Scott lost us that game (c.guthrie to a lesser extent).

See attached photo of o Connor marking Roughead. That was halfway through the last qr. it was not an accident. Scott actually put zuthrie and o Connor, FFS AN IRISH ROOKIE WITH 12 GAMES OF AUSSIE RULES EXPERIENCE AND 2 FEET SHORTER on their gun KEY FORWARD!! FFS SCOTT!

That is an incomprehensible monumental stuff up that cost us 4 points.

I look forward to Scott dancing around this when he gets asked in the press conference.

Also, Scott hasn’t improved our structures and deficiencies in the off season. FOR TOO LONG has he twiddled his thumbs and not fixed our game plan and deficiencies.

Sack the bastard. I’ve had enough.
Nice melt it’s Rd2 hardly the end of the world

One of the things I love about our game is that rarely the umpires can impact the result of the game (cf soccer). Yes there were decisions missed, but there were other opportunities/mistakes by players throughout the game that equally could affect the final result. So, no whinging about umpires.

What Harthorn do well (IMO):
  • Pressure and press, they continually creep up on the mark (only penalised once) and forced us to kick to a contest.
  • Back each other up. It looks like the bounce of the ball favours them, but in reality they work hard to cover all the options so it looks like there are more of them on the field.
  • The keep the ball moving forward, then coupled with the above, a 'lucky' bounce will find one of their players in the clear.
  • They move the ball toward the centre in the forward half, and look for players in the clear, for easier shots on goal.
  • Their top six aren't as good as our top six, but their bottom six is better than ours, and the middle group are pretty even, and across the board they are well drilled and well coached.

Stanley....

I’m just a little lost for words

Is there a conversation needed that’s started by Stanley where he says sorry coach, I’m just not sure how to ruck
Chris Scott “ Jump.... and tap the ball”
Stanley * blank expression.
Chris “Jump... and tap the ball”
Stanley... “what was the second one?”
Chris “tap the ball”
Stanley “right.... and the first one again?”

Also it's hard to believe the club actually wanted to get rid of Menzel. He is one of the only on our side that looks consistently dangerous i50. With Hawkins struggling to hit the scoreboard, Menzel is our maim target.
The club did NOT want to get rid of Menzel. They simply want to give him a year by year contract, which is reasonable.
He is a star, and we love him, but we need to see this form in 20 weeks time as well, and that's where he loses ground in contract negotiations. Plus the undoubted risk. But we'd be >/8 goals worse off without him.

Would love to know the selectors thought process in bringing in Stanley for Smith.
Smith quiet and beaten last week, but had a very solid 2017 which included a strong record of bouncing back well after being beaten the week prior. Stanley bobbed up with 2 goals, but overall he was badly beaten in the ruck contests and around the ground.

Dangerfield, Ablett and Selwood all had some good moments throughout the match; my biggest concern with running these three through the middle is a lack of defensive accountability, especially in open play. They’ll man up and knuckle down when required at the stoppages, but are conspicuously invisible when the opposition have time and space. This – plus the inability of Parsons, Gregson and Cockatoo to curtail Hawthorn’s rebound effectiveness - led to the under-manned defense being absolutely besieged in the 2nd quarter in particular.

I actually though all of Tuohy, Stewart and Kolodjashnij held up reasonably well considering the amount of forward entries Hawthorn generated, but they were eventually worn down as the game progressed. In the 2nd half Tuohy was reduced to speculative barrells up the middle, which did in fact come off more than they didn't - it's not really a percentage play though and smacked of desperation

Parsons, Cockatoo, Gregson all very quiet, Menegola struggled to get involved too. O’Connor and Henry looked a bit overawed. Menegola and Parsons stuck with it and both were reasonably influential in the last quarter, but overall a poor return from our half-forwards. Fogarty bobbed up with a goal but was pretty quiet too.

Blicavs was required to multi-task, keeping an eye on Tom Mitchell at stoppages at times (along with Selwood) and then struggling to combat a rampant McEvoy in the ruck. He was ok, effort was good; but not overly effective.

Tim Kelly provided the perfect mix of run and grunt to help minimize the damage through the middle of the ground, and once again Menzel looked sharp up forward despite limited opportunities.

Once Roughead started to exploit the lack of Harry Taylor (or Lonergan) to assert himself in a rare show of his ability against Geelong we were really up against it.

I thought we did fairly well to get within a kick at the end of the game, Hawthorn's F50 entries and scoring shots suggested the margin could have been a bit wider.

Back to the drawing board; we were lucky to come away with 4 points against the Demons and probably shouldn't have got quite so close against Hawthorn.

With Smith, Taylor and Henderson out we're slightly undermanned at this early stage in the season, but if we're fair dinkum we'll need to address their absence (in Smith's case a simple recall will do the trick) quick smart. Duncan would definitely have helped.

Fair play to Hawthorn, they've been on the end of many close defeats at our hands; today was a little bit of payback in a tight match and they very much deserved the 4 points.

The backend of the second quarter was when Stanley frustrated me the most today.

