In terms of quarters won, Carlton is well ahead of last year. They've won as many as West Coast - 15. In total quarters won Carlton ranks 13th (North is bottom). That tends to support the idea there's a core group of youngsters who can make the club competitive.

I don't know what it says about Bolton, especially as it only gets them back to where they were in 2017. But in terms on-field performance Carlton not quite as bad as they look.

How many of those 11 debutants are still at Richmond?

Debuting the likes of Dea, Nason, Roberts, Griffiths, Gourdis and Webberly was beneficial to Richmond how?

When Bolton took over Carlton they were bereft of young talent I don't see how playing blokes who aren't capable of playing AFL is helpful to a rebuild.

I've been critical of them picking up too many no hoper mature age types but I don't see what that has to do with Bolton.
The simple fact of the matter is that not all draft picks work out.

Unless of course they're SOS's draft picks for Carlton, in which case they are all going to be 250 game stars of the competition.

They do have a lot of talent but the repeated selection of players like lochie o'brien, paddy dow and gibbons has had me baffled. Sends a bad message to the blokes pushing for a senior spot when guys are gifted games week after week.
I'm still not sure if bolton is a terrible game day coach but the match committee has lost at least 2 games at the selection table this year imo and that's an indictment on bolton as much as anyone

If they had a lot of talent, they wouldn't have 4 wins from their past 41 matches.

They have a lot of highly rated juniors who are finding their way at AFL level.

History dictates that some will make it, but more won't make it than do.

Carlton cleared out all the dead wood to bring in dead wood from GWS to fill space. Then complain that they have no one in the 23-27 range?

Honestly I feel sorry for bolton. Fair enough they needed young talent but replacing the middle rungs with GWS rejects most who are delisted now was a huge mistake.
Kinda sounds like when Richmond continued to bring in guys like Troy Chaplin, Luke McGuane, Robin Nahas, Matthew White, Shaun Hampson, Steve Morris, Ricky Petterd, Chris Knights and the rest over the years.

Or when Collingwood cleaned out the players Buckley didn't rate and got Quentin Lynch, Clinton Young, Ben Hudson, Jesse White, Tony Armstrong, Patrick Karnezis and the rest.

It's a lazy argument, you can't just fill a team with 18 year olds in hope they will all come on. Some of the players SOS bought in from GWS have contributed, some haven't. The reason we are bereft of anyone in their prime age bracket is because we traded anyone with currency and haven't been able to land anyone who could make a real difference (Shiel, Rockliff, Smith, Saad).

Correct.. which is basically your strategy.

Instead of a whole clean out making your side mostly completely uncompetitive maybe they should have held onto a few and built from there.

Way to flip your argument. One minute it's too many list cloggers, the next it's too many kids.

I'll agree we'eve gone too far with the latter. Gibbs would be handy right now but the trade was too good to refuse.

And what rubbish claiming we are completely noncompetitive, we have been in every game bar 2. Including your mob which was one of the better home and away games you'd watch as a mutual.

Marchbank - rabbit on headlights
Plowman - calamitous errors every week
Petrevski-Seton - soft, slow
Silvagni - slow and not skilful, but at least plays with some ticker
Casboult - limited
Fisher - doesn't work hard enough
Gibbons - limited
Kreuzer - most overrated ruck in the comp
Newman - limited
Dow - dreadful skills, doesn't get enough ball
Kennedy - dreadful skills, doesn't get enough ball
Weitering - soft, slow, out positioned too easily

All of the above are either not up to it, or just don't want it enough.

There's about 4 top 5 picks on that list.....isn't it the coaches responsibility (along with assistant coaches) to have the young players develop to reach their potential?

Now even The Age are trolling him. LOL!

Bolton's next assignment, against an injury-depleted Essendon at the MCG next Sunday, will pit him against one of only two teams against whom he enjoys a winning record (3-2). The other is Carlton (1-0) from his five-game stint as Hawthorn caretaker coach in 2014.

That actually does seem like a smart ass comment there, which is a bit shit considering the gigantic target on him at the moment.

They screwed up by not clearing out the assistant coaching cohort with the rebuild. Some real stale faces there.

Brad Scott will coach Carlton starting next year imo. I have a feeling Longmire will be moved on too and will coach North.
I don't think the Swans will actively move Longmire on, but if we chase him hard (and he's not my preference) then he may decide it's time for a change.
