Parfitt zero tackles, unusual for him. Symbolic of our mids' attitude today.

The strapping on Parfitt's shoulders

Parfitt took a big hit right in front of me very early in the game. He went in for retribution moments later and conceded the 50 when he was late to the marking contest.

It's not how often he gets the ball, or what he does with it (although sometimes his disposal is questionable). It's that he runs with a lot less effort when the opposition have the ball. There was an extended stretch of play today just inside our F50 near the boundary line where it was very obvious that one of our players was phoning in their pressure.
Varcoe he is not.

Krueger didn't look out of place which was good. He does need a bit more size for AFL IMO, looks a good size in the VFL but a bit skinny for an AFL key back.

I've described Krueger's VFL efforts previously as recklessly courageous when he has been knocked out jumping into contests that he really shouldn't. At the game today that is something that stood out to me again. He was launching at spoils from too far back for contests he couldn't realistically get to so ended up not impacting the initial contest and being on the deck and out of the follow up play. Learning when to go and when to sit off to impact the next contest is going to be a big thing for him. I did find it interesting that he was doing a fair bit of conducting in the backline and pointing out where the ball carrier should be kicking to. I guess in the VFL set up he would be seen as a leader out there and that transitioned across to his debut. At one stage he went to ground and clutched at his leg as if he had been shot and I thought he had broken it. Must have just twinged a calf or something as came back on later.

Overall we just played in third gear and ground out the 4 points.

We seemed hell bent on playing the ball down the hill side of the ground and once North figured that out, combined with both teams playing numbers behind the ball, it wasn't pretty viewing.

Zuthrie was good with the intercept marks. Surprised he had as many touches as he did but all the defenders waxed hard core with the switches in play.

Our accuracy overall was poor but Blitz, Guthrie & Hawk kicked some low percentage goals from the boundary. That was the difference in the end.

Did Krueger pull up ok? Saw him limp around in the last and then didn’t see him again. Thought he played well mostly played very well in the 1st quarter. Looks like he can play at the level and hope he gets some more games soon.

well it was an unusual moment.
I think the senior players, which includes Guthrie, try to bring Rohan into the game. He's a genuine game changer, so better for the team when he's engaged. Maybe there's a sense that Rohan is feeling a bit left out with the Triple Tower talk.
Anyway Rohan can be a barometer for the team, so good attitudes all around.

I love the passion in the Red Rohan, the enjoyment he gets from team mates goals is well expressed, never fails to get around them.
He laughs his head off when things are going well, and celebrates his own goals red faced and on frantic Scott levels.
He works wonders at ground level with his speed and knows it.
Stick it up 'em Red.

Zac Guthrie’s performances have steadily improved and he is dominant at VFL level. 18 months ago I thought he had no chance, but while this performance was one out of the box he has improved dramatically and this did not come from nowhere.

Definitely worth giving him a contract, I am not going much further than that.

Great to get the win. Important and most did their job professionally. We have a very high success rate against teams that park the bus or just play on blindly.

Couple of points
1. When we play poor sides who refuse to attack we naturally slow down and deny them the footy (more than usual) and chip it around and you can bank some horrific foot errors resulting in scores. This seems a lot more evident prevalent against the poorer teams

2. We miss Miers who is an attacking small. We didn’t look like being dangerous on the deck up forward. He’s needed in big games

3. We are playing with fire matching JH on deep talls. He’s been special this year but I thought Larkey off very limited opps looked very dangerous.

Allegedly 5 teams are into him.

And therein lies the rub.
It may explain his selection inconsistencies, but still getting the occasional chance to show his wares.
Very capable on his day, despite the tendency to play bruise free, but he'll move on. Maybe the West.
At the end of the day he's been around for a VFL while, been a good servant, deserves opportunity.

I saw that and my first thought was a knee knowing he has a history of knee issues - I was very happy when he finally got up and could see that he wasn't seriously hurt

You should see their board. No mention of the fact that they flooded our 50 - whilst criticizing our gamestyle -, and only mentioning their outs but not ours. Yes they were missing 3 very good players, but we were missing 6 - Atkins, O'Connor, Henderson, J. Cameron, Miers and Duncan. Fair bunch of decent players there

media and clubs are nortorious for never mentioning geelong outs, also commentators.. it’s like injuries don’t affect us but effect all others.

the worst I can recall was the Brisbane game were we won by less than a kick with about 5 of our best 10 players missing against a full strength lions and hardly a peep mentioned.

I dunno about anyone else but ill be ****ed if Danger was on his 2 year average today

Let him go, just a good ordinary footballer.. 24 end of this season, so is into his prime well and truly, not a young developing mid like people keep saying.. bartel had a brownlow by his age.

doubt Richmond are keen based of how soft defensively he is.

Yeah look, the Cats were too good today but some of you blaming North for the defensive game are off the mark. Both teams played an extra man either around the contest or defence but one team attacked through the corridor and one chipped the ball around looking for openings.

The fact is Geelong clogged up the corridor as that's where North attack so in effect Geelong set up defensively to stifle North and cause turnovers.

To say North was flooding and play a dour game style is incorrect, it was your mob that had to smother us which they did in their true professional way.

Kudos to the Cats, they can adapt to quell the opposition's attacks. Oh and to those who have dismissed this game as ugly or shit, are underselling both teams as it was a good game played in trying conditions. There is no shame only beating us by 20 points, we're going alright at the moment.

I have posted before about Zuthrie's foot skills and they were on show again today. Really safe by foot...very Stewart-like....tremendous game today.

Hard to drop on that performance, but Atkins will come back in I think...as will Hendo...

Expect a few "managed" players to appear over the next few weeks.

GWS next...will ba very different game to the one we saw today.

Very accurate post. All of it.

You look at Geelong.. when we play the better sides we play good attacking football. But when we play the poorer sides we are more defensive game...
Take the 4 points and move on
Better sides don't play 10 players in the backline during general play. There's a reason we just smashed ineffective entry after ineffective entry. 60 inside 50s for 8 goals. Just first order bus parking.

North showed a lot of good signs for them too. Surprised at their midfield clearance work especially

With Danger, he received a cork, late in the second quarter, hence the heavy bandage on his thigh after HT. Was never picked up by the commentary team or Ben Dixon on the boundary. He spent all of the third quarter up forward as a result before testing it in the last, where he was excellent.

I think the Haw eyes were focused elsewhere

Fox Very true..but a lot is about taking what they give and beating. The best sids do not park the bus...so why would anyone just long bomb it to an out number.

Having said that..wer werr far from crisp and could have made more from our chances..