The Hawks kept peppering the goals but luckily(?) for us they kept kicking behinds. We were having problems trying to clear the ball from our defensive half, we kept getting it outside the 50, the Hawks would win the ball back and kick it back in.

What frustrated me with Stanley is that he was positioning himself about 1.5 kicks from the goal square, unless we kicked to ourselves and he would then be within range. What pissed me off is that he wouldn't lead or make himself a target - he would stand beside the shortest Hawks player around, leaving McEvoy on his own, and as such McEvoy was able to impact the contest each time the ball was kicked in there direction (which was basically every kick in during that period).

His unwillingness to present as a target and then match up on his opponent was frustrating and should be addressed.

Even more frustrating because towards the end of the 3rd quarter when the Hawks kicked out from behind, he showed more intent to impact the contest then when we were kicking out.

Plus, for a guy who is apparently one of the strongest at the club, he got pushed aside in ruck contests too easily. He would do the right thing and take the front spot, but McEvoy would initiate body contact and take the front position without much of a contest from Stanley.

Stanley is an utter enigma.
Q1 we see the running, jumping, footballing Stanley who (at least) breaks even with McEvoy.
Then, some time in Q2, he is kidnapped and replaced by a 2-metre high air puppet.
If it hadn't been windy, he wouldn't have moved at all.

We are horrendous defensively. And im not talking about the backline i thought they were ok given the saturation of ball inside defensive 50.

When the opposition wins the clearance around the grounds watching our mids and high fwds ball watching and refusing to try to shut down the ball is horrible.

We allowed 35 scoring shots. And if they hadnt hit the post 4 times would have been a solid loss

Lucky to have not lost by 5 goals.

If we dont find some sort of defensive structure when we dont have the ball around the grounds our backline wont be good enough to stop scores of 110+ each week.

Better fix that real quick.

Like everyone, I enjoyed the Cats spirited comeback in that last quarter and how many times have we seen us win a game like that by a point, so statistically, we had to lose one eventually. Paddy & Gazza were amazing in the last quarter. Gregson was beaten/stuffed it up every time he went near the ball, and should be dropped. Zuthrie should never have been on Roughhead, but shit happens.

A lot of problems in the back line, which everyone can see. Some of the young blokes were shown up today, which is to be expected at this stage of their careers. On to next week.

Not here to troll but you can't honestly believe this umpires are what got you back in the game the first place

I think it did start to even up but there were a few umpiring mistakes which were more costly to the cats. But I do think the hawks were the better team and deserved the win...I just wished the umpires would make less mistakes. Btw, surely razor ray is a hawks supporter...am I right?

Learnt my lesson last week, will return when everyone is more rational lololol

All I can add, apart from saying that. . .living in the Bush. . .a darling friend brought me gaspers + more Bubbles. . .to soothe my despair. . .what a darling, who has such empathy.

Don't bash me but Murdoch was better than Gregson last week and should've played today, he wouldnt have been pushed off the ball as easy as Gregson was by Smith. Thurlow, Murdoch and Smith should have played instead of O'Connor Spudley and Gregson. Forward set up will cost us finals this year, it's garbage.

Stanley. Except the guy pictured actually puts his arms up to contest.

Good points.
And it is a good thing playing these kids in a stand alone game on Easter Monday.
Henry was a bit overawed, but we are getting games into kids.
Whoever played on Rioli had a win.
Our holy 3 were good= Selwood a bit down after 1/2 time from where I sat.
In fact where we sat was horrible- inescapable sun in eyes for 3Q.
Hawkins seems a shadow of his fearsome best.
Hawks rebuild did not take long- they are still very skilled with disposals.
We lack Harry and Hendo.
Duncan and SS will aid our fate as well.
All in all, an honourable loss.

Agree.

Probably about 5-6 goals because of henderson and Taylor not in the side. Not to mention the marking rebounds they would have provided.

Our midfield was beaten when it was much better than theirs.

Our midfield really lifted to a level I felt theirs couldn’t go with in that last quarter. The whole side went another level the hawks just couldn’t match.

I said at the start of the last quarter to the Geelong fan next to me “ Stewart on Roughead will cost us the game” and it did. This scenario never happens with a fit side.

It had a very similar feeling to the loss we had in 2009 to St Kilda at Telstra dome.

The way we came back from such a position in the last quarter to almost snatch defeat from the jaws of life gave me supreme confidence we where the better of the two.

There are losses that give you that feeling. Today was one of them

Give that man a 5 year deal.
According to the tissues we've approached his management with the view to an extension, PO. They've said not at the moment.

Scott gets criticised for not being creative and pro-active. When he is those things, he still gets criticised.

At ½ time I thought we were in for a thrashing. Terrific fight back by the team to make the Dawks work for it.

We need to get dahlhaus. Sending stanley to the dole queue and pissing off GHS will cover his wage. He will take gregsons spot who is no better than a depth player

Kelly has gone straight past menegola. He might not be in our best team by the end of the year.
Yeah coz Dahlhaus is in unbelievable form. Has not played well since their flag.
