I am not Jeff Gieschen, I just believe in looking at umpires and their performances objectively, with putting on my supporter's googles.

Nothing to do with 'supporters goggles' as I have seen him make as many poor decisions for my team as against them.

Have watched him umpire plenty of neutral games as well over the past few years and he constantly makes poor decisions, seems to often freeze when called on to make a decision and his interpretation of the holding the ball rule is often baffling.

They're just pretending to care. It's a thread full of nobody nuff nuffs who collectively know as much about the goal umpires as they can write in the snow. I wouldn't have a clue who were the best performed goal umpires this year. I'm not going to pretend I watch it that closely.
I can tell which people in this thread know what they're talking about and I think they've hit the nail on the head :)

The fact of the matter is that umpires make mistakes. They make multiple mistakes per game, no umpire has a perfect game but they do make more correct calls then incorrect ones.
Your claims that Nicholls constantly makes bad calls and his interpretations are bad are in my opinion highly dubious. AFL Umpires face intense scrutiny from their coaches and if Nicholls is as bad as you say he is then he would not get a game.

Well done Chelsea. have a good game.

as to the Sat night umpires. their performance was so abject, they were never going to get it. on the radio about halfway into the third the commentators decided that the Friday night umpires were in by some margin. rightly so to.

Even when she was clearly wrong?

If she was clearly wrong the video umpire would have called for a review and turned over the score as they did last week. If the video was inconclusive, which it was it goes back to her original decision.

How many of us could identify who the other goal umpires are and whether or not they do a better job? I'm guessing not many.

That said I think Chelsea normally does a pretty good job and seems to have earned a GF spot on merit

It works both ways, yes I agree, Chelsea gets publicly scrutinised more. I do recognise other umpire's faces and some do make more mistakes, some do about as good as Chelsea.

This was always going to happen, its such a great PC wank of a story, fighting adversity, first women to do X, breaking the shackles of a male dominated X, bla bla bla, the worst thing about this is she's not a very good goal umpire, i've thought that ever since i've seen her start, AND she made a huge mistake in a prelim final, but still they picked her anyway.

I'm expecting paper articles about the 'adversity' she had to fight through to get to the AFL, and the 'abuse' she suffers from fans [despite every single umpire being a victim of verbal abuse], and how at one stage she was going to give up her ambition, but fought through the adversity, and how it was worth it.

And she's not even THAT attractive anyway.

That's typically how it goes when they say 'No'...

Why are people continually saying she made mistakes in the prelim?

are you all ****ing stupid?

I'd like someone to put a video up here showing that the ball had fully crossed the line.

I won't hold my breather waiting.

Yeh ok, sure, im wrong because the umpiring department said so...

Good one. Genuine lulz.

Have they released the footage and photographs?

Yes. Watch the following video, particularly the still shot of the left of the split screen. The ball is clearly shown to be still on the line when the Collingwood defender makes contact.

As I posted elsewhere, I reckon Chelsea will be accepting your apologies whenever you'd like to offer them.

can you enlighten all of us as to how you're 100% sure she was correct and no errors were made?
with evidence would be great :)

for someone who doesn't take much notice to goal umpires you must have good eyes

Did you click on the link? It's cued up to about 20 seconds before the split-screen shot that shows the ball clearly still over the line.

If you still can't work it out, just skip to 6.07 in the video. The frozen split screen is at that time point.

And because I know clicking on a link is too hard for some, here's the screencap from the relevant part of the video:

swanspiesprelim_zps6f9fba9b.jpg

In the video, the two images are running simultaneously. Note the ball on the left of screen is still overlapping the line, while the right of screen clearly shows the Pies defender making contact with the ball.

If that isn't conclusive enough for the critics, nothing will be.

Edit: Just saw the response above. Jesus wept.

1. You cannot prove that they're running exactly simultaneously
2. It is still not 100% clear that that is the exact time in which Tarrant touches the ball

The vision is inconclusive. There is no evidence to suggest she was conclusively wrong, but none to suggest that she was conclusively right.

The angle is not directly above the line.

Footage is inconclusive.

Stop taking that dickheads word.

He is wrong 99% of the time.

Exactly. And if you remembered to watch any footy this season you'd know that if it was reviewed the decision would have gone to the umpires. So this whole argument is irrelevant.

I was in attendance at the Gabba for one of her first games, just behind the goals sitting near the away Cheer Squad. It probably would have been about 7 years ago.

As she was making her way to the goalsquare to kick off the game, some clown shouted out "Who ordered the stripper??" She would have most definitely heard.

Big laughs were had, pretty much the whole section I was in. I'm sure she would have copped a fair bit from hecklers in the crowd over the years, well done to her for sticking with it.

Wasnt it the highest score originally?

Either way, chelsea is hawt.

It still doesn't mean that she is right. If a prosecution in a murder trial can't gather enough evidence to prove someone guilty, does that mean that they didn't do it?

It's in the past, we can debunk it as much as possible but there is no conclusive footage to suggest that she is 100% right or 100%, it's a matter of opinion.

FWIW I don't think we should have the Score Review System unless there is appropriate technology to prove whether decisions like this one (and the Chris Tarrant one) are 100% correct.
