Review Good, Bad, Ugly vs North Melbourne

Been getting stuck in to Jenkins a lot lately. It's hard not to. He's the league's tallest soft outside receiver. Refuses to jump at the ball - especially when he's inside forward 50. It's frustrating as anything to watch. Then, when the ball hits the deck, he shimmies away from it, getting out of everybody's way, regardless of their jumper colours. Terrible tackler, too. Kicks some bloody nice goals, but he's half the player he should be, if that. Fire the hell up and attack the bloody contest! He's been exceptionally poor these last two weeks. McKernan is equally frustrating, but at least he bloody jumps at the ball when it's dropping on his head. As much as midfield speed continues to be a drafting priority, it's becoming very clear that we need to look for another tall forward option - especially with old man Podsiadly's retirement not far off.
not sure why we're back to timid Jenkins, when he's in real good form he doesn't mind crashing in but he's definitely out of sorts at the moment.

I can't think of anything that could have been the trigger.

Good
After a shaky start at home we have now banked a few decent wins. So important that this becomes a real home ground advantage for us.

In the interest of putting our stamp on the ground, I hereby dub the north eastern pocket the Eddie Betts Pocket.

Much like the Tony Hall Pocket at AAMI, forever to be known by this name and a permanent reminder that it is our ground.

Good:
getting the win, when I didn't think we would.
Smith, pods, betts, kedge, brown, thommo, Jacobs... The list is long.

Bad:
Umpires made some absolute howlers tonight.

Ugly
Brian Taylor. What a bloody Muppet, some of the rubbish that comes out of that man's mouth is just ridiculous.[/QUOTE]
Missed the commentary being at the game, but everyone was celebrating Dwayne doing the Weagles game...

Good:

Already been mentioned. Thought otten was also good today though.

Bad:

Jenkins: if were serious about creating selection pressure and rewarding Sanfl form, then smack comes in. This will send the right message for the entire group.

Ugly: our ability top defend the fast break. For me this is the new trademark of great team's and we suck at it. Port are masters at it. We need to work on this in out next off season as the game moves to one of quick counter attacks

Ugly - holding the ball rule. I just don't get it anymore.
Crows will lose next week.
Good - smith BOG again, the only one who looks to attack every time.
Bannister had a different interpretation to the other umpires.

I got the feeling he is pissed Betts left Carlton...

Smith the standout, what a great season he is having.

Just about everyone else played their part - even Reilly, without anyone really dominating.

Great team performance.

Ugly: Bloody umpiring was shocking, I will watch the replay but it seemed diabolical at the game.

Good win and performance by the boys:thumbsu:

Smith: such a gun. He's got to be leading our BnF. LOVE HIM:hearts::hearts::hearts:

Laird: was I the only one who thought he had a good game and was surprised at Harvey's stats? I thought Lairdy played quite well on him. He may have got a bit of it but he wasn't all that influential, other than one or two bits of play where he got a few touches in succession and goaled or set others up. Laird at least made him earn it. Side note: I'd love it if Dangerfield got the protection from the umps for minor holds on the jumper that Harvey got tonight!

Kedge: North Melbourne specialist. He loves a bit of Roo!

Betts: brilliant goal. Haters have NFI... that ball never went completely over the line!!!

However, North were terrible, absolutely terrible... and given how woeful they were, we only won by SIX measly goals so I feel kind of robbed of the opportunity to watch my team absolutely smash and humiliate a side live... Hawthorn/Sydney would have won that game by 80+ points and for that I blame two things:

1. THOSE ****ING GREEN MAGGOTS (worth between 4-6 goals against at least).... what an absolutely despicable, inept, pathetic, incompetent, amateurish, substandard (running out of adjectives here!!!!) display tonight by a bunch of petty little men... North can thank them for at least four of their goals from soft frees plus a couple of shots we were robbed of from frees against plucked from nowhere, not to mention the ones they DIDN'T give to us for similar acts (e.g. the Linsday Thomas/Andy Otten free happened about 5 minutes later at our end AND NO WHISTLE OF COURSE:rolleyes: disclaimer: neither should have been frees but where's the consistency?!)... I'll watch the replay with interest for a more accurate count but that's what I can recall atm.

2. Ball movement and forward structure (IMO costs us another 2-3 goals)... it sounds picky after a win but I still think the way we structure up forward and move the ball holds us back. I don't know whether it's instruction or the players themselves but our forwards just seem to sit there in the F50, gesturing for it to be bombed on top of their heads.... move... lead... DO SOMETHING that creates space and opportunities to take an easy mark on the lead FFS. Watch Hawthorn/Port, both these sides constantly lower the eyes and look to hit a leading target. We don't do this enough. I know Sando has a thing about "depth of entries" so it feels like it's a coached thing.

Excuse the rant... I am just so livid at tonight's umpiring and need a vent!

McKernan can't play up forward and JJ still kicked a few. Still more than spud McKernan

Which number was he?
2 - paid most of the frees is the 1st half.

One of the umpires was "play on" / no decision & 3rd umpire gave us most of the frees.

Would like to see an umpire FF/FA breakdown, as should lead to banning certain umpires from certain teams or just get rid of them!

In the last quarter it was like the umpires had a 31-40 margin bet on with the Indian bookies & were going to everything in their powers to win the bet...

The Good:

-McKay - One of the best games I have seen him play for the club. Was surprisingly aggressive and relentless at the contest. Having a much better year this year

-Sloane - BOG by a mile.

-Jacobs

-Smith

-Brown

-Talia

-Pods - Wish you could lop 5 years of his age. Concerning that he is our best option as the 2nd tall forward and then daylight.

-Betts - Great 1st half.

-Otten - Welcome back. Underrated player.

-Standing ovation for Macca.

The Bad:

-Umpiring. Was like the 2012 prelim final all over again. How many free kicks did they get in front of goals. The Brown holding the ball was a shocker.

-Jenkins - That 2nd genuine tall forward position has yet to be recruited. Dumb, soft and minimal football instinct.

-Martin - Enough already - jesus.

-Laird - Love you little guy but the old man gave you a lesson tonight.

That one on jaensch was close to worst decision of the year. Muppets.

If we are serious about changing our culture and creating an environment that drives high performance and healthy competition, this is the type of change we need to make. I'm sick of the Australian cricket team philosophy of selection we seem to have.
