Back to discussing players that are not currently in their 50’s…..

Jaxson Artemis (WA) looks to have some nice attributes with speed and by foot. Won WA’s MVP in the National Champs yet isn’t seen as a top 35 pick. One to consider.

I haven't seen him play, but his profile reads like a lot of former state MVPs that weren't rated come draft time - Adam D’Aloia, Deven Robertson, James Worpel, Jonty Scharenberg, etc. in that he is well-rounded, or 'average' in most characteristics, but no stand out qualities. Though, as I said, I haven't seen him play.

Pretty hard to get excited about the draft this year. Looking back over our drafts from 2016 on our average yield is just over 2 players that have a career. From the 2022 draft only Jyhe Clark is left on the list. Conway and Knevitt who may or may not make it plus Dempsey from the 2021 draft.

Low chance that we score another Humphries but as supporters we live in hope of what we as Cat supporters have come to view as the Wells special.

The reality is that of the 7 we draft this year 5-6 will have left the club in 2 years. It is a brutal game for young kids (their dreams taken from them so quickly) and the turnover is high.

I’ve only watched the highlights from that same page which don’t give you the full perspective. Those ones you’re named had disposal deficiencies, particularly by foot, but this guy seems to be decent. Has good pace too. There’s clearly something that’s impeding his rating but I’m not sure what it is? Maybe it’s the lack of an “elite” quality as you allude to.

We got our man in Bailey Smith so I'm happy.

Also, Geelong will just go about their business playing finals and poach a superstar from another club anyway. It's what we have done the last 10 years and I'm sure Butters, Reid, LDU and a couple of others are going to be right in the mix.

That's how it is for every club, especially those who are making the finals regularly. It's not a uniquely Geelong experience.

I think most rational supporters know that the vast majority of players drafted aren't going to have significant careers. It's just the nature of the game.

As you say, it's likely only 1-3 will play a significant role at the club over the next decade, but there's a bit of fun in that too.

When the day comes and the 7 players are inducted into the GFC, everyone here will have players out of the 7 that they rate, and those that they do not.

It's intriguing discussion in a boring time of year footy wise, and we can all laugh about it in the future looking back at how right or wrong we were.

I blame the 'draft experts' really for fueling the unrealistic expectations that you mention.

Like I touched on, we're mostly aware that only a finite number of players are going to make it, where as they are comparing every player from pick 1 to the rookie draft to genuine champions of the game.

It's far more realistic (but far less interesting) to say this player is the next Shaun Grigg, James Harmes, or Shannon Byrnes.

All players who had their moments to varying degrees, and you would consider the draft pick a success all things considered...but that doesn't capture the imagination.

The Cats will have a keen eye on Ivisic as a local product, a well-known talent for his tenacity and running capacity as a half-forward/inside midfielder combo, capable of producing a punch with his quick decision-making.

Absolutely true that most draftees don’t have long term sustainable AFL careers at an elite level, but many of those can play 2nd tier semi-pro alongside their day-jobs and do well, without the mind-blowing physical demands of AFL.
Anyone who’s even played a handful of games at the elite level can command some nice coin in local leagues.

Brisbane has made top four a grand final and now a premiership in 3 years and they are about to receive their second no1 pick in the space of 3 years.

They have drafted as well if not better than north

Sure, but they're an outlier throughout history and it's just the luck of the draw when it comes to F/S.

It's not ideal, potentially even unjust...but I personally don't bother worrying about it. We can't change what's happened there, and going full St Kilda B&F speech mode doesn't help anything.

All we can do is look at what our club is doing, and seeing as we don't have a northern academy pumping out first round picks, our numbers are therefore very similar to the vast majority who also don't share that privilege - especially those playing finals - hence the comparison.

Another trend I've noticed over the years is WA draftees don't seem to rate very highly if they haven't played reserves or league level in the WAFL. That might be why Chad Warner slipped to pick 39.

You can’t say we haven’t given kids chances when you see 37 draftees with 0-50 games.

Wonder whether he’s a one off or there’s potential in some other WA lads that is perhaps more untapped than say the Vic boys?

At the stage we will be picking in the draft I’m quite keen on a raft of WA kids. Gerreyn, Artemis, Boxshall, Urquhart and Hayes.

The history of tall forwards taken outside the top 20 is basically horrible. It feels like a massive risk to give up a future first for a tall forward like Gerreyn who has had exposure but not impressed enough to go in the top 25.

I'd prefer to save our future first and go big at a Cadman, JUH, etc type who look ready to become a long-term quality player than play overs for a very speculative draftee.

Thinking giving up Caddy for COS will bite us. A great foward in the draft has not been available to us since Hawk. Remind me what we got for that slide pls

I've looked into this in the past and KPF has a similar average draft pick per player per game to the inside midfield rotations(They are the top 2). There are a lower number of outliers since there are so many fewer KPFs players getting a game then inside mids.

I think we should be less focused on a particular name or more focused on bringing, someone with useable attributes, I think they're are quite a few in this draft, I'm hoping at least one lasts to our first pick.
