Toast Jack Lonie the resurrection

Had to become more accountable. Probs went too far?

I'd be happy to give him one year with the promise to extend it mid year if he performs.

We all got excited about Luke end of last year as well.

Would like to see Jack carry that form into 2019 before making along term commitment.
Fair enough, although as someone else said, Luke was going much better earlier in the year, but then seemed to cop another big knock on his shoulder and hasn't been the same since, so I think that comes into it a fair bit.

He's one of several who were going much better earlier in the year, but haven't been the same since getting injured: Webster, Carlisle, Acres, Long, Battle are others who have all been noticeably worse on return from injuries.

All we're seeing from Lonie now is what he was doing in the juniors and what he was doing in his first year in the AFL, so I think the couple of years in between are more likely to be the aberration, possibly due to poor coaching (trying to make him something he wasn't for instance), or whatever.

Time will tell tho.

His biggest issue seemed to be confidence in his conversion. Once they start going through it's amazing how mentally free they seem to become.

wants out according to Cockmouth... er Barrett

We have tried a few times to off load him and he's always first dropped. Hardly made him feel loved, I'd leave too. Acres as well wouldn't surprise me, both seem to be held to higher standards than others.

It's a disaster of list management. Bloke always had potential but we showed literally no faith in him. He has every right to walk and we have no one to blame but ourselves.

wrong.

He had to wait to get a contract whilst we were chasing Kelly.

He decided to look elsewhere and no one wanted him so he copped a one year deal.

Horses mouth.

Interesting then that he tweeted after last week’s game that he loves playing for the club and loves playing for the fans...

Hilarious.

Lonie was a bit of a whipping boy on here.

A few good games and a rumour he wants out & now it's a disaster?
People underrated him. The club underrated him.

We should be able to correctly rate our own players. It's all well and good for silly supporters to bag him, but the people in the club should have known that he was good enough. Now we have an awkward situation with a guy that is clearly good enough and only 22, but unsigned.

He'll be a big loss in my opinion. Just hoping we get him re-signed; I'm still confident.

The fact is the club has stunted his development as a small forward in the AFL. There's something going terribly wrong at our football club in terms of talent development.

If you want him to perform in the FP position, you can't be playing him almost full time midfield in the VFL, which he was.

He should have been trying to kick a bag a game in the 2s instead of trying to rack up 30-40 possies a game.

He's finally gotten a proper run as a forward again recently, and we've seen the improvement.

Got 20 possessions and kicked 2 goals in his 4th game. Its taken him 3 years and 40 games to better that output.

Small forward with less than 50 games who scores less than a goal a game but has kicked 10 in the last 4 = new 2 yr contract - performance based to trigger the second year.

At the moment Long is still behind Lonie and exactly one year younger. Not a huge difference. Long just looks cooler doing it.

Interesting. You are right, there is something about Long that just seems to standout even though they have a similar statistical impact.

One thing to consider is that while they are similar ages, Long has only played 13 games to Lonie's 49. It seems like Richo might stick around next year and from what we know Richo loves playing Long so he should get enough opportunities next season. I am really excited about what he could become if he gets a consistent run at it. The foot injury really derailed this year for him but if he can get another preseason in and become a bit more consistent during games then i can see him becoming a poor mans Cyril. He has a long way to go though:

I wouldn't be surprised if Lethlean does some shock trades. He's desperate to make himself look like a doer, I have a feeling this will go like our last few few messiahs where we all jump in behind him and then 5 years down the track we'll be hating all his stuff ups.
well, we have done that previously, why would this time be any different.

Have been really disappointed with Lonie’s last 2 years, mostly down to how much potential that I saw in him in his first year.

Gut feel was that he could contribute massively but I’ll be honest and say that I had given up on him earlier this year and was frustrated at his continual in and out of the team.

Really hope he can build from here. Love his attitude and how he gets under the opposition’s skin, don’t have enough of that kind of campaigner in this team.

Hope he signs off with 5 tomorrow and then walks into a 2-3 year contract extension.

Gringo your jumping at shadows get a grip, 1st thing Lethlean isn't our recruiting manager he would be 1 of maybe 4 people making decisions on players & on the Lethlean subject supporters whinge when we don't make any changes to the list & then when someone doe's we whinge again not sure what you or supporters want give us a list of your recruitment's and move the floor is yours Gringo.

he's making a lot of noise about what we are going to do for someone who's removed from it though. I want positive changes like getting guns but getting nothing is better than making moves to look busy. I think we will improve with natural momentum and the most important thing to do is lock away the good players and try to get high end players in. The top 5 of the draft is where the elite talent usually come from so we should lock that pick in and not touch it.

Being irresponsible makes for a bit of a show for the fans but long term improvement comes from doing the methodical sensible moves.

I don't remember anyone whinging too much except when we do dumb things or have a shit season.

If you can get Shiel, Gaff etc you get it done otherwise be responsible, no GOPs for the sake of it or old drug hack ex champions.

I feel like his manager is just trying to leverage Lonie to be longer/bigger contract than him not being offered one at all.

A few ex players have complained that the club was poor at communicating during this period. They are probably waiting to see what other options eventuate but not telling Lonie what's happening. We will probably sniff around potential trades then offer him a humble contract last minute.
