Looking at the ladder currently - we've beaten 9th (who should be 13th lbh), 12th and Brisbane's VFL side. Sydney should have buried us but wasted their chances.

All of which were dead rubber games after we botched our season and started 2-10. Second half of the season, pressure is off and no expectations, team reverts to their capable mean.

2022 was for the most part a copy of 2021. What is the bet 2023 is more of the same?
Far from dead rubbers for those teams. If Saintd had won they’d be eighth now. If Pies hadn’t pulled a win out of their arse ..that’s four top eight teams with Suns not far off. That’s some form

No point defending Charlie Cameron then. You defend to your strengths, if they are quicker don't let them get out the back. If we are that slow we can't overcome a lack of pace get rid of dodo.
The whole forward group is slow and that is why we struggled to hold the Pies half backs.
Nothing to do with our back 6.

Imagine Clarko B appointed coach of Hawthorn from 2016-2021. What did he achieve in those six years without those stars not at their peak or missing altogether? To the point the Hawks replaced him with a rookie coach

Let's just get Malcolm Blight. He'll cull many of the old guys, play the kids and we'll win back to back flags in his first 2 years.

Or it could turn out like his failed coaching comeback at St Kilda.

Careful what you wish for as there's no guarantee Clarkson could've (or will) do anything different to Rutten with the list at his disposal and the injuries we've had across the season.

Clarko will be at Essendon next season, done deal. My close mate is close to one of the members of the Essendon board. 5 years to be announced end of the year. Same mate that told me shiel will be at Essendon and saad to carlton prior to happening. Take it how you like.
You said you knew about Saad coz you had a mate who was friends with the Carlton recruiter. And you knew about Caldwell coz you had a mate who was close to him. 🤔

Who do we think is a better coach Clarkson or Rutten?

Who gives ess a better chance of success?

Rutten ain't bad there is worse but there is also better available. We need to be ruthless to win a final again sometime soon.

Its like saying would you rather Bont/petracca or parish?

We also keep a lot of players on the list/nice contracts because of loyalty, cultural reasons.

But No final for twenty years, what is the culture missing to be a successful one.

I'm glad we seem to have a nice good culture but unfortunately it's just not a successful one and I don't have any confidence until I see some ruthless hard decisions.

Does it matter, maybe not as I'll support either way and be proud but until I see it I just have no expectation of success. Like a saints or suns fan.

Clarkson was a great coach.

What has he done since 2016 to suggest he's still a great coach?

Sheedy was a great coach, until he wasn't. Malthouse was a great coach, until he wasn't.

Maybe Clarkson still has time left as a great coach, but nothing he's produced over the last ~ 5 seasons of coaching says that he's still a great coach.

You think he's still a great coach, but you don't really know. He could be Malthouse at Carlton for all anyone knows. Hawthorn replaced him with a first-time coach after all.

Only 2020 and 2021 (likely end up with as many wins as Essendon this year) were disasters. 2 top 4 finishes in those 6 years. Essendon haven’t finished top 4 since 2001.

Rutten is a second year coach that has shown plenty with the second youngest team in the comp, by all accounts has the players respect and admiration and is clearly building a strong culture that the players are buying into. Sacking him to bring in Clarkson is akin to delisting Draper and signing Ben McEvoy. Coz, you know, he's achieved more. The club has made a lot of mistakes over the past 15-20 years but sacking Rutten at this point would be up there with the dumbest moves imaginable.

Top 4 in 2018 with a ordinary list was a good achievement.

I don't rate Clarko as highly as most, I think he relied heavily on Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis and Burgoyne into the middle when things got tough but he's not quite Sheedy 2007 or Malthouse coaching for the record levels.

The first time coach comment also needs context. Hawthorne did that because they were terrified Mitchell would walk.

We’re they both not correct? This mate is involved in the afl

Rutten is a terrible coach. His presser after the Collingwood game is all you need to see. Look at what clarko would do in the situation and what rutten did, massive difference.

How anyone judges coaching ability from a presser, while also claiming to be one of the most connected people in footy.....

He’s sitting there smiling, talking about positives. Doesn’t look like he gives 2 ****s, players might like him but that doesn’t mean he’ll get the most out of the team. Clarko will make us a top 4 team in the next 1-2 years. Plus he’ll attract good players.

If Hawthorn still thought Clarkson was a great coach with 5ish years in the tank as a great - not simply good - coach, would they have let Mitchell walk? Because if we appointed him that's what we'd need to believe.

I don't think Clarkson has fallen off the cliff - yet - but I'm not convinced he's still the great coach he once was.

And yes, having the list he had at his disposal undoubtedly helped his career coaching record, pretty sure having Hodge on the list - who turned out to be one of the best on-field coach / leaders the game has seen - definitely helps, as does having a generational FF talent out of your first draft.

You only have to look at how confused our team can look at times without strong on-field leaders to see how much a Hodge type presence would help.

So it's one mate who's best mates with the Carlton recruiter, close to Caldwell and close to an Essendon board member? Or is it a relative?

Close mate who works at afl level, very close to Essendon people.

I personally think Clarko may be able to fast track things a bit but the fact is he has no where near the leadership in the playing group that he had to build with at Hawthorn and he will not have the star players to work with either.
It will still be a slowish build as he will have to turn over the list to get what he needs to drive it.

By that logic no coach who has ever coached before should ever coach again. Which is nothing but a shit take.

owen87: clarko won 4 flags in two different decades but he wouldn't know how to help us become consistent/successful! All of that experience accounts for nothing, unproven

Also owen87: if we get like, some old guy in the backline, that would help us immediately

Hurrdurr.

Right.

Coz he was a relative when he told you the Saad news.

Which incidentally you only posted you knew about it a month ago after it became public knowledge.
