Yeah, I stopped listening to the "experts" opinions of upcoming draft pools ages ago. Rather listen to Wells who regularly states that they see opportunity to bring in talent late in any draft.

Last year's draft was roundly suggested to be shallow after the first dozen or so picks. Meanwhile, picks 36 (Mannagh) & 63 (Humphries) are currently preparing to play in a Qualifying Final, having well and truly earned the right to do so.
To be fair when they talk about the draft pool they’re mostly talking about talent coming through the U18s. Wells pulling overaged talent both demonstrates both the weakness of and shows the folly of being over focused on the traditional pathway

He's been a very good pick up. But has a 26 year old ever gone in the top 40 of a draft before?

In most drafts we would've waited until pick 50+ knowing nobody would go for a 26 year old flanker with really talented kids still out there. We were absolutely desperate to get Stewart who was 3 years younger than Mannagh and still didn't feel the need to pull the trigger until pick 40.
The value gap between a pick in the mid 30s and early 50s isn’t worth worrying about. The fact that he has played 10ish games makes in worth it the gap between average wage of a 26 year old and the draftee wage well outweighs the difference in pick value

Yeah, I might have just had my Wells/Mackie goggles on with that one. I probably should have checked who the other teams picked before suggesting it wasn't actually a shallow draft :$

Edit: Just took a look and there are a few outside the dirty dozen that have shown plenty for first year players - Darcy Wilson, Will Graham, Logan Morris & Joel Freijah, plus I'm gonna include Zane Zakostelsky because that is a fantastic name. I don't ever like to admit I'm wrong, so I'm going to need at least another 5 years or so before conceding here (by which time my post will be forgotten and I can pretend I never made it).
For sure a couple more that have come in but my point is more that the description of the draft has more or less matched the outcome

Picking a 26 year old high half forward at pick 36 shows how lowly rated the draft was. He'll give us a few years of solid footy but you don't normally give a top 40 pick for someone whose upside is pretty limited.

It would be fascinating to know where we would've pulled the trigger on Humphries if there was other interest. We clearly knew he wasn't going to be selected by anyone else so could wait to the last pick. It's staggering nobody else was interested especially West Coast letting him slip through their academy.

We took mannagh at 36 because port (who were desperate for a small fwd) and freo had told him they would take him within the next few picks. It wasnt a reflection on the draft pool. And mannagh has heaps of upside as tonight showed.

Wce will kick themselves for humphries but to be fair he wasnt obviously draftable back then.

Stewart is the same example albeit he was younger. Freo and the bulldogs were both keen within a few picks after (stewart didnt want to go interstate) hence we pulled the trigger in r2.

But that in itself is a reflection on the draft pool because a deeper draft Port and Freo wouldn't have taken him that early.

Not so sure. Ports ill conceived trading (look at sav) shows how desperate they were to bring in mature talent they would have chased him regardless and freo were desperate to replace schultz.
But i take your broader point about the draft pool given it stopped inside 65 picks.

Yeah but to me that kind of tells me the talent isn't there to begin with. I just think in a deeper draft he's later or a rookie

He was not your standard 26 year old though.

A fantastic vfl season, then 6 goals and 30+ possessions on a losing team on gf day will get plenty of peoples attention.
If Geelong didn't than the Dogs would have. He'd completed a medical with us, and Milesi (one of our recruiters) openly said they'd draft him if he got to our pick in the 40ties, meaning we would of missed out on Joel Friejah. Great pick up by you guys, even at his age his got years ahead of him and probably just played his best game in an away final.

Friejah has been a good pickup for you guys. Was hoping we’d look at trading back into the draft to get him.

Davidson probably does go as a rookie given history.

If they could stop talking up pike that would be great id like to take him with our rookie pick (when we delist murdoch).

Herbert has been massive for leadership this year and id love to see him drafted to reward effort like atkins was. But im not sure he has enough transferrable afl attributes.
They will push for davies (coll) but hopefully he picks us like bowes. Do pies want keane given his tendency to go back to ireland?
Ideally noble to gc keane to adel davies to us and later picks from us to gc (to match bids) would work. I think luko wants port (who dont have the currency) and they will hold him anyway.

I cant say I have seen much of Davidson but in general, considering Mannagh success, Id think clubs may be prepared to jump earlier. Try to decipher what a mature player is worth is probably dependant on need and where you see them in your system. Even a pick in the R2 ..for a player that steps in and plays R1 ..its cheaper than waiting 4 years to find out if you have something , like Knevitt for example.

If we like what Pike has shown, he has played enough … we should have a solid grasp on him now than im not fussed on what pick we use, Id say we may only have late picks. We seem to be contrarians. Its as if we think….Its a good draft ..so pick values are high ..so lets trade them out for players..eg Smith and Davies and find players with late picks. Pike and whoever.

On Davies .. if he got along with Bowes maybe he can give him a bit of wink. Bowes must be thanking his lucky stars. Gold was playing him the VFL noe has become entrenched , and has played his first final etc. That has to ahvea degree of appeal to Davies. Probably depnds on his personailty. Does he want the big game big city big club experience of Pies ..or our more rounded offering.

I suspect Gold Coast find a way to trade Luc to Adelaide. Sounds like Keane is stayin there now. GC will have a need for list spots with their list reduction ? Make it tricky when they are also bringing in players

I heard a rumour on the Adelaide offer to Lukosius. Large and long.

One would think they have cap room, Tex is probably on his last legs and reduced dollars.. and picks to get it done. Is Adelaide and Port a bit like West Coast and Freo…. some guys on want to play for one not the other? If Luk went to Port ..one would think one or two talls at Port might get itchy feet.

year of the cat …..

If media is to be believed…. Rich is going to end up with a GWS/Gold COast..perhaps Tas Devils….like draft hand this year… and one can see Armstrong playing for them…. The last I heard he was being mention in top 10 ...

So make me wonder who do we pick to replace Hawkins on our list …Do we go for a like for like…If so we pick Sims if he is still there at our pick …. Any other player take your eye?

I think we’ve already replaced him with Neale. The next issue will be looking at life after Cameron. Armstrong would have been absolutely perfect. But we won’t get him.

Sims is an option. One of the Whitlock’s possibly but I’m not confident. I’m not sure that you could take any of those talls mooted to go last first/early second round with real confidence. Armstrong was the guy I identified after seeing him play school footy earlier this year. No surprise to me he’s now in the discussion for top 5. I think he will be very good.
