Opinion Emotions after losing a grand final

Of course how many times have teams done the same and got away with it. Croad in 08 , Brown in 95 , even today Id reckon three Swans at least were sus going in , then during another couple went down.

For mine conversion covers a multitude of sins. How many did we miss in 08
Today 14:7 beats 11:15. 26 scoring occurrences to 21. Don't know the stats but how often does a side get beaten when the other side has 4 less score occs. If we broke it down into setshots I wonder what it is for each side.
Franklin will not get the heat Cam Mooney got , but he should. His set shot conversion is why we have beaten them the last 8 or 9 times and why they lost today. Looking back , I only wish they had funneled the ball more to him in 08. (If we had not played Scarlo on him , perhaps they would have)
We did miss too many, but Hawks used rushed as a tactic > than ever that day.
Point was, we were past our best, overcooked, fatigued, injured, same as Saints 09, Hawks 2012, Pies 2011. Just NQR. And in September on GF day, every little bit counts.

Agreed. The constant dish off to team mates that happened thru the year hid a lack of conversion confidence. So when the heat was on and our conversion was low.. thats when all the factors you have mention kicked in. We played to the mantra that if we keep up our KPI's , keep to the process , focus on games plan .. that it would all work out in the end. Crap. You get so long to make the most of your efforts and we wasted our effort , then being over cooked, fatigued etc prevented us recovering when the other side did.
Of course the rushed tactic didn't help. Again we ignored the power of that in a big game. The AFL had a bodyline moment when that happened in the GF. They could see the game being effected for the worse the changed the rules.

what you fellas have to understand is i didn't come here to disrespect you guys, if anything i love geelong and they are easily my 2nd club preference.

Im 28 so was to young to remember the 89 or 91 as i didn't follow footy as much.. At the end of the day, wayward kicking and bad luck cost geelong the 08 grand final and it seems it bit us this year.

I know there will be up and down time's, but i now know how you catters felt like then.

Good luck to the catters next season hope you guys keep pushing because nothing beats a hawthorn geelong grand final.

Peace out and enjoy the off season fellas

The OP actually crystallizes a a thought i had about the Hawks losing. Simply that any Hawk Gen Y fan or younger simply never knows this feeling. A Grand Final win record until before today of 10 wins from 15 losses, and a previous GF loss way back in 1987 means that a whole generation of Hawks just don't know this bitter disappointment.

To be honest, it's part and parcel of what should be a normal 'lifetime' of following a footy club. But ask us back in 2006, and we'd know nothing but failure and disappointment. A Dog, Saint or Dees fan similarly would never know the joy of victory which assuages the pain of defeat. The Saints especially so, for a club that has just one flag, they have been so, so close twice in recent years, and to be honest imagine the sliding doors if the Saints in 1971 were able to bring home their 20 point 3/4 lead into a second flag, leaving the Hawks with just a single one? No club has enjoyed success like the Hawks in the last 40 years, and losing today, in a close, tough game, is just simply a 'fair suck of the sav'. Played some great footy, played a mighty tough opponent..lose game.

It happens, so you just have to remember that a lot of your talented players are still on the right side of 25 y/o, and your team will be thereabouts as long as Franklin and Rioli remain on the park. Life is not all smiles and sunshine, and as Queen sang in in a line of a song...'In every life a little rain must fall'.

As a Hawks fan..you can be thankful you have seen Flags, and think of some others who never have. Indeed the Swans...before '05 it was way back in 1933....so they provide almost the best example.

Pretty good post. Perhaps this will bring some humility to the god knows how many Hawk fans who have only really followed the club since they began to rise. WINNING almost always goes hand in hand with LOSING grand finals. As brilliant as the Hawks were in the 80s, they lost THREE. For our recent success we suffered the pain of 08. The Pies took two GFs to win in 2010 and coughed one up after a remarkably dominant season in 11. The Swans and Eagles traded winning and losing before that and the Lion's got their due in 04.

