The media likely has no clue what he is getting paid. They make s**t up and run with it, it's what they do. The funny thing is that there are about 50 players moving clubs and all they do is focus on Rankine. If the crows are overpaying Rankine it's the club's perogative. Time will tell whether we are overpaying, nailed the offer or we are underpaying. The media pre empting how he will go in a different environment is rubbish. They can see the future apparently.

Similar things were said about Dawson - that he didn’t really want to go home but the offer was so over the top good that he had too

Didn’t effect Dawson too much based on his form this year

Dockers traded pick 6 for 11, 23, 30 in 2018.

Going to be fascinating, pick 5 true value is equivalent to GC pick 7 and one of their 2nds which is why clubs find it so hard to trade up.
GWS should have the most capital to trade for it as Richmond's picks should end up there which could force GC into a more favourable deal if they want pick 5.
If a 3 way trade can include Brisbane the trade should look way better for us.
Trade pick 5 to GC for 7, 43, 48, 61, 69.
Trade our pick 22 plus 43, 48, 61, 69 to Brisbane for their 1st.
Trade Brisbane 1st for Rankine and this is fair value.

GC in 5, 13
Out 7, Rankine, 43, 48, 61, 69

Brisbane in 22, 43, 48, 61. 69
Out 13

Adelaide in Rankine, 7
Out 5, 22
Chuck some steak knives in somewhere.

A mid should still be available at pick 7 but wouldn't be opposed to splitting it here if there was another player available we liked.

There's a level of insinuation that we're somehow misleading Rankine too, or are being irresponsible in offering him a big deal, not because he may not be capable of justifying it, but because we've gotten into his head with it and it's forcing him to make a decision he wouldn't otherwise.

The fact that any media person sits there and wants to proclaim what is best for a players personal life is ludicrous and to suggest a grown man can't decide for himself where he wants to play and make his living has a real condescending tone to it.
Imagine if the club responded along the lines of 'are you in the media saying a young indigenous player is not capable of making their own decisions...' and leave it at that..then lets see the media try and justify their position

GC wont do that trade but if they did forget phillipou. GC will take him out of spite

I'm wary about trading future 1st rounders. Fair chance it falls in the top 8 again next year. I would rather split 5 this year, which hopefully can get us two mid-late firsts. Use the other on a strong SA mid or fwd
Don't play NM and WCE twice and we probably end up with pick 3.

i dont quite understand the who fishbowl thing either. does it relate to radio? isnt most of the footy media we consume made from interstate? and the insinuation that rankine doesnt understand the state he was born and grew up in is bizarre. played league footy at 16, lots of expectation placed upon him from the start, went to henley which is a school with a lot of eyes on it when it comes to footy. i really dont get that whole line of thinking, like suddenly there are going to be expectations of a prodigious talent, when that pressure has been there for years
Unfortunately the Adelaide Media & 5AA in particular over the years .....has dissected all things Crows & it's players in particular

They need content, given most of listeners want Crows material / discussion ......this Tippett concussion media frenzy was an example of driving a player out of the state .....Tippett has admitted he didn't like the attention & it is very different to other States
That said, I suspect WA and the WCE are similar ....though it doesn't appear as big an issue

Re Rankine .....he knows exactly what he's in for ....he's accustomed to it as an Adelaidean ....interstate players not so much

Yes but there were other things hard about our draw this year
eg we played shit teams away and the good teams at home (except the double ups)
the key point is stop putting games into non best22 because regardless thats a strategy for failure

I think you're on your own there, our needs for a mid coinciding with what is the first draft for a couple of years with good mid prospects down to pick 10, suggests we take the best available.

It's not like we don't have heaps of late first round and second round mids, we have heaps of them.

In my view, there is a lot of internalised racism behind a lot of the media narrative. A young indigenous player with a reportedly “complicated” family dynamic - some media report it as “no Izak, we know what’s best for you, you won’t be able to handle the spotlight, stay at the GC where the footy club can be your family”.

I wonder if we’d be hearing the same narrative if this was a white kid. We certainly didn’t hear it about Dawson.

What if next years first ends up being something like 8-10?

Then we end up with no high end mid either year.

We need to keep pick 5.

I don't think we have enough seriously round mids. We need the big bodies. ;)

I'm not. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened... but this is nothing like the Pedlar call, for example.
If your Phillipou mail is correct (same source?), I wouldn't be surprised if the Hopper thing is connected to that - i.e. we're very willing to trade out of this draft

We might try to swing 5 and 23 for Rankine and Hopper, for instance

Why on earth would we devalue pick 5 when we don’t have to?

And who are we going to split pick 5 with as well?

Sydney have pick 16 and 17. Doubt Gold Coast accept pick 16

Richmond have pick 12 & 19. Would be very disappointing to go to the draft with pick 19.

I just don’t see any value in splitting pick 5 to walk away with a horrible pick and no guarantee pick the Gold Coast will accept anyway.
Potentially split it with GWS.

There certainly was some argy bargy about the Contract Value, prior to signing the Contract .....but he was a year in, b4 CARL came knocking

Definitely were rumours that he wanted out straight after the GF loss even though he signed 6 weeks before. I recall it as we refused to trade him but maybe we weren’t able to
