Bit of a review of the game and info on Buzza.

From the wilderness of his pick last year, all I could want from him currently is development and fitness.

And from the reports of the game and that article, he's ticked both boxes. Still a massive road to travel but if he's ding the work, making progress and improving his skills - its all we can ask at this stage.

The Cult of Buzza has started!

Ready this ..it reminded me of the early days of Cam Mooney as well. I remember Mooney as someone early who looked best around the ball , that final V Melb was one his best games..but as he developed he really used his natural presence to lock him self in the forwardline. Its great that he s build his base and learning the game , but maybe Buzza can bring something that few others can naturally bring that presence that is a blend raw thor and football talent.

Some thoughts on the game

From the named squad Murdoch and Henry didn't play.

Narkle - Only played 3 quarters and then was taken by a member of the fitness team to warm down on an adjacent field. It was great to see him start in the square from the out set and attack the contest.Has good speed to accelerate from the contest and mostly displayed good skills. Was caught a couple of times but the pleasing thing was he was at least trying to take the game on.Overall the most impressive of the listed players for mine.

Buzza - Was very good around the contest willing to follow up his ruck work and tackle. Took a couple of very strong one grab marks and continued to bring the ball to ground from marking contests inside 50 ( I'll come back to this later). Also very vocal on-field and in the huddle at the quarter time breaks.

Hayball - Quite impressive in the first half but faded in the second with a poor turnover resulting in a goal in the 3rd quarter. Has a fantastic leap on him and used it a few times to climb high in a pack situation and spoil the contest. Left his opponent to attack off half back and help set up a goal in the first quarter.

Bews - I thought improved as the game went on. Floated in and out of the contest in the first half without having much of an impact on the game. His second half he was a different player pushing up into the midfield and doubling back into the 50 to find space. Attacked the ball well and was rewarded for his improved effort with 2 goals.

Black - Pleasing to see him hit the marking contest hard and at least bring ball to ground if he couldn't mark it. Used his pace well to separate from his opponent a few times on the lead but the delivery was poor to him. Followed up in the forward line applying pressure which was good. Got one goal from Narkle who could have had a shot himself from 30 metres out but centered it to Black and the other from sexton who kicked long and found him over the back and he strolled into goal. I was more pleased in what he did without the ball.

Gardner - Lacked support and was caught one out quite alot with the half backs zoning up and Collingwood getting it out the back. Won about half of his contests and did okay overall.

O'Connor - Was quite sure handed when he had the ball but as expected was more mindful of shutting down his opponent than trying to create at this stage. He is a lot taller than i thought and moved very well for his size.

VFL listed players - Atkins first half was excellent and Sexton moving into the centre in the 3 quarter was the main reason we were up by 3 goals at the start of the last. I was also impressed with Pat Dowling Geelong Falcons boy thought he moved well and made good decisions with the ball in hand.

Forward Line - The pleasing thing was that Buzza and Black competed hard in the air even when caught out of position to at least bring the ball to ground. The disappointing thing is that we had no one at their feet and the ball was continually rebounded by Collingwood.

Spoke to Henry and he thinks he will play VFL next week.

Had Jones standing next to me on the fence and asked him when he will be back and he hopes the North Ballarat game. He then sat down next to me and we chatted about his preseason for about 10 minutes. A great kid and is hanging to play because in his words " I love to tackle". He mentioned they found a fluid build up in his foot and he had to ease off and has only now started to build back up again. Was finding the structures not as daunting as others as he had been taught AFL structures at North Ballarat by the senior coach Fitzy.

Both Guthrie brothers were there to watch Josh who played quite well in parts but turned the ball over once in the second that resulted in a goal.

Overall Narkle was the main stand out.

I think we have a decent shot at the VFL flag this year.
I think most people knew Narkle could come in and could play at a decent VFL standard this year. I think Z. Guthrie could as well.
Hardly any of our good GFL players have left from last year, Stewart, House & Abbott are all doing AFL standard training,
Atkins will be pushing to get drafted and Sexton should go up another level.
You'd think GHS would play most games and If Buzza can be solid at least most weeks we can really improve on last year.
Good year to go watch the VFL.

And like previous years... I agree and will be doing my best to follow it from here.

It's gotta be hard. Live streaming grrrrr.
Even radio FFS.

