If they did that for every run, they'd find heaps of runs per game exceeding 15m. Heaps.
This is the issue... many players run a little more than 15m every game... yet they wait til the last play of the day to make a call.

This appears to be a consistent theme when we play the Pies & the game is on the line.

It's become too frequent to be a coincidence by the VAFL...

Was the Schultz goal actually a goal? At the ground they just showed a still picture of it touched over the line. I'd like to have seen the frame prior to the one they showed.
They line them up

The front on footage showed them exactly when ROB made contact with the ball

The aligned frame from side on was the one which shows it was over the line

Hey Nicks - re Keays and Jones, lets wait until we blow a final before we move on these low on composure and skill hacks.
Murphy - leadership quality - lol - no one epitomoses the Adelaide Football Club quite like this hack.
McHenry and Sholl - witches hats.
O'Brien - just a garbage ruckman
Rankine - superstar. He alone almost (almost) makes you want to renew your membership in 2025
Crouch - given some of the garbage we have gifted games to over the last 2 years he had been handled horrendously. An honest, hard-nosed genuine footballer.
Nankervis - He has a future. Love the way he takes the game on.

He’s not even fit to tie Jonathon Griffin’s boot laces.

To be fair to ROB, he might be better tap ruckman than both Lucas Herbert and Matthew Golding who had the job is 1999 when Rehn and Marsh both did knees, and Pitman missed games.

I’d hate to see ROB’s hit outs to disadvantage statistic! There is no variation to his ruck work, he never does a deft back flick to a player behind, he never thumps it long, all we get is his small forward tap. Far too easy for good midfielders to read the likely outcome and to intercept it on the run.

Matt Clarke wasn’t that much chop as a player, but at least his rucking skills were sublime and was a genuine hit out to advantage star.

As for ROB’s handballing and particularly kicking skills … he looks like a very low grade Adelaide Footy League player. I’d suggest that South’s Craig utensil was a better kick!

How disturbing to hear it reported that we trained for this particular scenario during the week.
It’s.
The.
Coach.

We got in front and did exactly what we have been trained to do. Play slow down the line.
It’s dumb. We have no pack marking players, so why kick long and slow to a pack?
We lose these games because we are coached to play dumb football

Don’t rate nicks but I don’t buy it, we had multiple opportunities to seal it, players aren’t good enough and are mentally weak

Almost everyone knows he ran too far, but the issue is that gets called play on 9/10 times.

Then to pull it out near the end of the game when players have consistently run more than 15 metres without bouncing during the game is ridiculous.

This is why fans get cranky about the umpiring.

Very much like the famous hold call against Rutten against Anthony.
Was it there? Sure. Was Tippett held the exact same way 20 times that game with no frees paid. Also yes
Not a coincidence that it was the one time it was called in the game. Would NOT have been called if Daicos had the ball

We lost because, once again, there's too many players that lack composure. Keays going for glory instead of passing off to anyone of three free players would have iced 30 seconds off the clock. Instead, it's a turnover and a coast-to-coast goal to de Goey.

That's the game, if Keays had any composure, then the free against Rankine doesn't happen.
When Nicks watches the replay does he actually notice the performance of individual players or is he just seeing the "system".

He been the coach for long enough to weed out the players that are mentally weak or not good enough. But he backs them in and refuses to learn.

Missed the game because we were out for the day. Told the wife in the morning no big deal, it's a good team so chances are we'll start slow, peg them back and hit the lead late only to suffer heartbreak. Then when we left I accidentally saw the score before skipping through a replay.

Quite the collection we're building.

Oh good this again.

He’s attended over 100 more ruck contests than anyone else, and his hitout to advantage percentage was 13th in the league last time I checked.

He also offers absolutely nothing in terms of quality of disposal.

Laird is awful.
Crouch has regressed to his norm.
Smith is absolutely cooked.

Yet we will weld these people on to the team for at least another year. We can’t help ourselves. Should be phasing them out by now
If we had a healthy list and a competent football dept, there were 8 to 10 players who played today who we should be phasing out.

I don't want Murphy in the side but as I said during the week, he's got McHenry covered with ease. Just imagine McHenry nailing that early goal. You can't can you? Your imagination literally can't even conjure what that might look like.

The umpires have never actually called it based on length. Not since the days of lace-up jumpers. It's ALWAYS been based on steps, and generally the players are allowed to get up to 19-20 steps before it actually gets called.

There are only two possibilities here. Either the umpire somehow missed that Rankine had bounced it, or else he was itching to blow the whistle and just decided to do it regardless of how far Rankine ran. There is 0% chance that he actually paid it based on the distance ran between Rankine's bounce and his kick.

Someone said earlier that that run would get let go 9 times out of 10... more like 99 times out of 100! I'm willing to bet there hasn't been a single "ran too far" call paid off 14 steps for the entire season so far.

And hell, god forbid the umpires start paying "ran too far" based on the distance they regularly pay as valid marks!

Good:

Hinge - was pushed further up ground and was great especially in the last quarter. Was playing more that outlet ball use role with no real direct opponent today and played it well, thought he was unfairly ignored at times to. That goal he kicked was fantastic, kicked it from 55 and cleared the fence easy.

Rankine - especially the 2nd half, didn’t start the best but worked his arse off to keep on coming at the opposition, such a mature performance, the ability to control that ball and dribble it through was one of the more epic goals in our club’s history yet it is wasted in a loss.

