I feel like there would have to be some kind of AFL intervention next year if they get the feeling that Luko, Rankine and King were looking at leaving. I just can't see the AFL sitting back allowing that to happen as I think they will be getting desperate for GC to start making finals.

If King and Luko leave next year the whole priority pick and access to players will need to happen again and GC will be further away from making finals.

In that case, though, I suspect GC would go shopping for better players from other clubs to bring in on those deals rather than spending them on the likes of Luko and Rankine unless they have really huge seasons in 2022.

They're already doing that with King as an AFL ambassador.

They should give them an extra $1m for development coaches. Talent acquisition isn't the problem, it's talent development and retention. Look what they did with pick 19.

If Rankine doesnt improve, there is no way the Suns and AFL could justify paying him the big dollars in a new contract. Same could even be said with Luko.

Im not sure Port or the Crows could match lucrative combined offers from the Suns and AFL, given both players current output.

With King, one of the Vic Clubs will come hard for him and will land him IMO.

I don't think they have to - it would purely be for the name and the high draft picks the suns used on them that the AFL could use as a marker. After all these are the players that have been the most talked about up there since the draft in 2018

Hmm..do you think that the AFL would be as fussed if clubs went after sam day or sean lemmens? Me neither. The optics of GC losing one or more of the 'big name' players that they invested top end draft picks on may force the hand of the AFL to try and prevent it. Its their pet project

We judge players harshly. Luko is a very very good player. Is he a franchise player or a superstar - no. We all see green shoots with the likes of Jones, McHenry, Hamill etc. Luko is light years past those guys

Statistically not dissimilar to Dawson this year ,widely acknowledged as an elite kick as well
Certainly needs to impact games more but I put that on GC as much as him

Rankine very interrupted start to his career and clearly underachieving. However not far off Charlie statistically at the same stage of his career. Slightly more disposals, a few less goals, tackles the same

by what objective measure?

he’s a bruise free player who has never had even a single stand out game where he has truly impacted the outcome. Something that can’t be said for any of the top 7 or 8 players of that year.
