Hird has been doing public speaking rounds recently, garnering sympathy from industry insiders, talking of his struggles with depression during the drug saga. On face value, it’s hard not to feel sorry for him. No one should have to go through depression, especially because of a game. However, if you’re of the opinion that Hird is a sociopath, it seems as though he has been carefully manipulating public opinion and that of industry insiders.

We’ve heard many times since his time out of the game, that he still harbours coaching aspirations. Mainly through Mark Robinson. Now he’s returning to AFL, albeit in a commentary capacity, one week after Essendons shocking round 1 defeat. Why now? The timing stinks.

I'm sure he doesn't have a lot of sympathy from the multitude of young footballers, their partners, and their families who's lives were turned upside down, and would no doubt still be affected by the whole saga.

I wouldn't wish depression on anyone, but it's those lives that he adversely affected along the way whom I have genuine sympathy for. I heard on one of the radio shows recently that some players and their partners are still fearful that whatever was injected into their bodies may affect their offspring.

I mean really ? Or just shocked to be caught.

Hirst got off very lightly in my opinion, his players on the other hand and running around with who knows what in their bodies with unknown side effects.

Not publicised but all players effected are getting lifetime testing and health monitoring by AFL.

How is it possible that this man who has personally tarnished the AFL brand a number of times, is being sought after???
Where is the outrage???
It is bad enough that scum supporters are willing to see past his indiscretions but the general public can't just remain silent on this.

This should come as no surprise. The media fawned over him for much of the doping debacle & the AFL were more than happy for him to have a sabbatical in France, while still getting paid as per the terms of his coaching contract.

I remember back to the period before he became coach of the Dopers. He was part of the On The Couch panel & continually denied he had any interest in coaching, when really he was positioning himself to succeed Matty Knights as coach.

If I was Woosha I would be looking over my shoulder at every step because the narcissistic one is circling.

Met Hird years ago when I stood in line to get his autograph on a poster as a present for my brother.

He was very arrogant during the interactions I saw, and then got offended when he found out I was a Carlton supporter.

Played the poor victim even back then.

Honestly, he really is a wizard when it comes to tactics, running patterns and seeing the game a head of time.

I enjoyed the take down of the Bombers as much as any other Carlton supporter but I’m also aware that plenty of what happened to the club and Hird he was not even involved in or knew the facts, Bomber did! The line ‘you were in charge’ doesn’t always tell the truth, hence why Doc Reid somehow survived...

I don't remember anything spectacular about his strategic nous. I remember him being a decent gameday coach, but merely following football trends in his overarching gameplan; chip around the back half when losing, switch to the vacant side at the G, switch into the corridor during transition.

But then, like I said, his legacy is tainted by the saga, so my memory for his coaching is probably not clear. Do you have a clear example that you can remember of something he did that proves otherwise?

Given Hirds tactics largely consisted of relying on Jobe to win the ball & everyone else charging forward (aka u12 footy) - safe to say that goreds & I have differing interpretations of tactical genius.
Everyone deserves the chance at redemption but ultimately he was a poor coach, so while we're at it should Knights (a coach of similar standard) also be brought back?

At best you would have to accept poor leadership allowing "experimental supplements" program to be introduced and exposing his team to this.

Just a total lack of due diligence, unacceptable by any measure when players welfare is potentially at risk.
Let alone associating the club, supporters and the AFL with questionable characters and practises.

Hird can not be rehabilitated, as he never accepted any fault or accountability or even acknowledged the risks.

All we got from Hird and the Essendon hierarchy was the the Sgt Shultz position....we know nothing.
And an arrogant challenge.... prove that we did wrong.

This is an abysmal saga on any level.

Hird is not a fit and proper person to lead any organisation, or be in a position of influence.
