Are we coming third this season? I'm not so confident on that as we may have witnessed the moment that the injuries have become too much to bear.

Hately in a normal draft, I'd agree he would. This however, is not a normal draft and there is multiple players with his traits/skillset. The joy of being an SA player in this case is he is the most likely to slide (due to how TAC cup ends up being fresh in the mind when it comes to drafting).
Normally Id agree with you but Hately/Luko/Rankine arent playing ressies or u18s. Theyre really contributing in the seniors in roles that arent really made to develop them rather than win games of footy.

Dont get me wrong I want them to slide but recruiters cant forget what the SA lads are doing this year.

Hopefully there are a few vic kids that dominate the champs and go up the order ala a Oliver etc

Agreed, although even with a few high picks we will find a way to sell them of like last year on 2 picks for Gibbs (im not satisfied we won on this) or earlier when we use a high second on Menzel.

I'm pretty satisfied we did seeing how Carlton is doing, and that Gibbs has performed admirably whilst everyone else has dropped by flies.

Trade was 10, 16, and 73 for Gibbs, their 2nd this year* (currently 19), their 3rd this year* (currently 38) and 77

So in essence if everything stays the same, we got a top line mid for pick 10, a 4 pick downgrade (and in a stronger draft), a 3rd rounder in a stronger draft and 77 used to upgrade a rookie I believe

At worse that trade is break even, and that is if you really don't rate Gibbs, but we've won the deal rather comfortably barring a miracle involving Carlton winning.

* At current time

Edit: 77 not 70

I don't think SANFL performance is rated as highly as you believe, unless of course they light it up something crazy. Beyond that there is a level of out of sight, out of mind; especially seeing that history hasn't been kind to SANFL developed talent (It is finally changing, but there was a good decade that it was an absolute wasteland).

The main thing that'll dictate their draft position is really the U18 championships, and in a very strong draft, it's going to take an amazing championship to keep the hype on Hately seeing there are 2-3 Victorians with a very similar profile.

I think we also gave them our 2nd round pick this year, didn't we? So effectively downgraded our 2nd to their 3rd?

I'm still OK with it - I feel a bit ill when I think about how we'd be travelling this year if you take Gibbs out of the side along with all the others we're missing.

Yup, missed that part. Still at that point it's just steak knives.

It's been rather lucky he's been durable, seeing it's likely our situation would be worse without him. I'm just hoping getting the others back will truly allow him to shine though.

We also gave them our 2018 3rd rounder as well

I suppose the fear is fully in that lisfranc injury, and that there is a chance he may never come back to the same level that he was currently operating at.

I'm purely on the fence here, seeing I only want him to stay if we have full confidence he'll recover; I certainly don't trust the opinion of the people answering that question either.
Sam Kerr had a Lisfranc injury about 4 years and and now she's a top 5 female player in the world... It can be over come

I don't know if you can be that happy about the prospect of Sloane staying at this point of time. Foot injury that could be career limiting (especially with a fitness staff that are horribly inept), struggles with a tag and a likely tier one compo contract. Not exactly conducive of happiness.

Happiness comes once you see the contract and if it is a good deal to us, but there does need to be weariness here.
Why would a team pay him that much if we were happy to lose him.

If his foot is that bad and he leaves then the monetary offer will likely be an end of first rounder.

Sloane hasn't been the same player ever since he got a hard tag for the first time.

I think he will sign on but it has as much to do with lack of interest from other clubs.

He is a great player but if you were another club given his age, injury and other big names on the market, I just don't think you could make a huge offer to him. All clubs would love him but I don't think he is as bigger target now as he might have been 12 months ago.
