Good : we did what was needed. Harley Reid is going to be something special. It wouldn’t be far fetched to say he will be a multiple Brownlow winner.

Ugly : Ben Keays would have to be the most selfish footballer in the AFL currently. 9 of his 14 goals this season has come from others giving it to him in the goal square when they have been only 20 metres out themselves and easily kicked a goal, like Burgess on the weekend. Instead of him looking to pass it off he tries another kick around the body, this time under minimal pressure and other players to pass to.
The crowd booing Harley whenever he got the ball. Why?? This is only the second time we’ve played against him ( pre-season match) and he hasn’t been dirty or an idiot. Really disappointing to hear.

I think calling Keays selfish is a bit of a stretch.

He works very hard off the ball to make himself 'on' for those kicks.

He has many brain fades a game, lacks the basic kicking skills (although that set shot goal was nice), among other things but I don't feel calling Keays selfish, let alone "the most selfish in the AFL" is correct.

I don't think it's a stretch

I won't say most selfish in the league because I don't watch enough games, but he definitely gets blinkers on and his first option is too often 'trying to do it all himself' rather than give off - The kick that got smothered against Collingwood that directly lead to the De Goey goal was the perfect example - He had a free team mate front and centre 15 metres away needing to be handballed too, not an extravagant, blind around the corner snap attempt at goal (? or whatever he was attempting)

I cant remember if it was against Brisbane or Essendon, but he had a shot for goal from 45 out on the boundry (with his left foot on the boundry side) which is extremely difficult kick instead of squaring to Rachele who was open about 20 out

It's things like this that will give him the selfish tag, in spite of the good work he does do

Needs to know his limitations more and give off when the better options are there

Would you call Laird a better option?

Anyone that calls for the ball when his teammate has taken a mark almost directly in front only 20 metres out is selfish. He does it a lot. As I said 9 of his 14 goals this year have come from that. The other 5 were genuine forward goals.

I haven't gone and checked but I don't think most of them are when the player has taken a mark. It's more that they are running in, are confronted by a player, draw them and then pass it off to Keays. Turns a 90% chance into a 100% chance.

Not worth building a side around, but it still provides value.

Almost every one is from a mark. It doesn’t turn it into 100% success. It actually lessens the chance, it’s another disposal that could go wrong plus Keays slipping at the wrong time which he nearly did on the weekend. The coaches should really be pulling them all up over doing it.

How many of these has he missed?

Of course it improves the chance. Kicking it from the square with no opponent in front of you is as good as a certainty. Even slipping over won't cost you there, as Keays demonstrated.

Receiving the handball.

I just think there are times that Keays doesn't play the percentages and goes for harder shots/attempts beyond his capabilities when better options are around

That is what gives the 'selfish' vibe

Maybe it's just lack of awareness

What did Reid do that impressed you so much? 14 disposals, 7 of them frees. One speccy mark.
You may well be right, but I wouldn't call multiple Brownlows based on that poor performance. Admittedly he was hampered by O'Brien's dominance in the ruck and the amount of hitouts to advantage he achieved.
Reid looks like being the next umpires' darling. Some of his frees were plain ridiculous.

Yes, he seemed to get frees for performing high fend-offs.

Oh come on.
Almost all if not all were frees from him already in possession.

It was more seeing his potential than his disposal rate. For a first year player playing in one of the worst teams of 2024 and almost carrying the whole team on his back was impressive. He has a beautiful kick, good hands, explosive speed, brute strength, great awareness. He never gave up and tried to will his teammates to step up, which they failed.
None of his fend offs were high, all in the upper chest. He may well be an umpire favourite which doesn’t mean he won’t he a remarkable player. I would have him in our side in a heart beat.

I think Sholl has demonstrated he isnt the worst player when in form. Problem is consistency. When he is bad he stinks. He needs to close the gap between the bad and the good when he isn't in form. I do think he is showing that he can be a regular in the side when in form.
He's someone we need to manage when sore too.

If people only watched one game of Reid's, and it was the game on Sunday and didn't think that Harley Reid is going to be an absolute superstar, then I'm not really sure what they would classify as talent.

For a lot of the second half it was Adelaide vs 17 witches hats and Harley.

He’s got everything you want in a footballer, skills, poise, speed, toughness, smarts, goal kicking ability and can take a hangar

I'm not sure how 'constantly free in the goal square' is a negative. If it's selfish behaviour team mates are free to ignore him.

Also he slipped over after kicking the goal and turning at full speed to celebrate. There was no chance of missing.
