Can't win with some of you blokes, you scream out for Rankine (93% T.O.G. 30 disposals 8 clearances 4 score involvements), Soligo (76% T.O.G. 24 disposals 3 clearances 4 score involvements) Dawson (88% T.O.G 29 disposals 4 clearances 5 score involvements) to get more on ball minutes and when they do you still find fault.

Crouch (65% T.O.G 34 disposals 5 clearances 7 score involvements). Laird (68% T.O.G. 22 disposals 3 clearances 4 score involvements).

Someone has to make way for Rankine getting so much on ball time and it's pretty obvious Crouch and Laird are making way.
Would be even better if Laird out completely and Crouch in more.

Crouch is the better inside mid by a fair margin.

Laird panics and is slow from hand to foot.

I reckon Crouch would improve with a pack to pack 90% TOG role.

Wonder how the old 8 man leadership group will look next year.

Milera has never outwardly displayed any leadership traits whatsoever and now his career is in doubt with another serious injury, so he’s out.

Smith will be lucky to even play an AFL game next year so he’s out. Laughable choice this year as it was.

Murphy ever being included was also a laugh - a fringe player who should count himself lucky to ever be selected 3 weeks in a row. Out.

Surely nobody can take “ROB the leader” seriously when he has the skills of an 8 year old and consistently fluffs his lines. Out.

That leaves:
Dawson (obviously stays as captain)
Fogarty (not sure I’m convinced on the “leadership” traits here, but he should be a great mentor for Welsh)
Keays (does have good leadership skills, but needs to ensure he’s playing within his capabilities)
Hinge (certainly a better option than Smith or Milera down back so he’s retained)

If we are a serious club, we’d be adding Rankine, Michalanney and Soligo to that mix immediately. Personally I’d leave it there and go with a 7 man group, but if we insist on 8, the logical choice for me is Nick Murray.

Doesn’t it go to show we only need one of them?

Just finished watching the replay without any spoilers although I did find out before watching it that Rankine got injured because of a notification on my phone. Was waiting the entire game for his “injury” and of course it had to be the final 10 seconds and the umpire adds insult to injury with nothing but a pure guess to make up for the mistake they made when he kicked that goal against Port.

I know the leadership group thing gets a lot of attention on here, but does it actually matter? Don't you just pick a few guys who train well or do a lot of two way running and hard efforts in game and hope that others follow their example?

Anyway if we want on field leaders my pick beyond those you mentioned would be Worrell.

Captain Dawson
Vice Captain Ben Keays
Deputy VC Michalanney

That is all.

I didn't see the game live but caught a bit on 5aa towards half time and saw some posts on here

Everyone knew we'd lose in a close one. Someone memed it and we all knew it would be true deep down.

I'm sure the players 100% feel the same way. Here we go again, that familiar feeling, good effort boys, not far away etc

The biggest miracle was us pinching one vs Carlton. Sam Berry, come on down!

Way to buck the trend.

And after witnessing this genre-changing, cultural revolution moment from a player who didn't bottle it under pressure instantly like everyone else always does... we haven't been able to kick him out of the team quick enough. A start vs Essendon, rolled ankle, never to return.

Good organisations have good leadership.

Our record under Nicks in games decided by a goal or less.

6-16-1.

That's not bad luck, that's a clear trend.
We didn't know how to close out the game today when we hit the lead.

The leaders make good decisions and execute under pressure.

Their calmness and poise spreads to the group and influences the whole team.

We need one of Crouch or Laird. And it should be Crouch

ROB seems to be the current whipping boy of the board. His ruckwork is not that bad. His marking and disposal around the ground can range from adequate to woeful.

Due to our ordinary draft picking we have no alternative to him, which is hardly his fault.

I think it matters when you have guys who have absolutely no business playing AFL football such as Brodie Smith in the leadership group, yes.

Imagine being stuck in the SANFL and watching this guy play absolutely horrendous football, and knowing you’re no hope of replacing him regardless of how you play. Nobody can convince me that 0 gamers Billy Dowling and Oscar Ryan couldn’t come in and literally from day 1, play better footy than Smith. The obsession with kicking to one on twos or going with low penetrating kicks to literally nobody is impossible to watch. He’s not a leader’s arse hole.

When we recruit a ruckman this offseason, if we keep ROB in the leadership group, will that ruckman really feel like he even has a sporting chance of displacing ROB, the almighty king of hit outs and future rocket scientist?

Same goes for Murphy - what on earth is he doing in that group when blind Freddy can see he’s not in the best 20 players at the club and is lucky to ever be selected? May as well chuck Ned in the leadership group while we’re at it if “trying hard” is the logic.

I just think it sends the wrong message. You certainly don’t need your best 8 players to be your 8 leaders. But you need it to be 8 of your best 18.

Let’s face it, 8 is stupid, and it should be 6.

Laird, Jones, McHenry, ROB, Murphy, Jones, Smith and Hamill

I've been hoping at least one of the Joneses would have come good by now <<grim smile>>.
19D/15K/4H only one tackle is serviceable but that miss for goal was critical. We do not have enough players who can nail those under tight scoreline pressure. Keays' miss was just as deflating.

I look at that list and it's just disheartening.
Laird and Smith are so much less than their former selves. I never thought I'd say this, but if I could I'd drop Smith today and never recall him from the SANFL. Then delist. He's cooked.
It doesnt help when we have a clueless coach that picks them and literally has no method for winning close games apart from 'chip it around' when what we should be doing is playing on and getting it forward, which is why we get in front in the first place. Every time we hit the front we go back in our shells and go back to why we were losing before the last qtr. Every time.
THIS; so much this.
If Nicks is sending out "Now defend"/"now attack" messages it's killing us.

Go back and replay the other 14 kicks. He was absolutely horrendous.

With these guys in the 23 we are going nowhere. Even if we replaced half of them with players with skill, we'd win today, and probably be 6 or 7 wins this season

Yeah, our method of attack is often built on the chip around and possession control game plan. When we outright attack fast when its all and nothing, we prove over and over again we are a very dangerous side.

It clearly helps at selection, no one could argue that smith and Rob haven't deserved to be dropped this year.
