The big picture is that Wells has done very well indeed over the years, particularly early on. Think of Josh Hunt, pick 48 was it?

However I do think he has fluffed several of his first picks in recent years. The Menzel story is tragic of course; and let us not forget Vardy who Scarlett rated our best pick in that year, but he too was felled by injury.

In any event, his decisions over the next month will profoundly shape our destiny; let us hope that he repeats earlier glory and picks 4 A-graders through the 20s and 30s.
That 2009 draft could have really set us up were it not for injuries. Christensen, Menzel, Vardy, Cowan all were unlucky not to have had stronger careers. Imagine if they had all stayed fit and had joined Duncan as a group that developed together.

What's peoples thoughts on these swaps? () is pick after the 2 father-sons.

1. WB 23(25) for Gee 30(32)*+Future 2nd

2. Ess Future 2nd for Gee 32(34)

3. Carl 25(27) for 34(36)+50(44)

*Essendon can't receive pick 30 as it was their 2nd rounder originally.

Geelong Out: 30(32),32(34),34(36), 50(44), Future 2nd
Geelong In: 23(25), 25(27), Ess Future 2nd

Go to the draft and take best available with 22(24), 23(25), 25(27) and 91 which will come in given they expect min. 56 to max 67 picks taken.

If Conway is still available in the third round potentially live trade a future 3rd.

Don't see any of these trades happening, for the following reasons:

Dogs trade - they need points this year to match the Darcy bid, your proposed trade has them losing 186 points so there's no way they'd do that.

Dons trade - why would either team do this? We trade out pick 32 this year for probably pick 30 next year?

Blues trade - I don't think we'd trade a 2nd and 3rd round pick just to move up nine spots, especially given the evenness of this draft around those spots.

My rationale was:

Dogs trade - With swapping 23 out and 30 in they are only 51 points short of matching a bid at pick 2 and they net a future pick.

Dons - Dons have already expressed that they want to trade a future 2nd to get back in this years draft at round 2. We get a future 2nd to replace ours which we just gave to the dogs above in a draft which is expected to be full of good tall prospects.

Blues - Depends if we are looking to take Schlensog with a late pick in the draft then we are better off getting rid of 50 with the blues looking to split 25. We can then use 91 which will come in between 55-60 for our former rook.

Essentially, we do the 3 trades resulting in losing 34 and 50 to upgrade 30 and 32 to 23 and 25 with a swap of future 2nds.

Paywalled, but the West Australian saying Schlensog likely to land here. Have been pretty confident of this one all along, so not surprised in the least if it does happen. If we somehow managed to get a commitment from him pre-draft without DFA (to ward other clubs off), then we could conceivably get him as a rookie - which would be incredible - and give us 5 live picks.

Probably won't happen, but damn would that be a good outcome

Brendon Gale in the Herald on the lack of games for kids in the draft due to Covid, saying "We traded our first-rounder to Geelong thinking we will know more about the kids in 2021 and it didn't work out the way we expected."

Not sure which club will know more in 2021. But it certainly appears that we knew more than Richmond did when it came to them giving up their pick to us last year...

Yes, yes and yes from me

Carlton i think are only using one pick so they would want 34 and their future 3rd (which we hold) not 34 and 50.

I like the general idea. Id try and do a 2 leg trade with the dogs if we can get it past the rules as i think the dogs plan is to trade 23 out just before they match darcy then i think they want to live trade back in the top 40 and we could help with both parts of that.

On the essendon bit they have the davey twins as FS next year so they are expecting their F2 to ger swallowed by a bid so they are probably happy to trade it for a 2nd this year.

Great news for mine. I know some people may be keener on getting a kid in the draft, but I think we could do with both if possible. Plus, we have no idea where kids in the draft will land and the KPDs we rate may be gone by the pick we intend to use on one.

Do we know if he's already nominated for the draft? My only worry is someone else picks him up that way. I'd be fine picking him up as a DFA and trying to either package two picks to move up or shift one into next year with someone keen on a late second knowing we'll have to hit the draft hard again then too.

You would get 34 and a future 2nd for pick 23
I honestly believe these picks are being overvalued. I don’t know if this is due to media or BF or is actually what clubs internally believe them to be worth. If WB essentially want 34 + F2 (likely to be around 30) for 23, good luck to whoever does that deal. Remember that WB are trying to offload this pick to avoid it being swallowed up in the Darcy bid. Whilst they want the best possible deal, I don’t think any right minded club would give up such a premium. I honestly believe a future R2 on its own should be enough and they should take it, or risk being too greedy and getting nothing for it (ie. swallowed up in Darcy bid).

The proposed trade was the other way though, we get their future 2022 pick and trade out our 2021 pick 32.