VERY frustrating indeed.

the upside is that you can follow the oppositon feeds for some game. Melb has Casey radio. Pies have streams. Dons have streams. Tigers had video at one point.
Ch 7 has game of the week now on replay at least.

GFC has a twitter feed a few times a quarter. Lets hope they get resourced appropriately to be able to provide an upgraded service this season to the fans that want to be involved.

Should be a good year and would luv to be able to all over it. Its hard to stay awake at 2 in the morning to watch twitter updates if you get my drift.

Yeah I couldn't do it.
It's good with the other teams streams but they seem to only know their teams players and are really biased.
Would love our own stream with our own commentators who know heaps about our VFL boys etc. Would be awesome.

150% agree - we wont get it though. No resources and no funds.

Ive said for ages they could add a 5.00 VFL fee to every membership. Thats 200k and change.

Wont happen. People would IMO be happy to throw a fiver at the club for the VFL team for the season. I could be wrong.

I would happily pay it. I can't see why we couldn't work out something with Deakin or The Gordon though. Great experience for some students to put on a live stream.
They would do it for free as part of their courses. Surely we could get a sponsor to cover the rest of the costs. Couldn't be that much.

Im not local so dont know about the logistics as such but Ive thought,as you have, of the regional media and sports journo courses as places for resources.

I guess it needs the club brand to managed by non GFC employees at the point and im sure that creates nerves and tension - which I get.

But yes, macro view - im sure that there is a way to get it done cost effectively, increase the coverage and quality and reach more fans all at the same time.

And it would only have to be VFL home games. Set the infrastructure up once, and its done.

You'd think that they could do a reciprocal arrangement with the other aligned teams to provide a commentator or two for balance as well.
eg: KP VFL game - Use GFC streaming infrastructure with say Pies commentators as well to provide balance and info.

Then when at Holden centre, use Pies infrastructure and allow GFC commentators in as well.

Seems a simple model that needs a bit of tech support, infrastructure start up costs an some management.

All too hard apparently.

Good signs for Narkle. I haven't seen him live, but from the clips of him, he is not afraid to get contested footy and bust out of packs with his pace. Yeah, he's probably similar to a Christensen, and probably similar to Motlop pace when he's at full stride.

I think we will enjoy watching him.

He might only need 1 year of development in the magoo's as he was a bit older than the other players from that draft.

I have no doubt that some will scoff at this question...
But for anyone at the game, how did the jumpers look? We are yet to see the new COAR ones properly with the T-shirt being worn... when the jumper announcement happened they looked clunky and not the finished product, I am just wondering if the finished product (albeit at VFL level) looked good.

If no one thought anything of it then that is also good as it means they no doubt looked fine and fitted as they should :D

They didn't wear the t shirts. Their jumpers looked pretty standard.

Might head down after work and have a look. You'd think Cam Guthrie might have a run as well if they're looking to play him against Freo the following week.
All goes to plan you may get to see Cuthrie, Zuthrie and even Juthrie. There was an article where they confirmed they would try to play the AFL listed Guthrie brothers and Josh had a good game last week so you'd think he'd get another crack.

Geelong Cats 2017: Cam, Zach and Josh Guthrie to line up together for first time with Geelong

GEELONG VFL coach Shane O’Bree says Cam Guthrie will use Friday night’s practice match against Essendon as a full dress rehearsal for next Sunday’s AFL opener against Fremantle.

Guthrie was included in the squad to play the Bombers at Simonds Stadium alongside his two brothers, Zach and Josh.

Pretty interesting squad we have there. 3 AFL listed players, and the rest from the VFL top-up list, while Essendon have the likes of Bellchambers, Hooker, Hocking, Hartley, Howlett and Jackson Merrett named. Michael Luxford will be running out for the Bombers too.

I was hoping to see some of the new draftees on Friday night, but it looks like Zach Guthrie will be the only new face there of the AFL/Rookie listed players. Unfortunately, Motlop and the Guthrie brothers will be the only listed players to grace the turf on Friday night.

Missing from the list are:
Wylie Buzza, Jordan Cunico, Ryan Gardner, Matthew Hayball, Jack Henry, *Timm House, Jamaine Jones, Quinton Narkle, Mark O'Connor, Brandon Parfitt, (a strong round 1 chance?), *James Parsons, *Esava Ratougolea, Sam Simpson and *Ryan Abbott.

That is a fair chunk of the AFL/Rookie listed team missing from Friday night even though a number of them are missing do to *injury.
