Chaplin a definite out?

Yeah, HS reporting we are forced to make at least 3 changes, with Morris suspended, Conca injured, and Chaplin not recovering from his Concussion in time.

OUT: Morris (Susp), Conca (Inj.), Chaplin (Conc.)
IN: Vlastuin, Batchelor, one of A. Edwards, Nahas or Arnott.

Given Ross Lyon's congested, physical game plan, I'd go with Arnott. I reckon it would suit him, as well as Vlastuin, who both have some mongrel about them.

I would like to see something like this.

FB(Vlastuin) Rance Petterd
HBHouli Grimes Newman
CDeledio Martin Grigg
HFKing McGuane Knights
FF(A Edwards) Riewoldt Vickery
RMaric Tuck Cotchin

I(Helbig)JacksonS Edwards Nahas

Would be very surprised if we won this. We don't match up well on Freo, their midfield spread is so deep and we've never gone well against their structures.

Our game against Freo at Subi last year was our most comprehensive beating for the year, we were just dominated.

Pav out is pretty big though.

Except when we beat them in 2009, 10 and 11 when we were significantly crapper than we are now....

I think the thing about tucky is he isn't irreplaceable anymore. Lonergen, helbig, Arnott, even vlastuin can replace him and play very similarly. Sure, might be a bit of short term pain. But plenty of long term gain
Experience is still invaluable in our squad. Yes u could replace Tuck with one of those guys but I reckon we lose far more than we gain.

With Conca out for a month I'm really worried now. Depth getting majorly tested.

Didnt play last week at all so he shouldnt be considered. (unless he was out for personal reasons, then he would get a call up)
Jack Watts didn't play the week before last then came straight back in :D

Wouldn't think we would be dropping Ellis with two backs and a mid rotation out, Petterd on the last line worries me too.

I would think Batch or Dea come in for Chaplin, Ellis starts in Morris place (probably on Ballantyne) and Helbig or Vlas come in and wear the vest to replace Conca. No Pav also makes Chaplins out a little easier to manage.

If Edwards can match last weeks game in the VFL with another bag then he could be a good inclusion vs the cats and make there defenders a little more accountable.

I reckon Knights and Helbig are playing for the same role so Knights better do something quick with Helbig impressing at the VFL and if he gets an opportunity this week it could come down to this weeks game to see who stays the following week. Likewise Petterd down back needs to start to reward the side with blokes like Dea and Batch pushing for a regular spot in the 22 and Morris (and probably Chaplin) only out for a week. These two new recruits offer a bit but so do some kids we have been developing now for a few years.

The bad news on Conca saves Tuck for this week, although I don't think he would have been dropped (yet). The red vest last week was the message and I think the new sliding rule affects his game. Subi is not a place you want to go to without players to cover midfield rotations - there SHOULD be a lot of them. Losing Conca is a big out, but Vlas will cover his role this week.

Players down on form last week had better find form this week. Opportunities to beat Freo without their Captain and first ruck don't come very often, so passengers from last week need to pick up their game - Grigg, Jackson, Newman, Tuck and Pettard - Although Pettard might be dropped. I liked Knight's contribution last week, and I hope he settles into a role within the gameplan.

Out - Chaplin (Inj), Conca (inj), Morris (sus), Pettard (omit)
In - Bachelor, Helbig, Edwards, Vlastiun

Reward for effort promotes Edwards. Accuracy in front of goal is a problem. Of the limited opportunities Freo will give us, we need to be accurate. Subi is a big ground, so there is room for Jack, McGuane, Vickery and Edwards. It will stretch their backline. McGuane and Jack are good once the ball hits the ground. I'd give Vickery more time in the ruck this week, so he won't be forward all day. Green Vest to Helbig. Ellis should be a started. Vlas to debut - Big ground to start your career, but I think he will thrive.

Bachelor will be good on the intercept, and there are no gorillas to be worried about this week.

If we address the accuracy in front of goal and the tackle count, I think we are a chance. Score early and remove the crowd from the game.

Be shocked if Helbig played this week. He's coming off a 5 day turnaround after playing a full game in which in the second half there were NO rotations. Vlastuin, Dea, Batchelor, Nahas and White were all given shorter game time so if there are any replacements they would come out of these 5. For Helbig to play would be an indictment on our player management.

I'm backing Dimma to stick with the standard structures and maybe inject a bit of extra foot speed to use the big Subi space.

Batchelor for Chaplin. Batch plays both tall and medium and is a good interceptor.

Helbig for Conca. Helbig can play HB and midfield (third rotation) and is in very good form (says Tim Clarke).

Dea for Morris. It's time for Dea to show that he can make the grade as a defender/midfielder. Walters and Ballantyne would be a good test of his agility and smarts. (Newman, Petterd, Ellis and Helbig will also be looked at for guard duty on Walters and Ballantyne.)

I would also not be surprised if Nahas and White find their way in to the team (possibly at the expense of King and Knights), but Dimma may baulk at that given the unsettling effect of such a large number of changes.

Finally, Tigger is due for his debut, but I think he might have to wait one more week.

You make a good point about Helbig's management.

That stengthens the possibility of White getting a game IMO.

He could be used in a run with role on Hill, as well as a linebreaker on a wing or flank.

Think again

I can see the value of playing him as a sub given his X-factor and obvious quality, but our specific needs in defence and the midfield seem to make it difficult to free up a spot for him (given the need for experience and a big tank).

Happy to be proven wrong.

I am really looking forward to him playing and ripping it up.
