Good and commentators shouldn't go in the same sentence.
Only one I really rated was Dennis Cometti and I'm pretty sure he only played at lower levels, maybe WAFL.

Why don't they just have a sound channel that's just crowd sound?

I suggested this years ago on Bigfooty and it wouldn't be that hard to do. Eg, crowd mics on left channel and commentary on right channel. Viewers could mix as desired.

Foxtel used to have a function on the remote where you could silence the commentary but still hear the sounds of the game and the crowd atmosphere.
It was awesome. Loved it and wish every year that they'd bring it back.
I hate commentators with a passion. Loathe all of them.
Hasn't been a decent one since Dennis.
