Looks like a Hail Mary for Nic. Either they’re really hopeful or there’s a chance he’s considering hanging them up after missing nearly 3 years on the trot. Don’t think you delay surgery and potentially interrupt preseason if it isn’t one of the two extremes. Ends up putting him behind for yet another year and isn’t really worth it if he’s a 1% chance of returning for a prelim/GF.
The surgery doesn't put him out for anywhere near as long as an ACL, not even close. If he goes into surgery it's ~3 months before he fully fit again, which means he'll be on light duties at training/preseason at the 6 week mark. It just means if he has surgery now he's cooked until late October and the rehab is a breeze by comparison.

If he bites the bullet and goes for surgery he'll only miss a few weeks of pre-season depending on how we go this year. They are just delaying to see if they can get him on the park in the next 3-4 weeks, they definitely wouldn't have given him the chance if medicos didn't think there was a reasonable likelihood that he could get up.

Surgery means next year we have the fittest NN we've had in 3 years by round 1, 2020. I'm all for whatever happens

Hmmm. Yeh i think unfortunately his body wont be able to hold up to the rigours of AFL anymore. At best string a handful of games before breaking down. An absolite shame as he gives us such a lift.

His latest injury is an ankle? That's not something like soft tissue or dodgy shoulders.

People need to relax about him.

One way or the other we will know in about a fortnight with Nic.

I don't think its even that mysterious, he's rested his ankle for a couple of weeks, if he's going to play this year his training will have to start to ramp up now, if it reacts badly to increased training load they'll give up and send him for surgery.

He's missed 2 and there's still 6 weeks to go till the first final, Duggan will miss about 4 or 5 in total with a similar injury, its by no means hopeless.

We saw the impact Nic had in the 3 games he played this year. He even had the better of Grundy with a crook ankle for most of the match.

If fit enough to get on the park, he’ll rip the finals apart.

And if the AFL actually enforce the starting positions rule 17, Nic will win us another premiership!

At least Collingwood and Sidebottom’s centre bounce antics won’t be finals relevant

Only happened a week after Duggans and I assume that’s the type of healing we’re hoping Nic has. So I think he’s either right to go in 3-4 weeks or not at all.

I'm worried that bringing in Nic Nat for a do or die final has the ability to derail us big time. I think the team has looked way more balanced with only one genuine ruck (Hickey) and an effective ruck/forward in Allen. The problem with Nic back in, is that they will drop a small to be able to keep Hickey and Allen in. Nic is huge when he's on the field, but it's what happens for the other 50% of game time that worries me.

Waterman, Cameron out
Nic, Cripps in

I actually agree with this. I don't think we can accommodate both Hickey and Nic in the lineup at this time of the year - someone like Oscar has to come out to do so, and he plays a more versatile role that Nic. Plus we run the risk of him breaking down again, but this time in a final. If Nic cant make it back before finals then he doesn't play IMHO. Love the guy, but its the wrong end of the season to be f*cking around with team balance and structure.

Nic Nat is a game changer and he plays if even 50% fit IMO.

OA won't be going anywhere but you fit in guys like NN.

Agree that Nic is a gamechanger, but disagree on the auto-include during finals.

He's played 3 games of footy in over a year. He doesn't have the tank to play extended minutes yet, and he will need a couple of games to find consistent touch. We'd essentially be playing games with half a player missing, and in finals that is just too, too risky against the top sides.

Back the system, back the boys who got us there. Nic can help us threepeat in 2020.

If NN can play 50% of game time, it's a no-brainer he plays.

A good quarter by him can tear a game apart.

I think we could make it work. From last weeks team he comes in for Waterman and on top of that we’d be getting more run from a Cripps —> Cameron/Pet swap as well. Half a game from Nic is 10 times better than whatever Waterman will dish up (Not really his fault in his current role). The stats spoke for themselves really and even on 1 leg was dominating Grundy for 3 quarters before th entire side ran out of gas. If he’s available he plays.

The huge rampaging Fijian playing 50% was among the BOGs in each of the games he played this year including against Collingwood when he played on one leg after quarter time. None of the opposing finalists have anyone who can match him imo. Plays.

You just beat me. What people dont appreciate is that the stoppages Nic dominates take a massive workload off our mids. If we are relying on winning footy off halfback sans Nic our mids are then forced to transition it the full length of the ground all the time. Most NN clearances mean a deep forward entry and so our mids are just having to set up a defensive zone behind the footy. Much less brutal.

Article on AFL.com a few hours ago.

A few positive exerts from this:

Young defender Liam Duggan will play 80 minutes in the WAFL coming back from a syndesmosis issue, while small forward Jamie Cripps is expected back against Adelaide in round 21.
The Eagles could be back to full-strength next round, except for Nic Naitanui.
The star ruckman is set to test his ankle injury by resuming running in the coming days as he attempts to keep his finals dream alive.
"We haven't had any backward steps at the moment, so that's positive," Simpson said.

Sounds like it's going as normal atm. No news is good news is the way I'm taking it.

He also has a great record of dominating against Richmond and Geelong in particular, two of the higher ranked teams that we will likely come up against in finals. I so wish he was playing in R22 for our final MCG game.
