I thought we drafted alright.

Got some good tough guys around the footy.
With Stephens I hope we see a few play soon enough.

Even Conways follow up work looks good.
Conway will take years, but will probably turn into No1 ruck. Agree, we brought in some hard nuts with some pace with the last three picks. I think Knevitt will go alright, as a Third Tall Forward.

Can someone lay out all the picks we have next year?
Picks tied to Geelong 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Then is it 3 more 3rd rounders?

Our 1st and 2nd, our 3rd, carlton and brisbanes 3rds and hawthorns 4th.

Generally happy with the recruiting strategy -
- all the ND picks are solid bodies - no skinnies needing years to develop.
- all have some contested ball attributes and ability to break out of congestion.
- except Conway all the NDs and the new rookies have pace
- Conway is a genuine ruck (not a hybrid or a project like Tsap).
- three NDs are locals, so less ‘go home’ risk.
Only concern would be some comments /concerns of others about kicking - we desperately need elite kickers.

It would be interesting to see how different our draft would have been if ...we had Brown as a Father Son...

Rich bid Brown I doubt we trade up to get 23... Our 22 pick goes on Brown, and our pick 30 slides a bit. We probably miss on Conway and Knevitt.. but as we keep our picks in the 30's maybe we look at different players in the 30's... perhaps we draft Howes as we were linked in trading up for him.

I have no issue with who we picked because I mean in reality we have no idea and Wells knows a good player when he see one.

I do think we are lightweights in the strategy of the draft. I mean if we rated Willis (who the SA talent manager didn't have is his top 10) ahead of Sosie or MacDonald or Butler then we should have leveraged that. Same with Conway. The idea that Haw or Carl were picking him defied any logic at all and was poker 101. I would have loved to know if we had Willis ahead of those three on our draft board.

I liked the deal we did when we skipped over Draper and scoped up an extra pick. More of this please if we are going to pick up smokeys like Kroeger with decent picks. If we were set on our players, like we seem to be as club every single year, then get creative. As we slip down the ladder we need every free kick we can. Something similar could have happened with Willis even though I think had we taken MacDonald & Knevitt then Conway would have been there at #32 and most likely Willis at #44.

I really think he could have got a better net result with those 3 early picks we had and ended up with exactly the same players.

We passed over Howes three times. Riley B talked that up on the coverage and every time we had our pick said "this would be the pick" but in reality we didn't want him when you pass over him that many times.

We passed over him but my point is simply that we would have had extra picks. Who do we fill those picks with. I doubt we have Conway and Knevitt but we have three kids in the 30's and Brown... alt could we have traded to get ahead of the bid?

Willis wouldn’t have been there at 44. The day before the draft Port, Roos and Swans were linked to him in the 30s.

We didn't pick the players I liked but overall I'm happy with the haul, and happy to back the club in. The one concern I have is every player we drafted except maybe Whyte has a history of injuries: Conway knee, Knevitt ACL, Willis back and ankle, Kroeger unsure but only 7 games in two years.

We don't have a good track record of rehabilitating players with injury histories. I thought we may have gone away from our strategy of getting the bargain injured draftee.

Was not just our pics they said last night a lot of these kids have been injured

Who is the best kick of the lot? Certainly following the Melb model of contested beasts only (Oliver, Viney, Swallow, Petracca, Harmes etc) . Trick is they have a unicorn in Petracca who is such a beautiful kick.

I would have taken Arlo Draper rather than trade with Collingwood. Thought that was a poor move based on his level of talent. I did enjoy the mini melt by Essendon when he was selected by Collingwood so that was good in a way

You can understand the strategy but it’s fraught if the player is spending more time with the dr’s and physio’s than on the park.

I like the style of player we’ve gone for albeit I reckon we could have mixed it up with a couple with more damaging foot skills. We’ve effectively gone for 3 hard nuts.

I dont disagree with that and i made a similar comment last night so in terms of maximising value we could have done better i think (eg conway at 33) albeit that the crows may well have taken willis at 36 had we done that. I think the actual players we picked are a great fit for our needs though.