Dawson - as usual lifted the team and was a hard matchup all day, it’s a hard call because you can argue when he’s afforded space like he is when moved out of the middle it is nice and has time to try to spot up inside 50s but it just hurts the midfield especially at CBA’s. Him being moved out of the middle to accommodate Laird is still a shit Nicks move and impacts the team negatively.

Crouch - Thought he was bloody tough today, fought a one man battle a lot of the time with little support from Soligo or Laird down in the trenches today. Rightly criticised him last week for leaving his direct opponent open at stoppages last week but thought he tried a bit harder to tighten up on that today.

Defence was good again, Butts continued his strong form since his return, Keane, Nankervis & Michalanney probably weren’t against much at times but held up pretty well. Ridiculous Nank was sub last week.

Murphy’s 1st half was ok

Bad:

O’Brien - horrendous footballer, he should not be a professional sportsman simple as that. Darcy Cameron was laughing as his opponent today. Why do his teammates give him the ball?

Jones - he’s just not a good AFL footballer, tried hard today more than the last few weeks but whether it’s to do with poor coaching or bad development he is just untrustworthy with ball in hand, like Ned everything seems to happen at 100 miles per hour to him.

Laird - he deserves to be dropped, it’s sad to see but he’s just a horrible handbrake and liability going the other way in the midfield. It is incredibly frustrating watching him out there, that turnover kick into 50 in the 3rd was vomit inducing.

Walker/Fogarty/Himmelberg - just got nothing much from them at all, thought their last quarter was putrid, all of them fumbling balls below their knees, Fogarty kept slipping over, thought all the time one of them had a mismatch and never could really take advantage of it. Thought Walker’s decision making was so bad today, especially late that underground handball straight back to Collingwood was a killer, scary if his last 2 weeks are a preview of what’s to come in the future for the club.

This Impact Sub garbage ‘innovation’ by Nicks - take a good long hard look at yourself Nicks and give yourself a punch in your bald scone, taking Sholl off at that stage when you need run was stupidity, Smith, Cook, Laird, Jones or ROB all should’ve been off before butter boy Sholl.

Murphy’s 2nd half where he showed his true colours yet again.

Ugly:

Corpse of Brodie Smith - not even he knows how to pretend to be playing football out there anymore, showed his experience today by sprinting hard for a couple of kick-ins today. The next horse he buys with the money he’s stolen from this club better be better than his last one.

Pretty sure Cook and Rachele left the MCG and got a Açai bowl and kombucha down the road at halftime and only got back at 3qtr time. Some shall we say ‘interesting’ displays by both of these talented individuals.

Keays - was at his absolute worst with ball in hand today, like ROB it should get to the point like today when his teammates should ignore him and only used as a last resort like he himself seems to be doing. Kicking has totally regressed again from when it was borderline ok to start the season. Again we see the lowly peasant trying to be the hero and failing.

Needing run on the MCG and Ned ‘f-ing’ McHenry is your sub 🤮

Nicks choosing to tag for the first time this year and it being a 35 year old Pendlebury 😂

Nicks backing in his ‘System’ at stoppages in that first half, Daicos would love Nicks’ system.

Holding a lead late in the last quarter 2 weeks in a row against teams who are missing a chunk of players through injury and not being able to find a way to win.

Like last week trying to shut the game down too early after hitting the lead instead of continuing to try to move the ball quickly which had got them the lead.

Only coming alive yet again after conceding 5+ goals straight.

Random thoughts:

Honestly why are they playing Will Hamill? is it just a in game Brodie Smith contingency plan? Literally no long term planning at all.

When Ned did 2 don’t argues, made me laugh.

Nicks bingo going off in the post-game presser with the “you’re never as good or never as bad as you think you are” line being rolled out, dude has no idea. He did look angry today but of course it didn’t translate to anything remotely interesting, he’s such a bland individual and coach both on-field and off-field.

Why does Crouch have such low TOG consistently?

Can he not physically run out a game anymore, or his lack of run and spread become an increasingly high liability through the course of a game. That must have a huge impact on rotations for the other players in the midfield have to play more minutes to cover for him.

If he can’t play 80% TOG week in week out then he shouldn’t be playing!
Can't win with some of you blokes, you scream out for Rankine (93% T.O.G. 30 disposals 8 clearances 4 score involvements), Soligo (76% T.O.G. 24 disposals 3 clearances 4 score involvements) Dawson (88% T.O.G 29 disposals 4 clearances 5 score involvements) to get more on ball minutes and when they do you still find fault.

Crouch (65% T.O.G 34 disposals 5 clearances 7 score involvements). Laird (68% T.O.G. 22 disposals 3 clearances 4 score involvements).

Someone has to make way for Rankine getting so much on ball time and it's pretty obvious Crouch and Laird are making way.

Bounce should be abolished from the game, it's quite pointless. Only makes players dispose of the ball even quicker. If a player can hold it in their hands and avoid their opponents, they should be able to without worrying about bouncing an oblong shaped ball on some grass.
I tend to agree. I like the idea of it but when it is rarely officiated properly, it only builds frustration for players and spectators.

But, it's just yet another 'open to interpretation rule' that the AFL can't get enough of, so it ain't going anywhere.
