Also mentioned Jamo has left due to work, we want to name a leadership group and possibly co-captains. Prudden has shoulder surgery so it’ll be a slow start this year for him.

Still haven’t seen anything official about Hayes though.

Barry was over the hill and the others rarely played. I assume that we probably prefer DeSteiger to Staley as the second ruck also.

I know Wiz was keen on Trusler as a rookie type, wonder if there is more to it than just having him run around for Footscray this year... Good mix though, another strong year I hope for the 'Scray.

Good get I think. He has really good goal sense and is quick so he can pressure opponents which Footscray needed last year. Has some magic about him so could become an AFL player.

We have taken a few that have just missed out on the draft over the years. Probably a strategy of sort to keep an eye on some young players.

Aren't we also going after Mitch Podhajski?

Really disapointing we are not supporting local footballers as our top up players so our VFL team could actually mean something for our area
I would much rather we get the best players we can, than make token local selections and cost us games. If local footballers are good enough, they'll be picked up by a team but VFL is still a competition, and should be treated as such.

Did that in the 60s , 70s , 80s with very limited success. While other clubs were recruiting from far and wide including the Ammos and interstate we were giving games to FDL players that in the end were not good enough.
Some were like Smith Kolyniuk Dempsey Sandilands Hawkins etc but many weren't.

How many of our players from far and wide been a success since we reinstated our VFL side that are not part of our coaching and development group?

BTW I am in no way saying all our top up should be local, far from it. However, in watching our top ups since 2014 as well as being involved in Division 1 in local level, there are as good as players at local level than at least 50% of our top ups. What percentage of our top up players are actually local this year? Last season it was 2 of 22

Also in the 60's, 70s and 80's the VFL was the panacea of football. This is now the AFL where there is no reflection at all between team names and the area's they purport to represent.

The VFL is a development league for players not making the senior AFL team as well as an opportunity for those either younger or later developing mature aged players not drafted. Surely in this competition we should provide some bias towards our own providing their is no clear ability differential. Other than watching our AFL drafted players develop I have limited interest in our VFL side as there is limited connection to our area.

Steve Kreteuk, Brad Johnson and Scotty West were pretty goood too. Missed on some too, like Mathew Lloyd amongst them.

Lloyd played in the Essendon League but that was during the draft era so he could have gone anywhere. Johnson was drafted. He could have been selected by anyone before our pick but luckily he slipped to us.
More referring to the guys we picked up from the FDL , pre 1988, who played a lot of good reserves footy but weren't quite good enough in the seniors.

Footscray coach Steve Grace has revealed the VFL club is likely to appoint co-captains this season following the retirement of Jordan Russell.

The decorated defender shared the captaincy with Mark Austin at the Dogs in 2015 and ’16 before officially taking on the job solo last year.

However, Austin managed only 17 games for Footscray in the two years he was co-captain as Russell played in two premiership-winning sides (2014 and ’16), earned two VFL Team of the Year selections and claimed a best-and-fairest in a successful four-year stint at Whitten Oval.

In a blow, reigning best-and-fairest Nick Jamieson — who would have been a contender for the role of skipper — has departed because of work commitments.

“It’ll be a different model to what it’s been over the past years, where we’ve only pretty much named the one captain and not a leadership group,” said Grace, who is preparing for his second season at the helm.

“This year there’s likelihood that there’s possibly co-captains and there’ll be a four or five-man leadership group below that. We’re trying to grow the breadth of depth of leadership with a young group.”

Grace said the top leadership roles would be given to members of Footscray’s VFL-listed crop, pointing to the difficulty an AFL-listed player would have taking on the role given the extra commitments at the top level.

The Dogs have secured former Essendon and Port Adelaide forward Angus Monfries, who has crossed to the club after a 13-year AFL career.

The 211-gamer managed just one senior game for the Power in 2017, with shoulder issues and soft tissue complaints hampering his bid for regular AFL selection.

He missed all of 2016 as a result of bans handed to 34 Essendon players over the doping saga.

But Monfries has been training with Footscray since the second week of pre-season and will take on an assistant coaching position and a part-time role at the Western Bulldogs in addition to his playing duties.

It is expected the 30-year-old will make a significant contribution on the field after the Dogs progressed to the semi-finals last season.

“It’s not just what we expect — it’s what he expects. He’s got high expectations,” Grace said.

“He’s an impressive young guy. Very affable … he’s got a great rapport with the young players already.

“He’s always been a smart player. We know he’ll be a great asset to our VFL program, but he’ll also be a really good game-day asset for our AFL young forwards. There’s benefit to both programs.”

Josh Prudden will play for Footscray after being delisted by the Western Bulldogs but an off-season shoulder reconstruction means he is likely to be a “slow-starter” to 2018.

Rueben William (Brisbane Lions), Lachlan Sullivan (St Kevin’s), Aaron Trusler (Sandringham Dragons), Dennis Symeopoulos (Old Xaverians) and ex-Collingwood rookie Lachlan Smith (Kyabram) have signed on.

Jordan Staley, Shaun Wyatt, Jayden Foster, Anthony Barry and Gabe Hamilton have departed.

Footscray will start its campaign its campaign against Sandringham on April 7.

I believe Footscray play Boxhill last night, lost by 70 points at Whitten. No reports on here, did no one go? I didn't even know it was on. Who played?

Was 14 to 20 at quarter time, the final score was 19 to 89.

5pts in 3/4 of footy, what the actual feck?!!!!

Vermont's Robbie McComb trying his luck with the Footscray Bulldogs in the VFL. The Dogs have also locked in Cody Henness (Gippsland Power) and Nayef Hamad (Spotswood).

McComb is scum and shame we went after him
