Could not give a rat's arse about 2005 now. Sydney won one, we won one, given the rivalry that's a fair outcome.
While I would (reluctantly) concede that given the evenness of West Coast v Sydney clashes in that era, one premiership each is perhaps a fair outcome, that in no way alters the fact that Barry Hall should not have played in that GF nor that Sampi was held. (Not bitter 17 years later, though)

Oh yeah I get where you're coming from, but winning 2005 would have just brought the 2007 drugs-fuelled implosion forward a year.

Gov's a free agent after next season, could he go to Carlton to play with Mitch and boost the Eagles' rebuild in the process.

The West write their articles based of Schoeys podcast these days

Also they still love going to Suma for some content....

Suma is such a goose sometimes.

If you’re going to say the club should have ‘cut deeper’ explain who and how they should have done it.

Nudge Shannon Hurn into retirement? - you don’t do that to club legends who have never let the club down at any time. Come on now.

Force Luke Shuey into retirement? - look, maybe? but for better or worse, he’s the captain and no doubt conversations would have been had but to essentially sack the captain?….it’s been a pretty horrible year already.

Nic Naitanui? - the guy who has won 2 out of our last 3 B&F and is easily our best ruck option on the list (and potentially still a top ruckman in the league)

Andrew Gaff - tough year playing injured…under contract for 2 more years - stuck with the club when offered huge money elsewhere and missed the Top 10 in the B&F for the first time in a decade. Trade him? For what? Basically nothing like JOM at Hawthorn? Pay him to play for another team? That’s a shit way to treat a great clubman.

Think we should have done all of them? 3/4?

That’s fine - but if you’re going to imply it like Suma, why not just say it and explain how and why it’s a good idea.

If Sumich, or anyone else for that matter, wants to argue that we should have cut deeper, I’m fine with that - it’s a reasonable view based on our performance in recent years and current list structure/demographic

But if you’re making that argument then you should be capable of justifying your stance which includes which players you would have moved on and how. You should also be considering who comes into the squad to replace the outgoing player or who you may have retained

Hurn, Shuey and Gaff were the senior players out of contract that could have been delisted but were instead given new contracts (2 years for Naitanui and 1 for the other pair)

Given our ruck stocks, Naitanui had to be renewed. Maybe not for 2 years but I’ve pondered previously that the second year was a salary cap management trade off. There’s a risk he breaks down again but aside from Meek, there wasn’t really a ready made ruckman available to trade in and he’s relatively unproven still

Shuey and Hurn, I can see the rationale for both being re-signed but I think there’s a strong case than one of them should’ve been moved on, probably Hurn. But he’s just finished runner up in our B&F and would have been replaced by a rookie draft selection (Gilbey or Cleaver are two names that would have been available as an example)

The other experienced players starting 2023 over 30 - Gaff, McGovern, Darling and Cripps are all contracted and either unlikely to be willing to shift or receive much in draft capital. We also have relatively few players in the 26-30 range which also influences the decision to retain the older group

So aside from one of Shuey or Hurn, there’s not much of an argument we should’ve done differently but if you going to say so, then make the case better than “they know who they are”

Point out to Suma that you'd be replacing blokes like Shuey and Gov and Hurn with picks 60+ in a weak draft (when we already went as deep as anyone drafting Noah Long with the second last pick used) and it'll be like:

So just like the drafting and trading thread on this board I guess.

Where y'all reading quality footy articles where journo's are dedicating serious column inches for deep analysis, that isn't pushing their own barrow forward?

Maybe Suma has a bunch of well thought out reasons for why he would have cut deeper and who he would have cut. Given he was likely contacted for comment to fill in dead space at a low ebb of the year and the club had already made it's choices, perhaps he didn't see much reason in throwing individuals under the media bus.

When I made my post about Suma I thought of you - what's the connection? You seem to go into bat for him every time.

As for individuals, he didn't seem to have a problem throwing 17 year old Trew under the media bus well before he had even begun and AFL career.
