Seriously outstanding second half with what we had at our disposal.
O'Connor, Henry, Gregson, Parsons, Zuthrie, Parfitt, Kelly, Fogarty
At least 8 with very little experience.
Cocky will get better with gametime
I am so enthusiastic about this year
We have Henderson, Taylor, Scott Selwood, Duncan, McCarthy, Murdoch, Thurlow, Crameri, Zac Smith, Black and GHS as experienced options to come back into the team
We have Miers, Cunico, Ratagolea, Constable, Gardner, House as young talent also
We almost won that game off the back of this. Remarkable
STill think our best team is
Stewart Taylor Bews
Tuohy Henderson Kolo
Kelly S.Selwood Duncan
McCarthy Hawkins Crameri
Menzel Dangerfield Cockatoo
Smith Selwood Ablett
Blicavs Parfitt Parsons Menegola.
Emergencies Zuthrie Guthrie Stanley, Fogarty, Constable, Ratagolea Gregson Murdoch etc

If we had this side today, we would have won by a long way.
Next week if we don't give a tall back a go, we need to be admonished
I'd also give C.Guthrie a drumming over his efforts today. Too many mistakes when it counted

Can't expect kids to get you over the line against experienced teams, yet, they almost did. Brilliant effort in the 2nd half

hawks arent a finals side. we should of won comfortably today.

Aren't they? They're 2-0, and imo we were lucky to get within a point today - we had some good periods of play but their forward line looked dangerous and we could do nothing to stop their rebound from their D50 - they had more scoring shots and more I50s, and they won the game. Hard to argue against that.

I'll concede we were somewhat undermanned (and the selection of Stanley over Smith has me baffled), but by no means do I reckon we should have won 'comfortably' - we were lucky to push them as hard as we did.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Hawthorn make the finals in 2018. I'd also back us in a rematch at full strength. But we were never winning that game comfortably by any stretch of the imagination.

Was Zuthrie actually on Roughead or was it the defensive structure breaking down? Feels like having Taylor and Lonergan for the last decade was taken for granted the last decade and Scott forgot to play a KPD.

This!!! I was down that end and they really worked it well to drag blokes up and out of the forward line. I thought our mids defensively weren’t great. Lots to work on.

Frustrated with the loss, but walked away with a little bit of a smile after that last quarter.

Think we went another level in that last quarter than hawthorn couldn’t go with.

Our side lifted a gear their team couldn’t go with. Had no right to come back from that far back, and there was no way it would happen against a side we evenly matched with.

Only point of difference in the end that cost us the match was having no key defenders.

We are a better side and I will back us against them if we play again this season with a fit side.
Hawks were a key player down since q1. We did exactly what melbourne did to us last week in the same position.

Without Stanley, we are 12 points further behind.
McEvoy is no ordinary player.
Stanley was nowhere near our worst.
Smith was close to that last week- and I am a big Zac fan.

I agree about Stanley. He did well in some aspects of the game. He was just beaten by a very good ruckman. Definitely not our worst player.

Not sure I've seen us butcher the ball, especially by hands, that badly for a while.

Also cannot fathom why a bigger bodied backman was not included... thats just... stupid. Zac got out marked/bustled by Roughhead at least three times at crucial moments in the match... Gardener or House should have gotten a gig, just to be able to bring the ball to ground... until Taylor and Hendo are back the MC has to give some game time to those guys.

Outs: Gregson, Parsons, Henry, O'Connor
Ins: Gardener, Duncan, Smith, S Selwood

Blicavs down back with those changes.

The difference between the two is that Smith contests the behind kick outs whereas Stanley doesn't go near them, which lead to the repeated entries we saw in the 2nd quarter. McEvoy would time and again spoil or tap down to his smalls and the ball would be pumped back into an out of position defence.

Was going to go over to the Hawthorn board to congratulate them on a great contest and win, especially after Good Friday's trash-fest. But its just page after page of profanity and whinging about the umpiring. Now I'm so looking forward to beating them in 'a game that matters!'.

Hawthorn - I respect the team*, but I wouldn't piss on their supporters if they were on fire.

*except Sicily.

True.
And we were as well with Henry? To a much lesser extent.
Burgoyne is close to their best after Mitchell though.

The prelim was far far worse in terms of butchering the ball. It was only a minor issue today.

I didn’t expect us to win so I’m proud of the lads to pull themselves to an unlikely but epic win.
That second quarter and how our midfield just stopped was what lost us the game, fantastic second half for the most part.
Parsons and Guthrie are worried for mine, the former just seemed unwilling to body the ball all game (although kicked a cracker of a goal) and Guthrie... well he’s at the cross roads I reckon.
The Roughead match up late hurt for sure but atleast 1 and perhaps the second of those last quarter goals Stewart was matched to him and got lost in the structure, thats gunna happen when A, we have no senior backmen and B, when the MC don’t select any tall backs...
Still plenty of positives and plenty of negatives and move on to next week.
Oh, and I’m in love with Tim Kelly.

True. I think they’ll make the 8 for sure. We’ll struggle to make the 8 with today’s team but plenty of players to come back, so

Only downside of the Danger/Selwood/Ablett combo is that it's going to exponentially increase the volume of obnoxiously dumb comments from opposition supporters any time we lose. Any opposition midfielder who plays well against Geelong is going to get written up as if they "took on and bested all three of Dangerwoodlett combined".

Imagine if we lose to Richmond and Dusty plays well. God help us. The media will anoint him the greatest player in the history of sport.

Maybe a sneaky knee to the head like Sicily did to Selwood?
If SJ got 2 weeks for a knee to the ribs V Demons a few years ago.. then a full kneed drop to the head must be 3 weeks.
High contact, intentional, forceful.

Gone you ****er.

GO Catters

That and smith wins knockouts and tends to murder the smaller rucks like mcevoy.

Gardiner? Talk about gifting games- what will he have done to get a game next week? Has he played a decent VFL game yet?

Dangerwoodlett were the main reason we got close today.
