Awesome melt šŸ˜
Can't wait for some games up in Cairns, poker at the casino, bit of footy, eat a few mud crabs & prawns. Jump in the pool to wash the sweat off, down a few coldies.
Plenty of supporters up here in Qld would love to see them play live more often, come on up & for you I'll even ..

And almost guaranteed a 10 goal loss

I have no doubt your intel is correct but do you think a 7/2/2 (plus Gather Round) is in the long term interest of the Hawthorn Football Club? In effect it would make us the Wests Tigers of the AFL.

That said, I have no problem with playing a game in Cairns (especially around the bye round) as Hawthorn support (and AFL more generally) in FNQ is substantial.

But to keep a presence in Tassie, growing a new base in Queensland and expanding from the eastern suburbs into the south/east suburbs stretches limited resources widely.

Surely we ditch Launceston for Cairns and try and sell a 7 (or 8) MCG home package with 1 or 2 Marvel games (with reserve seating) and 2 games in Cairns?

But back on topic, how lucrative is the Northern Queensland market for talent?

Also like to see us forget the ā€˜we are south east Melbourne teamā€™. Chasing fans 6000 km away and ignoring the rest of Melbourne?

The state LNP is far more regional focused compared to the incumbent, should work in the AFLā€™s favour especially if it drums up local retail (the National Retail Association is side by side with the Qld LNP - even share employees)

Cairns is a fairly safe ALP area though so letā€™s hope the new government donā€™t mind the money being spent in areas they canā€™t pork barrel,

When was the last time a hawks team played well in queensland? Seems like a crazy idea. Also thereā€™s three kids and a dog at the vfl game. Cant see the economics either

Comparing a VFL game to a fully fledged AFL game is a bit silly. Attendances for AFL games at Cairns have been 8,000-10,000 and thatā€™s with clubs who have put zero effort into the community.

Challenge with FNQ is the 7 hours of flying time youā€™re adding to the players loading twice a year. Like 2 extra trips to Perth. Not the end of the world but also not ideal.

Youā€™d probably get in the AFLā€™s ears and do one post-bye. Fly up early, get into the community, climatise etc. play Saturday night and ensure we have a Sunday game the week after.

So when was the last time a hawks team played well in Queensland? I canā€™t think of one. Itā€™s not like for like 72% winning in Launceston. Itā€™s the move of a club desperate for moneyā€¦which we are continually told we are not

Edit. 2 good games in 25 years. And some almighty smashing

Settle down tough guy - interesting words from the person with the hyperbolic claims that anyone at the Hawks considering a Cairns option ā€˜should be shotā€™.

Way to play the man than address the facts too - Iā€™ll take the ad hominem attack as a concession that it was you, and not Tops, who was talking out of their arse.

Behave yourself.

Your making this out to be the crime of the century. I'm sure the poster did so in good faith, but the thought that conversations between the respective state governments were common knowledge is infantile at best and downright daft at worst.

Go walk the dog or something.

I wasnā€™t arguing that point - I was arguing the economic/crowd point.

We are an asset and cashflow rich club at the moment - but we are about to lose a very lucrative major sponsor arrangement. Iā€™d rather not look a gift horse in the mouth - if we can get enough games here and play one in Launceston and one in Cairns and keep the revenue flowing in then Iā€™m all for it.

Tops didnā€™t say it was common knowledge - he was letting people know what heā€™s heard. Heā€™s a poster with a good track record and is respected by those posters who are close to the club/attend trainings etc. Heā€™s good enough to share the info he does and doesnā€™t deserve some twat talking down to him as a result. Itā€™s the reason he doesnā€™t share his intel on trading/player management so Iā€™d rather clowns like you not drive him further underground. I get far more out of Tops posting than anyone has ever got out of your 38 paragraph post-game waffles.

Everyone also forgets the economics of playing melbourne particularly marvel are significantly better than when hawks first went to Tassie.

Itā€™s like the club has tunnel thinking on needing these ā€˜elsewhereā€™ games. And they also deliberately market just to south east of Melbourne. Wake up and include the rest of Melbourne, one of the fastest growing populations in australia

Club admin needs some disruptive thinking. Nowhere else will replicate Tassie

Are you saying the club wouldnā€™t be aware of the economic advantages of playing in Melbourne vs playing elsewhere? Iā€™m fairly certain they would. And of course we focus on the SE of Melbourne - itā€™s a growth corridor and the only other club out there is St Kilda - so effectively we are the only AFL side out there.

Long term vision is required.

We want a club that is known throughout Australia, not just known as a Melbourne club. We need to create a national identity, letā€™s not be selfish and restrict or presence to vic.

Itā€™s limiting. Cant think why. The big 4 donā€™t do it

Cairns has 1/40th the population of Melbourne ns very limited potential for growth.

With a return to being a top club onfield, and more MCG games, we can turn the Big4 into a Big5. That is the opportunity cost of playing games in small markets.

I'd much prefer to be playing in say Maroochydore.

But if we end up with 2 home games in Cairns then hopefully we get them both in the winter school holidays.

I'll happily spend a week in Palm Cove / Port Douglas.

Might actually be a selling point for our players - every week you get a winter escape to FNQ.

Gold Coast seem to be making their week in Darwin work for them.

Collingwood are keen to play consecutive matches on the Gold Coast (Away against Suns & Home against someone else)

Collingwoods thinking is 3 matches in SEQ gives them a great opportunity to grow their brand... not sure it needs growing but anyway that's what the Pies are thinking.

Play an extra game in Perth, stay a week and have a home game. Always had a good following and drag someone like the bombers across the country for fun.

I doubt the WA government are going to pay us to do that though.
