I'm certainly not going to come at you as I 100% agree agree. His VFL form was simply just above the level.

I think a lot of people would be surprised to hear he had a 47% contested possession rate. That is a lot higher than a lot of full time inside mids. What does this mean? He is an absolute gun at getting the lose ground balls which highlights his intelligence and work rate. And he is so clean at ground level you barely even notice him. I think I only saw him fumble at ground level once this year. A real 1 touch player.

It also highlights his rate of improvement. 12 months ago he had zero inside game. So to be able to find his own ball like he did this year is significant improvement in such a short time period. Like the coaches felt comfortable enough to let him stand next to Petracca at stopages in a prelim final.

Another thing I'd like to add is that I haven't seen many first year players who understand space as well as he does. When going for the ground balls he really tries to protect the space and really makes good handball decisions to the man where the space is.

This is where I see tremendous upside with his pace and foot skills. Once he gains a bit of confidence and puts on some muscle he is just going to burst through these small pockets of space into the wide open space where he can use his foot skills and gain a lot of meterage.

Not to mention he was playing on about 60% game time this year which will means all his stats will naturally go up 20-30% over the coming years.

Combining Walsh, Duncan and Danger is a bit extreme but my best attempt at comparing him to one player would be Josh Kelly. Obviously isn't a Josh Kelly clone but like him Holmes can do some really clever things at the stoppage but really excels at spreading from that first initial contest. This means he can also start on the wing or at half forward and still be able to find his 25 impactful touches in a game game.

I was really disappointed hearing so many fans give him flack when he won the best young player. People saying stuff like "if he is our best young player our future is doomed." I understand why though. It's because your average joe just notices him stuffing up in front of goal so that is all they can base their opinion on.

Really excited to follow his development.
Kelly without his composure or kicking ability. Clark's 1st year was much better. The push back comes from when people say he is like dangerfield. I think he is a comparable talent to Guthrie if he develops

Reading Knightmares review..says we traded up for Sheldrick, and that we got messed up a bit by him being taken by Syd at 18. I wonder what we do if we do take Sheldrick, would still take the other 3 or 4 and have 5 little grunt machines?

I’m not sure that’s correct. I’d say Sheldrick was in our mix of players we’d have wanted but Wells seemed very intent on getting both Conway and Knevitt. I took it that we traded up to secure both as we knew that they’d be gone by the 30’s.

I thought Holmes was very composed with his ball use considering he is still within his first 10 games. Yes he particularly had his mishaps infront of goal but that isn't going to continue. But his vision and decision making in contested situations was clearly far beyond his age.

At afl level we haven't seen his kicking but trust me in the vfl he was running full tilt out of stoppages and still serving it on a platter to the key forwards.

I would have to disagree with Clark having the better first year. Clark did definitely use his run and dash more however he was getting the ball in much more space in the first place as he was receiving the ball from outside the contest. I think the fact we saw this contested ability from Holmes means he has a whole lot more upside and natural progression.

The other thing is we never saw Clark improve in his first season in fact he probably tapered off. Whereas it felt that Holmes was getting better and better and better with each game. I think this is also a clear indication of Holmes's upside.

I think the big differnce between Holmes and Guthrie is that Guthrie is extremely uncontested outside of the stoppage. Whereas Holmes this year has shown a greater contested ability outside of the stoppage.

Reservations. I think we tilted and windmills a little too long, and we lost peripheral vision a bit. Perhaps not getting a deal done at times might have been better but most in the industry think different to supporters.. although thinks its irronic that now Cook has gone to Carlton , he say in an interview its time for us to go with kids., and we are basically pot committed for 2022.

Darcy played games quickly , so dis SKing back in the day. id not rule it out totally but logically id say we do not see Conway till late 2023 probably 2024. .. and thats OK. Be nice if he surprises us but its not essential, it more important that he is ready to go when he is really needed. I hope Neale presses for a game at some stage in 22, no games after two years for him might not be as clever. Tsap is the mystery bag.

With respect to Knightmare, he is excellent in terms of his analysis of draft talent but I don’t think he has any inside info on which clubs want which players. I think that’s where Cal is much more informed. In hindsight, I think we targeted 23 to ensure we grabbed both local kids (Conway + Knevitt) at 22&23. If Sheldrick was still there, it would’ve been interesting but I think reckon we would’ve gone local - always remember Wells saying that if there’s not much difference between 2 players, he’d always pick the local. Who knows how our midfield draftees will go, but barring injury, Geelong would view Conway as our number 1 ruck for the next 10-12 years no doubt (once he’s ready of course after a few years of development). I have a feeling Neale will eventually go back to WA, possibly as soon as end of the year, and like ppl have said here, is more of a ruck/forward anyway.

il love the analysis on our change of strategy at this years draft. It’s clear we can’t win next year without at least 4 or more new players in that slow team with a tired midfield that go whipped by Melb. So, we hopefully have Holmes improving, one of Narkle, Simpson actually stepping up, Cooper Stephen’s delivering on his promise, SDK delivering, maybe Neale, and maybe one of Willis or Kroeger. Overall, can see a fully changed midfield in 3 years time with more drafting like this next year. Understand the Conway pick now so we get him up and running by 2024, but who knows, if we get injuries next year he may surprise. Love this draft too for putting pressure on our “middling” players to improve or get out of the way.

