No they haven't. The AFL have nothing against Hawthorn at all. The AFL likes parity so would be loving the parity but to suggest they have "orchestrating this for a decade" is immature. There is no conspiracy theory - we have had a fantastic run and we are losing because this is what happens in a salary cap league unless you're Tom Brady and the Pats. People are cheering because they love an underdog and hate seeing the same team dominate- fair play

That's not the way I see how the media is responding to our demise. They are all partying!

.................

No it is not, 1982-1994 is the most successful period in clubs history
Correct, my comment should be missing the ten part from it. The statement more relates to our threepeat which is something even the team through the 80's wasn't able to achieve. Different times these days so hard to compare but winning three in a row is something only a champion team can achievement.

Geelong 40+ was money for jam yesterday. At least my betting account is a bit healthier this morning.

I don't have any expectations for the rest of this season, just hope that we don't become the first side since the 22 round season was introduced in 1970 to go 0-22. We've already had two duck egg seasons in our history (1928 and 1950), but those were in 18 round seasons.

I think I saw every loss in 1952, if not all, then almost all, and I never want that experience again.

We started the game as if we still had the elite kicking skills from our "premiership years." (Now that's a term many supporters of other clubs can't use freely.) However it is obvious that we don't have the personal skill to deliver the ball with the same accuracy now. In the first half this destroyed us, but Geelong's poor goal kicking kept us in the game.

It is going to be quite a few years before we are back fighting for another flag, and we need to give a handful of games to our youngsters to find out just who could be a major part of out turn around.

I fear giving Rough the captaincy, (for sentimental reasons) was an error, as Hodge is still the most inspirational player on our list.

A few players may be more beneficial playing with the youngsters at Box Hill, than trying to keep up in the first's.

I don't think an ambitious bunch of young hopefuls would have capitulated as we did yesterday. That last quarter was one of the most painful 30 minutes I have ever watched on TV.

Did you watch the 3rd quarter? Langers and Hodge were the reason we fought back. I have no love affair with Langers, I'm merely pointing out at the moment, he's one of the few putting his head over it and playing Clarko football (going when it's his turn).

Is Will Langford going to be the answer moving forward? Probably not, unless he's surrounded by 2-3 A grader users and then you can either hide him or he might not get a game. But the last two weeks, Langford has kept fighting, kept trying and in the hole we are in atm, that's all you ask from your bottom tier players. There's several blokes getting paid a lot more than Will Langford, with 2-3 Premiership medals doing a lot less.

I don't get the love affair with Premiership medals and past deeds giving senior players an out. If only they copped half the hysteria Vickery and Langford do on this board it would be refreshing. But that is half the problem with Hawthorn, too many people comfortable with and living in the past.

Shiels was useless tyesterday. No leadership and very poor disposal efficiency!

Shiels wasn't great like most of them but was infinitely better than Langers IMO. That's not to be taken as a compliment to Shiels either.

Yea I watched the game ...... had a nice view from P10. He might have had a burst in the 3rd but overall was noticeable more for his lack of doing anything. He's not alone mind you.... Plenty of team mates.

It's just tiring every week reading Langers has a crack. He's still getting no where near enough of the ball and doing nothing with it when we do.

Unfortunately with both he and Shiels as 2 of our 4 more regular mids, with Mitchell and O'Meara, we can not expect to be winning too many games of footy.

I actually feel sorry for all our forwards who have to suffer the ball use going forward and our completely dysfunctional system of bringing the ball forward. Not sure how they're even meant to find a scoring opportunity.....and that's when they actually find them self with the good fortune of being allowed to be in the forwardline, which they seem to be all too infrequently

All I can take out of yesterday's game is that we're going to miss Hodgey so much when he retires. Arguably the greatest leader this club and the game has ever seen.

Agreed.. Tucky wasn't bad as a pure leader, but agree it's really hard to line anyone up against Hodgey. During games he clearly still is the captain, he is the one with the most direction and vigour, chest puffed, clean skills, run straight and direct. Brilliant man

I was forgiving of Langers but we seriously can not play both he and Shiels in the same team, with both of those guys along with JOM and Titch our ball use by foot in the middle of the park is diabolical. Titch and JOM are better than both of those boys, but still far short of elite.

