Stoked that we get to play. We arent going to win the GF so we may as well get as many games into this team as possible so we can ramp up for 2021

I've no idea what Gil and the AFL will decide to do, but I do know whatever it is Eddie McGuire and Jeff Kennett will be consulted about it first and Dale Alcock will be told about it after.

I wish tipping was this easy all the time:

The AFL Commission meeting followed a gathering of the specially constructed crisis cabinet which includes Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, his Hawthorn counterpart Jeff Kennett, the former Victorian Premier, Sydney’s Andrew Pridham and Bulldog Peter Gordon, who joined McLachlan, Goyder and league commissioners Paul Bassat and Robin Bishop.

As Taylor has been saying on the MB, allows games to be played every 5 days etc. Shorter game time, shorter recovery time
Virus or no virus I reckon it's something that they would have thought about as a change to the game in recent times, making it shorter. Unpopular opinion but I'm not actually against a slight reduction.

I wonder if some not lazy smartie can develop an App connected to computer program that lets the crowd virtually cheer at the game? I think you would want maybe five option buttons on the app:

(1) Clapping
(2) "Come on <team> come on!" *clap clap
(3) "Yes/yeah!"
(4) "Oooooooo!" (Drone sound rather than booing for when someone is about to kick on goal)
(5) <Specialist club chant>

Five in our case would be Freo! Freo!

Each time a button is pressed it adds this sound to the overall sound with a volume level equivalent to average Db / average crowd numbers...or something? :p

Note I don't want to accomodate the negative neds! Or the umpire abusers..also fibe buttons leaves space for some sponsor's advertising.

I already suggested it the other day. Press [blue and yellow] to boo. West Coast fans are sorted.

I’m so happy that that round 1 is on.

As an oversea supporter looking in, it’s a gutsy move. In a way, I do admire the “show must go on” attitude afl is taking here. Yes, I understand that money is involved, but it takes a strong will to proceed on where everywhere else in the world everyone else are doing the opposite.

In the big picture, the health and well being of people will have to take precedence. But I do envision in the near future most people will be spending majority of their time at home (or some form of isolation). I hope I’m wrong, but i believe it’ll be a gloomy time ahead. Having sports and entertainment resumed will be important for keeping spirits and morale up.

Tbh, I’m still skeptical how afl intent to pull off an entire season. I hope the clubs will put in necessary precautions and not put the players in unnecessary risks.

Sidenote:
I noticed during last week’s women’s game, bulldog supporters gathered at a pub to cheer since spectators are not allowed on the grounds. That’s totally the wrong thing to do here and defeated the intention to play in an empty stadium.
I hope while the season is on everyone continue to support their team but do so safely.

I have no idea whether it is the right or wrong decision and not sure how anyone else here claims to know either. Your best chance of knowing would require advice I'd assume that nobody here is privy to and even if you were, it is not guaranteed to be correct.

I'll admit I was surprised just because of all the other sports canned but I don't know the deets. Play on.

If the move to shorten quarters is to enable teams to play games every five days that makes it highly likely more players per team overall will play. For us having plenty of talented youngsters we could have a significant advantage as the weeks roll on.
For us fans we get a good look at the young end of our list.
Developing players to play multiple positions would be a smart strategy right now.
The veterans at all clubs can be managed appropriately.
I reckon this is a glimpse of the future for AFL moving towards an increased number of weekday fixtures.

Watch now for other sports administrators to reconsider their recent decisions to abandon or suspend their competitions.

Yep, or the AFL to be shut down in a week.

I think it is the right call, it is just going to be a week by week thing that will be tough to manage remotely. Eventually I can see the tide turning very quickly and the vacuum of media to be filled with the doomsday preppers who think any risk is too much risk. Just look at the supermarkets, there is a lot of them out there.

There is no doubt that the AFL’s prime motivation for attempting to get this season done is the tv rights package. If they were to give up, those networks would be all over the AFL like a rash, looking for compensation.

That money is already spent & the AFL cannot afford to lose much of that annual income. I do not understand why the AFL did not commit to round 1 from the start of the week or at least after the players vote, particularly after stating they were fully committed to 17 rounds.

This weekend is the best it’s going to be for at least 2 months, in regards to those infected & the risks involved. If they didn’t play this week, how could they play in the coming weeks?

Anyway, didn’t make sense to me. Rant over.
