There is absolutely no chance we land JUH.

Throwing our hat into the ring may pressure the Doggies to pay more than they would otherwise like to, which may mean Smith is forced out (to us?).
There's always a chance. Don't think it's overly likely, but you never know.

Far stupider calling it the dumbest call 13 days in. We'll see, reckon his output will come back down considerably this season.

As it sits, Larkey is a good player but while being one of the most targeted forwards in the league he's not a great mark, doesn’t set up his team mates overly well and doesn’t do much else around the ground. Gunston has never kicked >60 goals in his career but I would take any of his seasons >40 goals over Larkey's 70 odd last season.
True it’s early to call it that but Jesus the guy was a pick 73 and kicked 70+ goals in a shite team with no KPF help. And Ben Brown has kicked 60+ goals 3 years in a row and won a flag. A lot of players would take that career in a heartbeat.

I reckon a forward line with Larkey at full forward and Lewis at CHF would be a force to be reckoned with.

Both picks in the 70s as well!

Larkey is a player I would pay a $1 million for, a proven talent just entering his prime.

OK so assuming Reeves Nash Worpel Newcombe still take the majority of centre square bounces. Who’s the next players in who start outside the square? What are the options?
Basically the mobile HF and HB and wing players and a couple of bench spots
I’m coining it this way cos I percieve the game plan to be about superior run and spread. More than just the two wing positions

I’m thinking Sicily Weddle CJ Mitchell Impey Masso Amon Maginness bmac off the back
And Moore Butler Bruest Ginnivan Watson McKenzie Husthwaite C MacDonald Ward Morrison off the front

That’s 18 players into 9 positions plus 2 on the bench. You’d think Day and Wingard would slot back in when fit. I’m still thinking of Stephens as a centre square player mainly

The "big four" of our midfield are clearly Newcombe, Worpel, Nash and Day.

Ward and Mackenzie will be next in line IMO. I expect Ward would have been getting some more time in there naturally, but with Day out for a while he will surely take up the slack.

Don't sleep on Connor Macdonald.

And Cooper Stephens might yet be the surprise packet (of sugar) in 2024.

Yeah I'd like to see MacDonald get a run. Based on last year though it was Ward and Mackenzie ahead of him. Even Hustwaite got a chance very late in the season, whilst MacDonald didn't.

Doubt Stephens gets close to the side TBH. He will need to look a lot more impressive at VFL level first.

Larkeys output is very strong... he's fairly plain & not very exciting to watch imo.

are his highlights actually decent and I'm totally wrong?
Could say the same thing about the great man who wore number 19 for the Hawks back in the 80s and 90s.

Dunstall wasn't a highlight reel like Gary Ablett Senior but bloody hell was he effective.

Give me output over flashiness any day of the week.

Dunstall got four premierships and Ablett got none. Even Buddy only got two and he was partnered with Roughie who got four.

Hearing good things about Stephens this pre season. It may have finally clicked for him.
Time is running out - it is this season or bust. Same draft as Day and just three picks later. Shows how serendipitous the draft an be. One has played over 50 games and has a PCM. The other has managed just five undistinguished games over the same period.

JUH is probably wishful thinking, but he’s a player that you find the draft capital for if he wants to join.

3 firsts isn’t that outrageous. Split our first for two later ones, done. I doubt the dogs would want that though, they’d prefer our earlier pick with the option.

In terms of our list build, a high quality key forward would settle our forwards for 4/5 years at least as there’s a lot of good young players around.

It’s hard to judge a player in such a bad team. He kicks more goals than Lewis currently but I’d say his all round game is more limited. I suspect he will score less goals as they improve, not more. At the moment he’s the only target and generally the team is down by 10 goals at half time, don’t think the opposition defence pays a whole lot of attention to their forward line.

Bung was hell boring but it rained goals & that was fun.

Even more data to support output over flashiness.

Even our coach wasn't a particularly flashy player (was not bursting out of packs or kicking bags of goals like Judd or Dusty) but I've never seen a player do his role (extractor / distributor) with as much consistency or effectiveness.

The coaches like Sugar at his best.

Glass half full, better now with the opportunity to gear up for round one with the young guys pre seasoning on the ball.
Pun intended

Have to wonder if he has had any lingering complications with the leg he broke in his draft year (2019). Also important to remember that he's go traded very late in the trade before last so he didn't have much time to wrap his head around having to pack his locker and make the move to the good guys. Ideally it would've been great to see him make a push and get a game or two last season but one has to suspect that Sammy didn't want to disrupt the harmony we had going on in the midfield.

The kid just needs to keep pushing hard and be ready when his number is called.

His body work to postion himself for a mark had to be one of the best that I've ever seen do it. If you gave him front position then it was night night and another goal for the Hawks. How spoilt were we to have had him lining up at FF and then to have Dermie lining up at CHF.

I agree - he was not in the least boring to watch - explosive on the lead, great hands and a superb preparation and kicking action.