Question, has Clarko has tweaked the gameplan to suit the next generation players, and if so, why are the older players (bar Hodge) taking so long to adapt?

I have followed the Hawks since the 1950s and have watched the good times and the bad times. Most importantly I have celebrated 13 premierships in my lifetime which I suspect no opposition supporter can claim.
Unlike some other posters I am looking forward to the rebuild over the next few years as I have during previous rebuilds. Watching kids like Matthews Knights Franklin Mitchell and Hodge grow into champions of the game is part and parcel of supporting your club. I have no doubt Clarkson will rebuild this team and I expect to celebrate another premiership before my time expires. I am planning to make regular trips to BoxHill this year to look at Cousins, Nash, Glass and Hanrahan. It is a long drive from the Mornington Peninsula but I am looking forward to seeing our future up close.
Awesome post. Almost describes my explanation to my son yesterday about why I keep watching Hawthorn when they're no good. The joy is watching players develop. Hardwick having a couple of good moments pleased me greatly and enjoyed watching it

Yep more pumpings on field and then the opposition will come hard at our good kids during the trade period. If the more mature players on the list fail to turn up for the entire season (premiership players or not) trade back into the first round imo.

i can take us not playing finals this year, no problems there, but what I cannot take is the Rubbish delivered by a previously skilled, confident team of Premiership players since round 1!!! we did well at the clearences particularly at the centre bounces but we cannot for the life of me, hit a target coming out of defence or going into F50!
I still think that we are one of the best tackling teams in the comp, that was again evident at the game yesterday but opposition teams are just letting the ball drop knowing its going to be called play on, so until we adjust this part of the game, we are really going to struggle to get full momentum in games.

It is not "too many people comfortable with and living in the past"

What happened in the past has a cost and the Hawks are paying it now.

The Hawks could have kept all the picks that netted Burgoyne, Gibson, Hale, Lake, Gunston and McEvoy and drafted and then developed kids instead.

Then we would not be in this position. But the Hawks would not have won a three peat either.

Choose your poison

Spot on. I honestly think some see footy as "winning the future" with draft picks etc not winning flags..

However it is obvious that we don't have the personal skill to deliver the ball with the same accuracy now. In the first half this destroyed us, but Geelong's poor goal kicking kept us in the game.

This. So many kicks went high (Frawley about three times) or fell short (Gunston a couple) and they are momentum killers. At the game it had a serious lack of intensity in the first half, from both teams, but Hawthorn (where I was concentrating) were running around like it was a scratch match in training. Except for Mitchell - that guy plays with a ferocity that is fearful and admirable. When he ran off the ground to the bench he had an air of danger about him - he was tight and ready to go. You watch the others run back and they take those heavy last few steps to the line. Their arms swinging loosely. It seems that many players are coming from the ground relieved to be taking a spot on the bench rather than pissed to be missing on some playing time.

I don't know if we lack the kicking skills or have just forgotten how to kick. Players are stabbing at the ball when they pass. Or when not stabbing, making poor choices and trying to kick the ball through a gap the size of a tyre swinging on a rope.

Perhaps there are some game plan problems, but the players have to pick themselves up off the mat and starting fighting again. That's the first step. And I wouldn't be surprised to see that Mitchell is the guy to do it. Someone will eventually grab the rest of the team by the scruff of the neck and shake some life into them. From his body language, in terms of effort and commitment, I think he's earning the right and respect.

The thing I noticed yesterday was they would kick it inside to, if not necessarily a contest, an area that was full of players (both teams) when they had a player free out wide. The wide option would have almost certainly seen us retain possession but they opted for the much riskier inside option which almost never came off.

Noticed that too. So often to the left side of goal inside 50 too. Just keep plonking it in the same place

Obviously we wouldn't have taken the same players but would the likes of Moore, Black, Schade, Hrovat and Harper really be helping matters right now ?

There's every chance had we kept those picks we wouldn't have won the 3peat and we'd still be up shit creek right now.

The draft just isn't the magic bullet people make it out to be.

As Dermi said, our premiership players are mentally and emotionally exhausted. They have had to perform at their best for upto eight years while every other team has lifted against them. So we are in transition and have to accept the pain of losing but continue to support our players and give the younger ones time to develope.
