Every time this dickhead opens his mouth the more I feel satisfied that we dodged a huge bullet.

As much as I hated losing Gibbs it was easy to understand. Adelaide boy. Young family. Chasing success. Unlikely to see it here. More money because his agent ganked us on his last long term deal. It was all there.

But Shiel? It would have been like losing Gibbs 3+ years before he did (before he signed the previous contract). Life after footy talk? Sure. Look at your academic avenues as you're entering and in your prime football years. But to be looking at them as heavily as he was doesn't inspire the greatest confidence in his desire to sustain a long, hard football career.

No remorse or accountability whatsoever.

At best you would have to accept poor leadership allowing "experimental supplements" program to be introduced and exposing his team to this.
Association with dubious characters, notionally qualified to be conducting the "experiment". Questionably sourcing of the "experimental supplements".
Connections to the dark side.

Just a total lack of due diligence, unacceptable by any measure when players welfare is potentially at risk.
Let alone associating the club, supporters and the AFL with questionable characters and practises.

Hird can not be rehabilitated, as he never accepted any fault or accountability or even acknowledged the risks.

All we got from Hird and the Essendon hierarchy was the the Sgt Shultz position....we know nothing.
And an arrogant challenge.... prove that we did wrong.

This is an abysmal saga on any level.

Hird is not a fit and proper person to lead any organisation, or be in a position of influence.

The thing that staggers me about Hird is that he had such an easy way out of the whole mess by taking some (ANY) responsibility.

All he had to do was come out relatively early in the piece and say something along the lines of:
"I never had anything to do with the supplement program and was not aware of the substances that Dank was using. I am not medically trained so I put my trust in my medical team to follow the rules. I would never condone the use of untested chemicals on my players and jeopardise their welfare like that.
HOWEVER, as head coach, I have ultimate responsibility for the players and so I had a duty to inform myself about this program. I should have made inquiries about the supplements and put a stop to it when I found out the truth. Because I failed to do this, I have no choice but to resign."

Doesn't even matter if it was 70% lies, the media would have fallen over themselves about how 'brave' and ethical he was, and he would have been back coaching within 12-24 months with his reputation intact, possibly even enhanced.

Yep.
It's one thing to dope up the list in the biggest cheating scandal in the history of our sport.

But he chose to double down by taking it to court.
Twice.
****ing Twice!

And thus dragging this whole sorry saga on for years, completely unnecessarily.
He deserves no sympathy.

I always believed that Bomber Thompson was fouler than Hird in all of this. He had worked with all of the external culprits previously. Then he obviously had the drug bust last year and there was the word that was happening in his private life whilst he was at Geelong. Yet they never investigated the Cats which I always thought stunk to high heaven.

Doesn't excuse Hird for all of his shit though. He had more than enough chances to come clean and has failed to do so on every occasion.

This one has all the makings of someone coming clean, 15-20 years down the line when it no longer really matters.

Hird is a lying, narcissistic, God-complexed flog with no sense of morals or decency.
Only player/coach charged with bringing the AFL into disrepute twice.
Should never be allowed near any level of football and certainly not in charge of players.
Only Essendon would be dumb enough to re-employ that fool after what he did to the game.

exactly, the 30 years retired ex-pm with the "if I had my time again" disclosures - too little, too late, **** off..............

Mark Twain encapsulated the reality of such a scenario beautifly when he wrote that; "...Fanatics will never learn that, though it be written in letters of gold across the sky. It is the prohibition that makes anything precious.” They should appoint him ffs. It's the best way to reduce his legendary status. I hope they appoint him pronto; it might create/expedite internal conflict.

Which is entirely what David Evans was trying to get him to do

Next time you’re at a night game let one rip. The laser beams will be easy to spot.
Will get arrested for taking down an airplane ...
