Is it true that because Atkins and Close are 3rd year rookies that they can go to the club off their choice as delisted free agents even if they are saying they are contracted. If I remember did Lachie Young leave the Bulldogs and go to North in those circumstances even though they wanted to keep him ?

They are both contracted to the end of 2023

On the topic of Grundy and Hopper's loss in value due to a poor or injury filled year

I'm valuing players at

median games remaining in career (based on player drafted with similar picks with similar games played profiles)
X
Value in the season, (Score/Expected)
X
Position multiplier, (players like inside mids and ruckmen are exposed to stoppages score significantly higher than those who don't, about 50% more for full time inside mids and ruckmen)

Bunch of assumptions/limitation
1. Player will keep the same value for the rest of their career, between two years the correlation coefficient is around 0.52
2. Median games doesn't take into consideration the type of players, just don't have the sample size to do that.
3. draft pick equivalent doesn't take salary into consideration, in theory a high wage should lower the trade value, in the same way a free agent will attract a higher wage.

In the last 12 months Grundy's draft pick equivalent dropped from around pick 10 - 14 to 17 -21

Grundy has moved from the area of high draft pick worth, given that Collingwood are trying to palm him off, even a late 1st rounder seems overs ever if they cover salary.

It is hard to understate how poor Hopper was this year, the average value of a player who was just dropped is 0.60. If the club thinks his underperformance is driven by short term causes, then we can take advantage of his decrease in value, if we get the trade value right.

I said a few weeks ago that I'd happily move him on if the return was half decent.

I just don't see it with him.

If he stays, I hope I'm wrong.

Stephens is worth more to us than the r3 or 4 we would get in a trade. Plus i doubt he wants to leave with selwood retiring he will fight for the spot that will open up.

It's funny how some people thought/think that Bruhn is worth a 1st rounder but Stephens is worth a 3rd/4th.

I'm certainly with you if the return for him is an r4/r4 selection.

If it helped us get Hopper (prob will get him anyway) or Bruhn or a Henry type... I'd be happy to move him on.

Doubtful to happen anyway, just thinking out loud and I'm certainly not convinced that Stephens will be anything more than just serviceable in the future.

Is it confirmed Selwood is retiring?

Is there a player more divisive in the eyes of supporters than CS? Some think he's a dud and some think he's the Joel replacement and future star. Truth is he's probably somewhere in the middle.

No, all he has said publicly is that he’ll decide later in the year. My gut feel is that he’ll retire on a high (Ling and Ottens style) with a flag if we go all the way, and he’ll be strongly tempted to play on if we just fall short.

Not sure a bloke who hasnt played footy for 2 years walks into a side that really should be winning the flag, but if hes prepared to grind away in the reserves for a while and earn his spot later in the season I would take him.

Is McKenna a free agent? How long ago was he on an afl list, 2 years? Shame he falls just short of being able to go back on as a cat b rookie.
But he is a proven afl player and something we lack is a running defender.

Surely James Kelly is our play here. Would know McKenna from his time at the Bombers

McKenna would be an excellent get. Very exciting to watch and would cost us peanuts.

McKenna turns 27 in March next year which is prime.

Isaac Smith turns 34 in December. Zac Tuohy turns 33 in December. Both will need replacing in 1-2 years and play similar roles (although they're both playing incredible football!!!)

At the very worst he would provide us with great depth.

McKenna is a player worth pursuing but the market for him will be strong. He won’t come cheap (contract wise)

Yep and if we win the flag this year Selwood will almost certainly call time.

I agree. Id let stephens fight it out (with whoeever our trade ins are) i wouldnt move him on yet unless he wants to go.
