IMO ... the beauty of what we finally found again..was more like our traditional geelong footy. Trust skill. Trust your team mate. Score. etc. and as we saw from Rich and our era of 07-11 that imprefect attacking football is harder to stop. I guess we see. Lets face it .. our age profile is a ticking clock. If we get another 12 months at the 2022 level ... then it will be like Christmas in Heaven

Agreed. The recent integration and development (in some cases) of Cameron, Stengle, Close, Miers, Holmes, Smith, Zuthrie and SDK has been crucial. Runners, all capable of wizardry and high skill in tight or out in space. Completely transformed how we could transition from defence to attack and our entire forward line method. Was beautiful to see evolve.

Our rucks still are worse than average.
Perhaps, but our set up now was very effective and won us a premiership, where as Stephenson/West in 2012, McIntosh/Simpson in 2014 etc were never going to be good enough.

Blicavs this year was an AA 2nd ruck/mid/wing. And Stanley in finals was played to perfection, he was average in the QF but played his role perfectly in the PF and GF.

The issue for us is either a Blicavs injury/retirement as we don't have a good starting ruck.

Although it required 3 players, the Hawkins/Stanley/Blicavs trifecta of rucking was every bit as influential as Ottens in his hey day.

Stanley and Smith got embarrassed in a few finals 5 or 6 years ago, same as Blicavs by himself. But Stanley improved over the years and eventually Blicavs role was perfected. The Hawkins F50 rucks the last few years have been a revelation.

Still, we need Conway to come on in the next couple and even then probably need to look at another option.

Just to confirm my understanding- GC are offering pick 7 and Bowes for a club to take Bowes salary off their books ? Is that right ??

If so - surely a huge list management disaster on GC behalf?!

Correct.

There will be a pick going back in return to make it legal, but it'll be a 2nd rounder (now or future).

I mean, this won't be the first time we absolutely swindle GC on a deal...

Just wanna say that I'm pretty happy that we don't extend players with 6/7-year deals willy nilly like the Dees and the Blues.
With Tassie coming into the comp and a huge salary cap increase in a couple of years, Carlton's deals aren't a stupid as you might think*.

Having star players contracted through the expansion period is clever. And if McKay/Curnow end up being stars for the next half decade, the money that they're on at the end of their contracts will be peanuts in comparison to some of their peers at that time.

Worked so well for the Lions with their 10 year Alistair Lynch deal that they ended up increasing his wage at the end because he was on such massive unders by then.

*Not often I'd stick up for Carlton, but from their perspective it makes sense.

Well Collingwood need to pay him then instead of giving him a lowballing offer. It’s silly saying we want to keep him but fail to play him, recruit another person in a position he plays in, and offer him a bit more than a base contract!
Sounds like classic Pies wanting to eat their cake and have it too, OR, maybe half the players linked to Collingwood won't materialise?

I understand the Pies are probably just wanting to get the best deal they can but I’m a bit surprised by their comments today about Henry.
They haven’t spoke to Geelong but will have a chat to them this week but hope to keep Henry.
They’ve had all year to convince him and he’s declined.

Just bravado. We did the same thing with Clark, so it's just posturing to get the best deal/leaving the door open if a deal can't be done. Remains to be seen just how scorched earth Ollie will go, but it's early days yet

Sorry I must be a bit out of the loop, what happened there?
Just one of their resident insiders/training watchers losing their shit during the Copeland on twitter, abusing Ollie and saying all this mean sh*t. Deleted the tweet, but so many people called her out for it and highlighted double standards with Ginnivan

Bobby Hill confirmed as first trade - to Pies

We did try and make sure that we received a good deal. But opened negotiations with Freo. We accepted he was going when he was out of contract and wanted to leave.

Yeah, once a player says he wants out not sure you want to keep them on the list. I know we did that with Kelly and he played great football but we knew it was just a season and he'd be out. Fr team harmony you want players who are committed

It wasn't that bad, it was lame as hell but that was all... She boasted about giving Ollie a dirty look as she walked past him at the B&F and then gave him a 2nd one just to be sure.. And she was ripped apart by how pathetic it was more than it being ripping a player apart.

Ahhh my bad. I honestly was going off second hand info, as she deleted the tweet, and some people must have been making it worse than it seemed - using the word 'abuse' many times

He was also contracted and had only been at the club 1 season, unlike Ollie who's been there for 2 years and is out of contract. Bit of a difference, IMO

It gets worse. Thorburn is also the chair of City On A Hill - a fundamentalist church which preaches anti homosexuality and abortion doctrines...

I find the AFL allowing someone from that sort of background to be appointed rather concerning. The aflW comp is active in promoting its openness to people of all faiths and sexual preferences... how could he look his women's side in the face without being a hypocrite.

Oh true? Wow, yeah that doesn't sound like something that would improve their chances of retaining him.
All the better for us though!