It sucks but you get over it quickly. The weather gets warmer, days get longer and there is plenty to distract yourself with. Also at least the Hawks are still fairly young and in terrific shape off field.

Most of us can understand that but what you need to understand is the "comments' you have invoked are less about you ,and much more about the tortuous invective that we have been on the end off from your fellow Maybloom's over the years , especially after your win in 08. Have a good off season.

You are right, pretty much every team that has won one has also lost one. Kangaroo's lost '98 but then came back in '99 and won. Bombers in 2000 then losg the following year, Port well I don't need to go there. I think only the Crows haven't lost one yet. Their time may come soon as they press their case for another GF birth in the next year or so.

I wish we won too, but we didn't. Turbo, you really need to accept it. ;)

The Crows were a different case. They came from non dominant home and away seasons in their winning years. Could be argued they got their comeuppance in 05 and 06 when they were a much better regular season side (extremely dominant at one point in 06) than in 97-98 yet slumped to two consecutive excruciating preliminary final defeats.

honestly i have never felt how it feels to lose a grand final, and it bloody hurts.

I come to you guys since you also felt it and want to know what gives you the desire continue following your team through the whole year and just end up losing on the big day?

Hawks where clearly the best side in 2012 as were the cats in 08... im just lost for words atm so i came to you guys as you also went through it.
Your team, should always be your team. Like a marriage, for better or worse. On a personnel note, dont turn on the news or pick up a paper for 7 days. There will be nothing but red and white.

Yeah but it still would have been a much bigger kick in the balls to have lost the GF over the Prelims. I live in Adelaide, when the Crows get into a GF the whole city gets ready to explode. Think of a much bigger Geelong with a million ferals ready to go nuts. I get reminded a lot that the Crows have never lost a GF, and so do Port supporters. The Crows need to lose a GF, not another Prelim.

Haha I don't live in Adelaide so will take your word for it. I did very much enjoy the eery shock and stone cold silence coming through the TV that engulfed the AAIMI stadium 'cauldron' of one-eyed Crows late in their 06 home prelim once they realised a game they arrogantly assumed they would just win was gone.

how stupid must Brereton be?
He bags Hawkins start of the season implying he hasn't actually done anything in big games....yep' he said Hawkins soccered through goals of the deck and subsequently it wasn't a big deal, Hawkins destroys Hawthorn in each of their two encounters this year.

Today, he completely takes the bait and fires back at a Cat caller on SEN and says Cats won't even make finals next year.
Talk about some extra ammunition we clearly don't even need against that mob.

Here's to a steady fast-tracked return for Menzel & Varcoe...and uninterrupted pre seasons into the legs of Pods, Vardy and Simpson :thumbsu:

To the OP- disappointment is simply part of being a footy fan, regardless of which team you support. You can take solace in the fact that you guys will be well and truly in contention this year, and the loss today can only serve to motivate and fire up your players.
2008 didn't hurt as much as I thought it would, although it must have been torture to support Geelong in the early-mid 90s (I was too young during that time and didn't begin following footy until 12-13 years ago)

Losing happens and you have to live with it. I've dealt with it in different ways before, and being a Cats supporter through the 80s and 90s, don't think I've experienced more than my fair share of heartache.

Was too young to remember 67, but was more proud than heartbroken after 89 (we'd come a very long way that year). Felt gutted after 92, left the 94/95 Grand Finals in the last quarter and had a fair bit to drink afterwards. 2008 hurt but didn't feel terrible after what had happened the previous year. As you can see, I've dealt with it in various ways before, and would advise the op that drinking isn't the best way to ease the pain. Losing GFs is just something you have to deal with.

2013 is ours for the taking, I can feel it in my bones. :footy:

Meh. I doubt our players give a shit what he thinks. We need Kennet to say the same and for it to be all over papers and radio. Just reestablish the curse.
