Ok I've calmed down after yesterday's loss.
We definitely have the pieces to be a contender but too many duds that need to be cut.
Murphy, McHenry, Jones, ROB, Butts (he actually played well), Laird, Smith, Hberg just aren't AFL standard.
That's a 3rd of the team.

I'm so frustrated at the arrogance of the coaches, the administration. They've undone any good work they created during the rebuild years.
Unfortunately the players are set up to fail constantly.

The umpires are campaigners too.

Core midfield comparison metres gain and centre bounce attendances

Collingwood

Metres. CBAs
N Daicos 542 23
Crisp 480 22
Pendlebury 388. 25
Cameron. 207. 23
Total 1617. 93

Adelaide

Metres. CBAs
Rankine. 699. 16
Dawson. 405. 15
Soligo. 231. 19
Crouch. 132. 15
Laird. 108. 16
O’Brien 82. 23
Total
1657. 104

So Collingwood core midfield of 4 were at nearly all CBAs and got the same metres gained as our midfield which shared out the CBAs over 6 players! Crouch , laird and O’Brien all got less metres gained than their ruckman !

imagine what this would look like if we gave Collingwood number of cbas to rankine , soligo and Dawson!

We have an inefficient, bloated midfield now carrying players with little hurt factor.
You've nailed the reason we lost .....look at the mtrs gained by Crouch, Laird, and ROB ......who simply threw himself around like a wrecking ball, and out of most contests .....he maybe a smart man, but he's the dumbest footballer I've seen

Forget the last 10 min of the game .....we should never have been in that position, had we structured up correctly from the opening ......poor planning, allowing Naicos free run .....having your Capt down fwd

Laird has slowed dramatically ....Crouch is back to his ineffectual best ....if the Coach continues to structure up the same, his career is limited

I've been a big critic of Butts ....his form though, the last 2 weeks, has shown, there is a bit of light in that black tunnel

Basically the low ceiling/high floor are players who have the potential to be great, but early are inconsistent and may have games were they only rate as a 2/10.

I don't think thats correct. If you have the potential to be great - you have a high ceiling.

Think you meant high ceiling / low floor.

Who selects the midfield?

Crouch isnt the problem.

Crouch and laird in the same team is the problem..

1 of them needs to go. And, given crouch is the better player, it is the absolute hack that is Rory Laird that needs to go.

Crouch plays far better without Laird in the side.

Crouch came back into the side last year cause laird went out. Crouch looked bloody good and made the club reconsider him as he played bloody good footy. And the midfield looked instantly better cause crouch isnt a selfish accumulator.

Laird is the selfish accumulator.. a stat padder..

Watch how many times the hack calls for the footy when he isnt in a position to do something better with it than the bloke who already has it is..

Laird aims for one thing and one thing only.. to get 30+ possessions a game. He thinks thats his KPI and as long as he hits it.. all is good, he’ll be classed as a “gun footballer”..

Why?… because thats exactly the KPI this club has set for him and praised him for everytime he’s reached it.

And no.. that doesnt mean, as some are suggesting here, that laird gets moved back to half back. We have far better options than putting “kicks it to the moon and back” at half back.

Laird needs to go bavk to the sanfl.. he can accumulate his 30+ pointless possessions a week back there.

But this club wont do that.. it’ll persist with this useless hack for another 3 years.

It's difficult to describe how bad of a decision and strategy this is when the game is in this position

Butts kicks long in red to an area where there are FIVE Collingwood players in better position to get to the fall of the ball

Meanwhile out wide we have two players in the clear and the ability to work into that space (blue). It's a risky move to go corridor side but we played it safe and Collingwood won the ball and delivered it back into the corridor
Butts was solid defensively, but he really struggles to take an attacking option when disposing... & often takes his time.

Very different to Keane.

We need to get him to give short to a teammate quickly.

Never wanted to say it but, Tex is absolutely cooked. Not a patch on his mobility he had last year.
Still has the skills and footy smarts, and still the most sublime kick of the football, but his body is just getting old for AFL footy. Will be his last season for sure.
We need to be smart about managing him with games off, rather than playing him sore.

Yeah, that was probably harsh. Lots of mistakes early but his second half was much better.
Hinge surprised me last night.
I've always thought of him as an outside player, a connector, a lesser Dawson, someone who delivers the ball forward, but last night he got in and under a few times and hunted his own ball strongly.
The goal he kicked from the Tex handball was a boomer  --- the kind of goal Smith used to kick for us from out there .

Leadership is what Dawson and Rankine did in that last quarter,.

This is irrefutable.

Dawson we got right as the captain, the other leaders sets a terrible standard of what is acceptable.

When the game is on the line we want leaders who embrace the pressure and most importantly execute.

This sets the standard for the next generation of what it takes to lead and win.

Hygiene factors are not leadership qualities, perhaps in Primary school, but not in a professional sport.

My two takeaways were:
  • Gee he does look kind of pissed, I’ve not seen that before.
  • Gee I am sick of hearing about how close we are to being good but not actually being good.

He's backed in the players who are letting him down so he's pissed at them and thinks there's no other way forward than them getting better

It was wild management to have Crouch off the ground in the last few minutes instead of Laird

Another game we got ruined by intercepting defenders. Darcy Cameron basically plays that role for them sitting down the line and took 6 contested marks.

Our season really ended when Thilthorpe went down.

Oh and Nankervis.

Great composure. Not just belongs at the level, but showing he can dominate.

Creates time and space. Never rushes.

Even when under pressure he seems to have time. Doesn't always work but you can see he has something.
