Autopsy Hawks vs The Pusscats

The season has many twists and turns ahead, however this is an enormous start. Geelong had the same win loss record last year and consider themselves a premiership contender.

The ultimate round 1 performance. We can only get better. An 8 point game with percentage solidified. Keep rolling Hawkies!

On a serious note, I loved how Burgoyne took it upon himself to personally introduce Cockatoo to the 'finer' points of AFL footy. Absolutely smashed him on at least three occasions. In Shaun we trust!

Almost child abuse there... every time the young lad went near the pill, Burgers dropped his strides and spanked him silly. A painful lesson learnt by the newbie.

Hard to believe they won 2 out of the 4 quarters and we still won by 10 goals. Could have been 100 plus if we had our kicking boots on.

Also hard to pick my favourite highlight between Poppy's mark, Roughy's goal, Cyril's mark or Cyril's handball!

Nice way to get going. Competitive first quarter to shake the cobwebs away. Blow them away in the next two and slip it back to 2nd for a relaxing final term.

Well what an era we are in! Unbelievable to watch this time play, true greatness. Even though some of the former Geelong greats are now embarrassing themselves (e.g Steve Johnson who never misses an opportunity to remind us what a clown he is) it was still a fantastic way to open the season with a 10 goal flogging of a top 4 side from last year. Great to see Jedi Anderson on the track. Well done Hawka's.

What Burgoyne did to Cockatoo today might actually be the making of the kid. I'm afraid we've actually done him a favour.

Ceglar, Pop and Rough set the tone early. Cegs and McEvoy looks a right fit. Worked well with each other. Cegs dropped a couple of marks late but his first half was brilliant.

Burgoyne in the second and the third. What a player. He's like Rioli in the back half. Doesn't need 20+ touches but can turn a game.

Gibbo even better with a free reign to do whatever he wants.

Lewis continues to be our #1 midfielder. Hodge got better as the game progressed. His big hit on Guthrie left him gasping the whole game. Mitch was on fire until he got sniped. Still played a solid one behind the ball. Langers started the year well should have kicked 2 though.

Thought Breust had a pretty quiet 5 goal game. Took some nice marks but a few cheapies.

That was pure football. Pure team football.

Everyone played their part. We worked for each other, we covered each other and we just drove the screws in once a few cobwebs were blown out.

Fantastic win.

Doc Larkins (fwiw) says Shiels taken off as a precaution, good management, and is a good chance for next week

Doc larkins? That means Shiels is in doubt for the season.

What a fantastic way to start the season. So many superlative but so many threads to absorb.

The obvious:

Hodge, Burgoyne and Lewis: Ageing better than your favourite red.

Anderson: Only had glimpses, but they were eye opening ones. How on earth does a kid that size hit so bloody hard.

Langford: Toiled all day with sadly no scoreboard reward. Good start after his breakout season.

Lake: A presence all day. Shows no sign of ageing also.

Gibson: He is relishing being able to roam around the ground. So am I.

Breust: Early yips more than answered by a big bag of goals. Has bulked up a bit too I feel - won't be manhandled as much this year.

McEvoy: Starting to find his groove in the Hawks lineup. Will become a vital cog.

Hill: Looking like he is adding vision to his speed and great disposal by foot. Showing signs of becoming elite.

Roughead: Like a Rioli - but hits harder.

Rioli: I can forgive the misses when the game was over - because when it counted he delivered all over the field. We are so much better a side when he plays. He adds a level of dynamism that, despite our depth of talent, no other player brings to the table.

Edit: I knew I'd forget someone:

Puopolo: Shameful to forget him. Remember when some tipped he wouldn't be best 22 even 12 months ago? There'd be crickets if you said that now.

Fantastic win.

We did look a bit rusty and missed a few snaps we should have got, scary for the comp if we can only get better. The boys looked fit though, Cereal was on fire, still get nervous when I see him going for a run through the center, but if he stays on the park for the season wow wee. Essendon better brace themselves, could be a flogging of biblical proportions.

Frawley has some work to do. He's not running to the right spots, which is leaving his team mates confused - both his link runners and his intended targets.
Just nit picking, but I thought this stood out in what was otherwise an exceptional performance. Our stoppage work was great, and left them floundering.

That third quarter was stunning football. It's shame we couldn't covert more in the second half.

Breust needs to back himself in more from the set shots rather then passing it. He could've easily finished with 6 or 7 goals.

Awesome.

Really interesting to see that we chose to bomb the ball into big boy all day, and very rarely did he try to mark it, was always tapping down to the crumbers.

We didn't go to gunston or roughy at all really.

Not sure how often we played with Breust, Rioli and Puopolo last year, but we really seemed to play to them as a strength.

Frawley looked alright to me in the contest but in space he was caught out of position too many times. Learning a new system so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Still liked his dash. Atleast he has some balls to take the game on. Shame about his kicking it's shocking.

Just having a laugh at all the Cats fans on the main board whingeing about that tackle at the end. They are calling Duryea and Burgoyne all sorts of things. I've admired the Geelong Football Club over the years ... but some of their supporters are just dead set tossers.

Gotta be kidding me. I'm sorry, but Doc's tackle on Bartel was spot bloody on. When it happened, I just shouted "cracking second effort". Not high, pinned the ball, caused incorrect disposal. Just happened, that's it. Bartel just didn't think Doc would be on his arse so quickly after his first effort.

Though Doc had an absolute ripping last quarter. When we switched off a bit, he made several great intercepts and his disposal was super clean and composed.
