When are we going to crack 40,000 for a home game again?

WCE Saturday twilight? Hmmm
North Melbourne Saturday lunchtime? Not too optimistic

Rnd 18 Saturday night vs GWS? Maybe...

Rnd 20 home Showdown. A fair way off
Showdown

Maybe the gws game. Will depend on how our run at the 8 is shaping,

Great:

Rankine. Still waiting on him to just dominate a game but that was close. 13 score involvements (3 goal assists) and 22 disp a real highlight. I'm a tad surprised we haven't thrown him in the middle yet.

Thithorpe: when we needed a spark in the first, he made it happen with two big marks.

Rachele: just electric everytime he got the ball, and that goal in the wet was special

We're really cementing Adelaide Oval as a fortress

Good:

Fog: not a game for the statisticans, but one where he got back to form he was showing for the first 6 week. Everytime the ball was near him, something was happening. Whether a great mark, bustling players out the way or causing panic in the Brisbane defense. Kicking was uncharacteristially off, however he'll get a bag in the next fortnight.

Keays: we needed another player in the clinches and Benny had a big game. Kudos.

Laird showed a bit of '21-22 form. Still hasn't quite hit his straps this year but things are happening.

I had a lot of time for Soligos game. Racked up a good amount of the ball, won some clearances, kicked a nice set shot and had a bunch of smart moments throughout. Mixed in with the occasional moment that he reminds you he's a second year player. A victim of expectation, but bar 2 games, he's playing well this year and building well to becoming a full time insidd mid.

Murray was an absolute monster in defense and gets a big scalp.

Worrell had some very nice moments with the highlight being that potentially game saving tackle on Danniher on the fourth where he read the candy sell.

Milera was given more responsibility in the absence of Smith and thrived.

Sholl had a really good first half.

Jones stepped up in the absence of Hinge and played well. Took a big step towards cementing himself as a long term outside midifelder seeing he just flexed he can fix a hole in defense when they pop up.

Pedlar had a very similar game to Fog. Didn't accumulate, but things happened everytime the ball went near him. This kid is going to be a star once he's had another 2 preseasons.

Hard to rate:

Tex couldn't get into the game at all and yet got three goals.

Sloane was putrid in the first half, but won multiple key contests in the last.

Dawson ditto. Wasn't his usual self but still did a fair bit of good.

Bad:

I guess it's still a reminder we're a way off being a genuine contender. We played superbly and that could have easily been a brave loss with Brisbanes kicking.
Agree with all this except.
1. Dawson got 3 clear Brownlow votes tonight to be definitely leading at this stage. amazing game, can’t agree there.
2. They didn’t kick that badly, our defense was awesome when they got their dominant periods. Most of their misses were through pressure.

We handled the conditions better than Brisbane.

That's another milestone.

Although we still didn't have as much run and carry as I'd like, although Pedlars run down the wing was really good and exactly what I'm looking for, our movement forward seemed to adapt to the conditions quicker than Brisbane.

Brisbane seemed to still be trying to play perfect football at times and it was a very slippery ball.

We adjusted when we needed to, which is a good sign.
Good practice for next weekend too.
Will be slippery in Darwin.

Lots of reasons for a low crowd this afternoon but it should be a worry.

There was a time where low 40's was a poor crowd

I think eventually once we settle the side down to become contenders, one or maybe two of Keays/McHenry/Sog/Murphy are out.

Really only need two guys in those roles.

Opens up spots for guys like Worrell and even Gollant, even with Tex in the side still.

I see Soligo on a very different level from the other three

We’ve had a bit of wet weather practice this year

Id go even further. Filthy weather, ball is a piece of soap taking our precise kicking out, we put numbers deep to choke it up, they build the wall and get repeat entries.

Devils advocate - they get a goal, resets to the middle, we carry on with it instead?
Yeah I dunno about that. It felt like they were also on top in CBAs that qtr, but I guess there weren't many of them.

The commentators said it at one point. We just needed to force a stoppage stop to try and stem the repeat entries. Eventually we did and I think the quarter turned a bit from there.

Leading the brownlow? Don’t think so, has had a quiet month and a bit.

Felt like they controlled the 1st and third quarters. We got late goals in those qtrs against the run of play which ultimately was crucial.
We stemmed the majority of the bleeding in those quarters, which was vital

Sure, Bris missed a few they should’ve slotted, but their generally inefficient scoring conversion going I50 was a credit to our defence

Yet another gift from the VFL. They really love feeding us sh!t sandwiches.

Yeah maybe. First for sure. I said to my mates at quarter time Brisbane will probably keep us at bay with a two to three goal lead all game.

Then we dominated the second, and even the third it always felt like we would keep them at bay. And we did.

When I say control, I mean that it never really felt like we would lose after midway through the secind. And countered their scoring

I get what you are saying. The Lions did generate a lot of play, for no scoreboard reward.

I don't think that is all luck though. Our backline was great. Few easy chances. Charlie Cameron scoring from scraps.

We will see I suppose. AFL site had him equal with Daicos on their predictor during the week.
to be honest I couldn’t give a rats toss bag as it’s the stupidest award ever, I was just making the point that he was easily our best tonight and has been all year. The dude us a deadest star. Amazing job by our recruiters.

I rate Cook, but he has the same issues around defensive intensity that Sholl has. And Sholl has genuinely tried to improve that side if his game.
Cooka been great this year I reckon and sticks way more tackles.

Importanly his physicality has been great this year too from the games I watched.

The thing about Soligo is he can play anywhere , he’s that smart

I’d like to see Jones back on wing asap when hinge is back
I would like us to try Jones, Hinge & Soligo as our 3 wingmen at some stage as they all offer different attributes.

They beat a team that smashed us the week before

Will be relaxed and acclimatised while we go from 12 degs to 27 degs

For me it will be a minor miracle if we win , it’s a bonus in my mind
Acclimatised?..

its been pretty chilly here on the goldy in the last few weeks..

the problem with the NT wont be that it will be warm.. it will be the perfect temp to play footy..

the problem is that it will be a night game and the humidity turns into dew on the ground and it becomes a slip and fumble fest..

so in a way.. todays game was perfect practice for next week.
