So Holmes had a poor season? And how does that distinguish him from several others who were regulars last season and this season when available?

You could make a case that we wouldn't have won the flag last year without Holmes, who was the highest rated winger in the competition over the second half of the season, and instrumental in several goals at critical moments.

We're far too quick to dismiss players. Holmes is how ancient - 21 or so? He will get better and we surely need him given our lack of draft clout.

James Jordon has nominated to go to Sydney, which is a real shame not that I thought he would come down the highway but I was hoping he would.

If Swans get Grundy as well, they will be pushing top 4 again next season.
No one wants a bar of sleepy hollow anymore... no longer the destination club.

We need Covid back so that all the city clubs are locked into 5km radius again, and then watch all the players request trades to Gtown! LOL. Bring Dan back. haha, I can't believe I just wrote that. haha

Holmes was solid this year. Just people's expectations were much higher. I think he is going just fine.

You keep saying this but we haven't actually missed anyone.

We were chasing TDK, he decided to stay.

There's no evidence we were ever after Parish, Doedee, Dow, Jordon, Grundy or any of these players.

A token 'Geelong is expected to be interested' in an article isn't enough to suggest we were after these guys.

They're not exactly names who are going to be sliding doors moments, either.

Smith seems legit, but he's contracted and the Dogs seem to have told us and Hawthorn to come back next year.

We'll wait and see how this Thomas thing plays out, too...but the point is, we haven't missed anyone that we were really interested in or pinning our hopes on.

Yep, 100%.

Through my field of work I've met 100s of people who aren't actually bad people, they've just had bad things happen to them, or they've been surrounded by the wrong people.

Many would be surprised how much that can influence someone's actions. It's as the saying goes, 'hurt people, hurt people'.

Nobody's born good or bad, they're a product of their environment, and you eventually reach a point where you're old enough to make your own decisions and have your own views.

Tarryn's reached that age now, and if he's prepared to be a better person then I'm on board 100%.

That's the part that's important. We have all made, and will make, mistakes. It's whether you're prepared to learn and grow from them that will decide if you're good or bad.
I thought you were a nutrition, fitness and exercise physiology guru. Now you are a social worker also. How many degrees have you got?

When was the last time a team recruited a ready made top 5 in the league player like Jeremy Cameron? Or Patrick Dangerfield?

The last true superstar in his prime like that that changed clubs was probably Buddy.

No one can pull a big fish like Geelong can.

I don't know how to put this but I'm kind of a big deal. People know me. I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

With mills yes.

Unsure without mills .

I am with a few of you regarding holmes, he looked good last year and I one of those that think he be our best mid about now. but seem like he struggle a bit without dangerfield and selwood, if he puts in another year like this i be listening offers.
Good at times was about it. I thought the next step was gonna be taken. I was disappointed.
Unfortunately his skillset regarding his kicking is pretty average.
Great athlete Yes. As being a great footballer he has a long ways to go.
And thats the fear i have. If he is the best we have now we are in really big trouble.
If we see another repeat of his 2023 season, his worth would be sweet FA.
Do you sell high if a nice pick was presented??
Can't answer that.
I found Mackie’s comments about looking at our deficiencies over the next few years quite interesting. In my opinion, he was alluding most to our need for a young key forward to replace Hawkins and then Cameron soon after. Could we plan to trade our pick 7 for a future R1 and then make a serious play for Aaron Cadman next year? We would probably need to package 2 x early-ish R1 picks to acquire him.
Cadman has done nothing yet to excite. He’s got a four year deal I think 🤔

Keep the faith mate, things are never as good or bad as they seem.

Let's just say we pick up Thomas and keep him on the straight and narrow.

Suddenly that's a future midfield of Thomas, Holmes, Bruhn, Knevitt, Clark & Conway...with Bazlenka still a chance to make his way down the highway next year.

Throw in a Darcy Wilson/Charlie Edwards for good measure, and we're ready to go again in a couple years.

Let's say the Thomas thing doesn't happen, and we keep pick 7. Take Sanders, or trade back to pick up two of Wilson/Edwards/Stevens and we go hard at a Smith/Butters/Thomas next year.

Same thing again, give it a couple years and we're right back where we belong with one of the best midfields in the game.

There's no need to hit the panic button, this club doesn't let us down. They've got a plan, we just aren't privy to the finer details

depend how high, holmes would have the most value on the market SDK aside, if the club want to go down that route. I mean would you do it for pick 1? multiple picks + holmes for pick 1?

Hopper last year? Grundy last year? Even TDK, you say we were chasing him and we didn't get him, isn't that missing someone we were interested in?

Sometimes it's easy to explain away the ones we didn't get for reasons xyz. But there are plenty of instances where we would show an interest in someone and then not get them. That's not to say we have a bad hit rate. But we really only need enough players showing interest that we can get some in anyway.

I'd also say most clubs, not just ours, would only externally show interest in a player when they think they're a chance of getting that player and have had an indication the player would at least entertain the idea. So it becomes a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy where the only players that clubs are linked to in any substantive way are the ones that are at least somewhat likely to come, so then when they do come it proves that we have a good hit rate at attracting players.

If picking up Jacob f**cking Hopper on a 7 year deal is what's required for us to maintain our title as a 'destination club' then I'm more than happy to let the title go.

You make some valid points, but what's been the case for us this century is if you're coming to Geelong, you're only coming on our terms.

Only Hopper & the Cats will know every detail of the story...but word is we offered him a 'Geelong style' contract (E.g sub market value) and he was on board.

Dimma & Cotchin took him to play golf, added a couple of extra hundred to his contract, and the rest they say is history.

I've always felt we're the opposite where we're happy to admit we'll look at all options. Hence we're linked to everyone because we don't deny speaking with managers.

Showing interest, Chasing and Committing are 3 different things. Reaching out to T Kelly to see if his circumstances look to change with his kids growing up = showing interest. The same way we did with Bowes and his manager well ahead of the Pick 7 conversations. And the exact reason all clubs will put calls to Holmes manager. You plan and show interest anywhere a player would make the club better.

Chasing is where you put a number and pitch to a player, most likely where we were with Hopper, not likely with TDK or Grundy (from what I'm led to believe). If we're measuring hit rates on who clubs chase, none would have a great %.

Committing I think we've proven that once we commit we make it happen. Danger, Jezza & Henry all had people squeeling we paid overs. Worth noting we've done this the other way in supporting players leaving the club, once a commitment is made by club and player we make it happen (and members always squeal we've given them away.) -at least up until now where this Sav talk might be real and not a bluff to pump his value.

After seeing how the Cats have treated Sav two years in a row, players will now think twice about going to Sleepy Hollow,