Willis looks the most likely of the recent draftees to debut. Looks physically ready. If he shows good VFL form early would like see him preferenced in front of Higgins, Zuthrie etc. Perhaps even allowing Joel and Paddy to have more regular breaks throughout the season.

Interesting article in the Age comparing Richmond and Geelong's relative approaches to list regeneration.

Article fails to factor in the potential of Max Holmes, apart from that it is pretty depressingly accurate as far as I'm concerned.

I’m surprised that wasn’t written by Ralph it was that one eyed.

Tiges will continue to prioritise youth, even though two young falls just left for more opportunity.
Max Holmes not mentioned is cherry picking stats at it finest.
Cats best mature agers aprt from Danger have been recruited. Jeremy Cameron anyone??
I’m sure a cats supporting journo could paint a different picture if they wanted to.

Possibly could have mentioned more about how their list is built off the back of mediocrity too, including Tom Brown the bastards!

I too read the Age article today and largely agree with it, though i wouldn't have rated Hendo a cross and I have high hopes for Holmes - a bit of alliteration for those among you who are literary.

At this stage too i feel that the Tigers have done better than us at the draft, albeit they had a very strong hand. Time will tell.

I would hope to see some of the draftees in the team from very early on, together with Sam DeK, Cooper and Stevens - even if it means losing games. Certainly Willis looks strong enough. I'm not enthused by the thought of watching Dal, Higgins, Kolo, Atkins, Menegola and others all season. And I'd be amazed if the likes of See, Danger and Duncan can get through the season without mishap.

Further, I was hoping we'd get Dean and/or Lewis or Blayne OLoughlin - the latter 2 are skilful left-footers who would fit nicely in to our backline.

Not sure how closely you read the article, but it was written by Jake Niall, a Collingwood supporter. Anyway, he was quoting from recruiters such as Matt Rendell who aren't tied to either club. Can't see how they would be 'one eyed'.

Jeremy Cameron is mentioned. You seem to have missed that.

He did mention that they picked up players due to finishing lower on the ladder (e.g. Martin). As Niall said, they picked up Brown as a result of us swapping first round picks.

The only element he didn't mention was that we got Holmes, which may turn out to be very astute.

The article did mention Cameron didn't it? - I did acknowledge Max Holmes was overlooked here and agree with most on our board that he looks an excellent prospect.

But I think the general thrust of it was accurate - moving forward the Tigers have opted to hit the draft hard; no their flags were not built upon this approach (ours were though) but their 5 picks inside the top 30 (including one in the top 10) is exactly how I'd like to have seen Geelong freshen up the list.

Fair enough - Jake Niall is a Pies supporter though. I was obviously his pitch from the start that Tigers are rich on youth and is not so much. I think this year is a clear change in direction, and next year is the real test given we have a standard hand plus extra 3rd rounders. Will be interesting but maybe they plan to tip in to get into top 10 for a more elite talent in the midfield where quite a few of the top 10 will be talls.

Quote “The cats’ most successful recruits, Dangerfield aside, were actually draft picks”.

Just saw Geelong website posted highlights of Dempsey - obviously raw but the kid has a great pair of hands! hopefully develops as we hope cause have a dominant aerial medium forward could be very useful

Im not sure its correct either... but it would not be the first time the Swans have done that to us. I think Beatson of looks along similar lines as Wells.

One can never be certain that a particular players would be there, especially having to trade it so early... just another story that may or may not come out eventually.

Yes to all that. I was more wondering about what it would have done to our other picks. We were linked to Sheldrick strongly , and he seems to match Willis, Kroeger etc... Swings and roundabouts of the draft, and one can only pick who is available at your pick. Once Sheldrick had gone then we really have no idea if we would have taken him before Knevitt. Im happy with the way it turned out. I have raised the Neale going back before, and will until he signs an extension

Schlensog in Geelong atm I hear. Is he from here and visiting home or moved back for footy?
He was a Falcon? Not sure where he was living to be honest.

Always did like Blake and was sorry to see him delisted but could have been a victim of the times, on the plus side time in different system may have been beneficial.
