His new technique is, well. Different.

He is a lot steadier at the crease and he looks a lot more poised. This is just what I saw from the sa v wa game.

The local broadcasters here were very impressed with his new look technique. Could be a new man on his return

How is this about Quiney?
The selectors had to protect Hughes from the South Africans. Inverarity all but admitted it yesterday.

So someone had to face the music in his place. And that someone was Quiney.

Well said. I agree that the selectors wrapped Hughes in cotton wool. No way he could have scored anything >20 against the best bowling attack.

So he would have performed as well as Quiney did then???

Didn't say that. Sure he would have done better than Quiney, but he would have struggled against the bowling attack.

I find it hilarious that people are up in arms about a bloke who averages 36 in first class cricket not getting picked. Mediocre record generally equals mediocre player.

Who might this player be?

Omg haterz!......

The buzzword of the last couple of years - applied to mostly successful teenage boy singers. BUt now applied to sportspeople.

On topic, Hughes will get 20ish imo before getting out -- and we won't bat twice

I find it funny how people have a cry at other people not liking Hughes yet constantly bag Quiney.....

Also pretty soft of the selectors to not pick Hughes against SA just to protect him.

I'm astounded at the level of hate for Quiney to be honest. I don't hate any australian player - but I have been critical of Hughes technque from day one and I have followed him closely because cricket coaching and technique are a passions of mine and I have yet to see anyone (bar Sehwag) defy the technical basics of batting and succeed on a long term basis.

Hughes has made adjustments so let's see where this heads. I'm also a fan of Invers, but his comments have let himself down here and ask more questions than it provides answers.

It's up to Phil Hughes now.

First Innings: 47 c Sangakkara b Kulasekara

Second Innings: 123 not out

We win after batting second and chasing 300 to win Hughes scores a century.

I had my doubts about him overcoming his "nick to slip" flaws, but he has continued to put on runs. Yes, its against Shield attacks and not Test ones, but all any player can do is score. I'm fairly sure that Shield captains aren't stupid, and at Shiled level bowlers can put the ball into the Chris Martin spot often enough - and better judges than most of us say he has improved in that area.
At the start of the summer, I was unconvinced. He's scoring runs as much as anyone, good judges say he has improved the brutally exposed weakness, he has scored runs at Test level before, he now seems as good a choice as anyone to fill the vacant position.

I don't think he was shielded from South Africa, that claim is bizarre in the extreme. Hughes' technique was still in question, Quiney was coming off a great season and was preferred. Quiney failed (admittedly from few opportunities, and he may get another chance at some stage), Hughes has notched up the runs and seems to have worked on his weakness, now Hughes is preferred.
Its not about protecting anyone, its about who is scoring runs and who looks most likely at the time. Right now Hughes looks most likely, that wasn't the case a month ago because of the doubts over that weakness. If Hughes fails, he'll probably go out in favour of somebody scoring runs for the tour of India.

he'll smash it up against the minnows.
Had to be hidden from RSA though lol
when he starts chain failing they'll refer to his blistering score against SL, bangladesh and probably someone like kenya on why we should persist with him.

You mean the South African line up he has already scored a ton against?

I don't hate Quiney in any way, I don't think anyone does. But the fact Quiney made 9, 0, 0 and people where still defending him is what I didn't like.

Hughes should of been in the team. But it's well known that the tour game against the South Africans decided who was going to play and Quiney made runs so was given his chance.

But people seem to hate Hughes for no reason, just like they hate Clarke. Hopefully Hughes goes and makes a decent score. I think he'll make 78 and 26*.

I'm not defending his performance, clearly he didn't cut it, but IMO his selection was warranted.

Cheers
