Brown, Fantasia...

Can someone please explain how Shiel was continually running onto his right ****ing foot? The bloke literally only has a right leg for balance, yet 80% of his kicks last night seemed to be on his right or running right..

Please don't blame the coach Essendon... our players are just shit!

Agreed with your assessment of the players.

But the coach should cop a lot of heat.
The team doesn’t play for him. And that’s how he likes it for some ****ed up reason!

The implemented game plan is not sustainable and is a large reason for our inconsistency.

We need stronger leadership on and off the field.

Move on Worsfold, Skipworth, Harding and both corrigans.

BC 33 is already coming.
Rutten is probably the front runner for the job.
I would enquire about Chris Newman or Adam Yze.

On reflection, it’s disappointing to lose another Elimination final but were we even any chance of winning that match last night? West Coast would have to be the best 5th placed team I’ve seen for a long time, they would have started favourites and beaten every other team in the comp in a home final.

The disappointing part of the match for me was the 2nd half of the 1st and the 1st half of the 2nd quarters, we were poor right through that period, the rest of the match was ok and we showed bits and pieces before falling away at the end which is to be expected once you know you can’t win an elimination final.

Pretty strange year, had a few good moments, had too many poor moments, injuries killed us again. We unearthed a few and killed off a few players, hopefully we can take a giant leap forward next year.

A bit of a disappointing way to end the year but oh well. Not too upset. With our injury list this year we were never going to win the flag. Hopefully a good off season and a more injury-free season next year.

I think for many it's not so much the result, but the way we went about it. There's nothing wrong with losing to a better team, but being comprehensivly outworked for karge parts of the game is very frustrating (especially when it appears to be a trend). We seemed to give up control of the game far too quickly, and didn't really appear to try and wrest it back for quite a while

Am i the only one who thinks maybe it's time to start a mini rebuild and try and enforce a new culture at the club? I mean, in the last several years the one consistent variable in all of these elimination final smashing and inconsistent seasons has been of course the players. Maybe it's time to move a few of them on and start again. I personally would rather watch us in a rebuilding phase then scraping into finals and getting torn a new one every year. of course i am just a pleb in the grand scheme of things so what do i know
