Roast How diabolical is our midfield?

Spoke to an assistant today. The data indicates the effort was there. When the method is all wrong, you get caught out of position, with no hope of influencing the play. It is at that point when the team looks like they aren’t working hard. Also, once the oppo gets a run on like that, it’s very hard to rectify it. Confidence drops, players lose their ability to stick to a plan and so on and so on. Footy is played in the head. And we have many inexperienced heads. Patience is key.

That assistent fed you a load of BS. We had 15 players with over 50 games of experience, including 4 players with over 200 games and another 2 with over 100 games, only 3 of our list had under 30 games. The lack of experience is a rubbish excuse. I get the out of position etc but again, how much are the players paying attention to Nicks. Maybe some players have lost confidence in Nicks and they simply dont have the buy in to stick to Nicks plan.

I was more of the opinion that there's no point sprinting after someone 15m ahead of you because you were shockingly out of position from horrendous turnovers or uncontested clearances.

Tripping over at the right time used to work for me.

Phil Walsh used to say your ground ball gets were a reflection of effort and we got absolutely smashed in that regard against the Bombers. Only Laird, Hinge and Dawson ranked in the top 15 on field.

If effort was there why did Essendon ALWAYS have more numbers at the contest

The assistant didn’t say anything about the lack of experience. I did. And he was a bloody good bloke giving me the time of day like he did.

Ps we are very inexperienced compared the rest of the comp. And it has a lot to do with our inconsistency.

The point is that everyone is at fault. The players for not executing the plan. The coaches for not getting them in a position to execute the plan. We are the second youngest team in the comp. We have to accept games like this.
We do not have to accept games like that

As soon as they started that run on, there should have been a set up at the next centre bounce to nullify their run..man on man and go defensive. Defenders play in front not 5m behind. Get your best nullifiers in there to stop merrett, parish etc and slow the game down to a grind

Effort doesn't need talent or experience.

I agree with a lot of that. But I also strongly believe that we have to accept inconsistent performances. Did you not see this squad over the last 5 years? We learn, we move on and we get better for it…until we are mature enough as a collective. It takes time. The good news is we’ve accelerated it beyond expectations this year. Good things are brewing.

But again this is the problem. We can accept inconsistent performances but how many chances do players who consistently play inconsistently get?

This is the complaint. How many more games for these players.
59 games McHenry played some good games as Sub but for 2 seasons he has been traditionally poor and we aren't seeing any improvement.
51 games Schoenberg is another who consistently underperforms at AFL level as a midfielder.
53 games Sholl has been closer to being a genuine contributor to the side but hasn't shown anything that should keep him best 22.
91 games Murphy has been ok but does he do enough to keep others out of the team.

Sloane has been on his way out and is struggling to even impact games anymore

These players need more games
39 games Berry shown a lot of promise at AFL level but was simply off pace at beginning of year. His pressure midfield pressure is worth exploring and he has some good forward craft.
11 games Cook showed he has some promise had AFL level
0 games Nankervis needs games.
15 games Parnell shown some promise
0 games Taylor

Bottom line we should never have just blindly picked the same players every week.

Can you elaborate on how we have accelerated beyond expectations?

We haven't accelerated anything other than false expectations.

Players have natural development and experience to stand on their own two feet, but some have reached their ceiling and we will never see anything better than what they currently dish out. Schoenberg, Sholl, Murphy, McHenry and Sloane will play the same way each and every week and we wont see anything better than what they already have dished up. The fact we are 8/8 and choosing to select the same players who offer us nothing more than advanced mediocrity suggests Nicks has lost his way in regards to development and is now searching for cheap wins and honourable losses to hide behind.
