On one hand, **** gambling and **** Collingwood.

On the other, Stephenson is 20 years old. Name the 20 year old who hasn't done something really, really dumb at some point, and I'll show you someone who is lying.

Ban is appropriate, but he is lucky to be playing again this year. Funny that it's Collingwood under Bucks that this sort of thing keeps happening; didn't he have 2 suspensions for recreational drugs under his watch early, and a few other playing group indiscretions over his tenure there as well?

That's true of course, but if you're being told; don't do it....don't do it.....just don't do it......and you do it?.

You can't simply side to being young although there are factors involved. Apply this to any other 'crime' and the rules are the same.

No choice for the AFL than to do what was done and in saying that....He was still lucky.

It's Australia. People boo like it's their natural inclination the very instant they're told not to. No-one is as susceptible to reverse psychology than an Australian is. You tell an Aussie not to do something - don't run that light, don't speed, don't be racist, don't be stupid - and lo and behold, there's a subset of this country that not only will go right ahead and do it but will be loud and proud about having done it.

I'm not saying it isn't dumb, more than the subset of people in this thread who are all 'Manipulated outcome', 'Soft penalty' probably need to consider how willing they are to potentially ruin someone else's life for very little tangible gain. Not, that neither of the criticisms are untrue, but it's a pretty long time away from the game for someone whose entire life has been focused on nothing else for a long time. He's still a human, and it's relatively clear to me that he did not expect the can of shit he opened wide up.

I can think of others who could do with an example being made of them over a 20 year old. How long's the average AFL career again? Long enough - if you're a moron - to financially sustain you for the rest of your life? What if - in his time away - he falls in a pit, never comes out? Wouldn't be the first, or the last.

If i was Stephensons Manager I’d be particularly worried about his “Almost” want to give up gambling.

I’d be putting him on an allowance pronto and putting everything else he earns into an estate that needs a signatory such as a parent to be able to access

He clearly has an issue that now has a very clear warning sign

Really? Let's not tell anyone not to kill then. :)

You enter a system that has the rules being drummed into you day and night.
You're told what to say and what not to say. Told what to think and what not to think. Told what you can do and told what you can't do....See this point.

You can do whatever you want to do, but pretending you didn't understand in this situation doesn't count and it has nothing to do with age as it has for the respect of those advising you of the repercussions for bucking the trend.

Stephenson 'chose' to ignore his teachings. At the ned of the day, this is what we have. He made a considered choice and it was a poor one. Game over.

Lol i knew it. He didn't suddenly become overcome with guilt or feeling of doing the right thing.

He basically was dumb enough to mention his bet to Howe, who told him to tell Walsh...since Howe knew of the bet, there was no other choice for Stephenson but to comply, he wasn't going to get away with it.

You either missed the part of my post in which I stated that it was still dumb or outright ignored it. That he is young and stupid should not mitigate the seriousness of what he did. What I am objecting to is the notion that a 12 week ban is an inadequate suspension length somehow, or that he deserved the book thrown at him, or other such nonsense.

Who was the last player that got done for 12 weeks? Hell, who's been suspended for longer than 12 weeks, and what precisely did they do to warrant that suspension?

they're so ****ing insistent on maintaining the integrity of the game - and rightly so - why can't they find some integrity in their sentencing? useless jerks

It's just one step away from full-on match fixing, that's what needs to highlighted.
As soon as you're placing bets on yourself and your own team - on games you are actually playing in - the next step is when it occurs to you "Hmmm, I can actually influence the outcome here..."

As with PEDs, part of being a professional athlete is a full understanding of the seriousness of it.

Stephenson literally made a comment to Howe about a teammate 'costing him his multi'...so he's actively thinking about his bets during the game and could very possibly take actions on the field to help him win.

That is right, he is Very young (2nd yr in workforce) and does break an out of hours workplace rule to a very small degree and if he does not admit to it nobody would know. He cops a $20k pay cut and is put on severe probation which excludes him from contributing at work for 10 weeks. Severe in my book
Pensioners put more money than that on tattslotto
Next: Watch out you footballers that use your teammates numbers on your powerball entry

How many times are people told not to speed - an offence which can kill someone
Most of the time the penalty is a couple of demerit points and a fine of $200-$300

I'm pretty sure he also loses 5k per game match payment.

it's not about him - it's the game

People are told not to speed for valid reasons. Fines are apportioned.
Should speeding end up in manslaughter, the penalty will also be apportioned. The two situations are not mutually bound though.

So what was your point? :)

That doesn't necessarily prove he was 'actively' thinking about it - simply proves he has a brain (despite making a stupid bet) Eg You have driven to Princes Park and you are running laps when you see your car go past - You exclaim "some ****** has stolen my car". You weren't thinking about your car but your brain is always working. Same difference I say

Judges can and have taken into account other factors which influenced an accused behaviour, and they have taken youth into consideration before ruining a young person's life via time in prison.

It's actually this kind of thing I'm objecting to here; the general 'throw the book at him!' of it all. Too many people in general looking to punish instead of how to stop or discourage poor behaviour, and in so doing seek the ruination of so many without considering what they're doing. You see it all the time when the MSM reports on crime; 'judges too soft', 'minimum sentences for minor offenses would sort out the riff-raff', etc.

Probably not the thread for this discussion, though.

A 19yro recently employed person in Aged Care whose Police Check shows they have a pending case for drug use while driving is immediately sacked.

Do we say, penalty too harsh, only a kid making a mistake?

Or do we say fair enough, they are working with vulnerable people and will have access to their medication and valuables and the temptation may be too great?
